Free Science resource for Primary Schools – TigTag

Education Scotland is delighted to announce that schools can now access Tigtag – an award-winning, online science resource for primary schools, free of charge through Glow.

They have agreed 12 month national education licence with Twig World which allows Scottish schools to have unlimited access to this great resource.

Schools across the country are currently using Twig on Glow to access almost 1500 top quality short films. Tigtag provides a superb addition to this resource, and provides valuable support to primary practitioners to assist in the effective teaching of the Sciences Experiences and Outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence.

It provides access to:

• background information, relating to the key concepts identified in the science organisers, and quality films to support and enhance teaching and learning in the sciences.

• planning resources, investigation sheets, practical challenges and succinct clear lesson plans, providing a range of contexts for learning which draw on important aspects of everyday life and work.

• interactive lesson packages to help stimulate the interest and motivation of all learners and support staff in planning challenging, engaging and enjoyable learning and teaching activities.

• a “What Happens Next?” and “Scientific Enquiry” section to encourage learners to engage in dialogue, developing their investigative and inquiry skills.

Log on via Glow (Glow password required) and explore the world of Tigtag on Glow with your learners.

Twig on Glow – volunteers needed for video editing pilot

Following the success of the Twig Summer Challenge, Twig On Glow are looking for classes who would like to try out our video editing tool. Twig Studio is a new online video editor that allows students to make films from scratch, using high quality clips as well as their own footage, voiceover and music.
A pilot of a new and improved version of the editing tool will start at the end of October and Twig are looking for Scottish schools to participate. The pilot will be suitable for students from P5 to S6.

Glow – the M-Factor

The M-Factor is an interdisciplinary project aimed at Midlothian pupils in the upper stages of primary school (P6 and P7).  This project uses the context of the pop music industry to combine a range of curricular areas that enable pupils to develop knowledge and skills.

The M-Factor challenges pupils to write and record a pop song and create an associated pop video.
Pupils, teachers and parents throughout Scotland can get involved by voting for their favourites and a daily top 10 chart will be produced.

Look, Capture, Create

Curious and creative learners from across Scotland have been exploring the importance and beauty of Scottish Biodiversity through Scottish designer/illustrator Johanna Basford’s exhibition ‘Wonderlands’ via Glow TV. This interdisciplinary learning experience has been developed in partnership with Dundee Contemporary Arts and is being supported by Sarah Derrick, Head of Education at DCA and Anna Rossvoll, Emerging Technologies Development Officer with Education Scotland.

Johanna Basford is an ink evangelist who creates beautifully intricate hand drawn designs using black ink. ‘Wonderlands’ is her first solo exhibition and it is proving to be a magical context for creative learning through expressive arts, science, mathematics and languages.

Before the project went live learners were invited to join the Look, Capture, Create Glow group by submitting an InkyME! The response was astounding. Currently there are  InkyMEs exhibiting from Burravoe, Carron, Clackmannan, Hythehill, Lochgelly West, Lincluden, St Andrews and St Patricks primary schools.  The InkyMEs have even travelled to Dundee to attend the first live Glow TV event ‘Wondertales’ at Dundee Contemporary Arts on 13th May.

‘Wondertales’ encouraged learners to look at the intricacy of Johanna’s designs and to capture the detail in words to create a Wondertale!  Wendy Woolfson, an incredibly talented storyteller led the event, creating breath taking stories based on three of Johanna’s wallpaper designs. She then went on to create a collaborative tale as learners submitted their ideas live during the event. You can watch Wendy in action here.

This use of an exhibition as a form of text truly captured the imagination of learners and they have submitted incredible  Wondertales to the Glow wiki.  Learners are taking the  time to read each other’s work and leave comments. Twig on Glow Summer Challenge

This summer term, Twig is offering Scottish students the chance to tackle some ‘Big Questions’ that even the best scientists struggle with today. Using Twig Studio, a brand new film editing resource, students can create their own films in these topics. Professor Robert Winston will be judging all entries and winners will receive personal commendations from the renowned scientist.

The challenge helps deliver levels 2, 3 and 4 experiences and outcomes from the broad general education including those from topical science. It is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate a secure knowledge and understanding of the big ideas and concepts of the sciences. Paper Creativity Challenge – Ernest, 15 January 2013, 11 am

Now it is your chance to Glow Meet with Catherine Rayner as she reads her book ‘Ernest’. During this session you will have the opportunity to read and explore the story of Ernest, a rather large moose, with early years pupils and then Catherine will work with older children and demonstrate to them how to illustrate texts. Ideally learners should have paper and paint so that they can also try the techniques.

What does remembrance mean? – Wounded

This year Poppyscotland have teamed up with Glow TV to bring you a series of events about remembrance. This is the final event in this series.

From 20th – 23rd November 2012, Surgeons’ Hall Museum at The Royal College of Surgeons will host a unique theatrical and educational event. ‘Wounded’ is a new play, which has been written by members of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre for students from S3 upwards.

Wounded is a free educational event which has two aims: to bring to life elements of the Curriculum for Excellence, particularly in History, English, Drama and Citizenship; and to support outreach initiatives for students, enabling interaction with museum collections.

This is your chance to watch ‘Wounded’ from the comfort of your own classroom.
