European animal life – competition for primary schools

The new European Parliament office in Scotland competition for primary pupils asks them to create images to illustrate a 2013 Calendar on the theme of ‘Europe’s rich Animal Kingdom’. The competition is now open for entries to be submitted until the deadline of 9th October.

The organisers are especially keen to see artwork of some of the rarer European animals, birds and insects. The diversity of species which live in Europe provides plenty of scope for creative young people.

The artwork will be judged by a panel of MEPs and European Parliament officials, with prizes and a presentation to the winner. The winner of the competition will feature in a calendar made up of children’s drawings from all over Europe, and will also illustrate one month, along with eleven runners up, in the official EP Office in Scotland 2013 calendar. All schools entering the competition will receive a copy of the finished calendar, and a selection of the illustrations will also be exhibited at the EP Office in Edinburgh.

Good luck to all the Scottish children who take part.

Holiday Fun at the Library

Join in the Summer Reading Challenge 2012 and step into the Story Lab to celebrate the world of stories and imagination.  Story Lab is linked to the 2012 Olympics as the nations of the world gather for the Games.

Children aged 4 to 11 are invited to read six library books over the summer holidays. They join at their local library and a summer reading challenge pack gets them started. There are stickers and rewards to collect along the way and a gold medal is the ultimate achievement!  By linking to the Story Lab website, children can also read, collect, share, create, transmit and broadcast stories.

The Challenge runs from the 2nd July to the 2nd of September, and children can sign up at any Fife Library.

Look out too for the programme of summer events and activities in libraries over the holidays.  Details can be found on posters, at www.fifedirect.org.uk, or ask at any library.

Get the Picture! 2012

Following on from the success of last year’s Young People’s Day event, The Scottish Parliament is inviting young people from all across Scotland to this year’s ‘Get the Picture!’ event.  We are working in partnership with the Scottish Youth Parliament, YoungScot and Fife Youth Radio to create an event to remember.

We are looking for a wide range of groups of young people aged 16 to 25 years old from all over Scotland to come and make this event even bigger and better than ever before!  We would be very grateful therefore, if you would pass this e-mail on to any groups that you think would like to take part in this popular event.

One of the themes of this year’s Festival of Politics is ‘Positive Change’ and we have been working with a group of MSYPs to create a dynamic programme to reflect this.  Groups will have the opportunity to represent themselves at the Marketplace which will have a bustling festival feel and take part in 4 debates on topics that groups taking part will suggest.

Groups wishing to attend the Get the Picture event should complete the online Booking Form or email Frances Paulo at frances.paulo@scottish.parliament.uk
