ReadIT: engaging teens with reading and writing by creating Book Trailers

Join Shirley Brice Heath as she talks from Harvard about young people’s reading habits, preferences and how they choose to interact with texts. Then hear from Graeme Lamb, Bell Baxter High School, and Louise Walker, Maxwelltown High School, as they discuss the uses of book trailers and share some of the skills and understanding they have developed from participating in the ReadIT course this year.  ReadIT is a European commission funded project which aims to develop a tested teaching methodology for book trailers.

Creativity Exchange Fife

Fife’s Creative Learning Network (FCLN) is delighted to announce their event ‘creativity exchange fife’ which will take place on Thursday 8 November 2012 from 3pm – 7pm at the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes.

This event is FREE for teachers and creative and cultural practitioners within Fife.

This event has been developed to:

  • showcase the impact creativity has on children and young people in their learning experiences and opportunities provided by educators and creative practitioners within Fife.
  • highlight the benefits of creative learning  
  • and to emphasise creativity as a cross-curricular theme within the context of Curriculum for Excellence.

The Programme is in development and will be published soon but advance bookings are now being taken by contacting cultural.partnerships@fife.gov.uk or phoning 01592 583255.  Please note places are limited.

Shakespeare in the Classroom with Globe Theatre – CPD

This one day professional development activity is aimed at secondary school teachers wishing to enhance their knowledge of using Shakespeare’s work in a classroom setting.
A specialist practitioner from Shakespeare’s Globe in London will lead the session where teachers will take part in active, practical techniques designed to assist their teaching practice in this specialist area.
Throughout the short course teachers will be supported by Shakespeare’s Globe’s educational specialist who has developed dynamic learning approaches to exploring Shakepeare’s plays with 11 to 17 year olds.
Their approach to supporting teachers will in turn aid secondary pupils to better understand characterization, themes and language.
Shakespeare’s Globe use a variety of techniques to explore and experiment with text; from the actor’s viewpoint and from the director’s, differing interpretations of the same play and interactive tasks to bring the text to life.
A short but specific focus of the day will be on Macbeth.

Holocaust education – teacher professional development

Holocaust education is a theme addressed every year by teachers in many Scottish schools, and commemorated each January around Holocaust Memorial Day. We know that teachers appreciate professional development  opportunities to increase their understanding of the subject and consider appropriate approaches to learning and teaching about genocide, prejudice and discrimination.

The Holocaust Education Trust will be running a free one-day Scottish Teachers’ Seminar in Glasgow on Saturday 10th November. Keynote speakers will include Ingrid and Henry Wuga, who came to the UK as part of the Kindertransport and settled in Scotland, as well as other presenters. To register an interest in participating in the seminar, contact Richard Hill at HET, richard.hill@het.org.uk

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is offering a workshop session for organisers of local events, including teachers. This half day afternoon event will be held in Edinburgh on Tuesday 16th October. HMDT staff will take participants through the campaign materials available to support activities around Holocaust Memorial Day in January 2013, which has the theme of ‘Communities together: Build a Bridge’. Scottish physics teachers wanted to work with CERN laboratory

Education Scotland is inviting applications from secondary physics teachers for a two-week placement at CERN in November 2012. The placement has been arranged in collaboration with education and scientific staff at CERN, and is funded by the Scottish Government. We are seeking two teachers who will work together to develop material and approaches to support the teaching of physics in the sciences curriculum area.

SALT Annual Conference: Excellence in Practice

With assistance from SCILT, Scotland’s National Centre for Modern Languages, the annual conference of the Scottish Association for Language Teaching (SALT) will take place on 3 November 2012 in the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

Moving on from last year’s theme of a “Conference for Excellence” we are billing this as “Excellence in Practice” and the 20 seminars on offer will reflect this, offering themes which will help practitioners.  Online booking will be available in September and the new SALT brochure will be available to download from the SCILT and SALT websites soon.
