CPD Training – Commonwealth Games

Due to the success of our Commonwealth Games CPD in 2013 we have decided to add an extra date – Tuesday 29 April 2014.

This CPD Training Day is open to nursery, primary and secondary school teachers and is designed to provide you with a fun and creative session to adapt for your own classroom.

Explore three different aspects of the Commonwealth Games through dance:

– Cultures & Traditions
– Ready, Set, Go! (creative dance tasks)
– Learn the Motto, Get Inspired!

Bookbug Week, 19-25 May

Celebrate Bookbug Week between 19 and 25 May, with a whole week of free, special events taking place all over Scotland for families with babies and young children.

This year’s theme is Bookbug’s Big Sports Day, and there will be a whole host of fun story, song and rhyme activities taking place in local libraries and community venues.

Bookbug is Scottish Book Trust’s Early Years programme, which encourages and supports parents to share books, talk, sing and cuddle their children from birth, and helps every child in Scotland to develop a love of reading.

Creative Maths! with Rob Eastaway

For some of us maths is not our favourite subject, we don’t find Compare Bears and plastic sorting sets particularly motivational! In this workshop Rob, will look at innovative tools for making learning Maths stimulating and achievable for children and young people, improving numeracy in and outside of the classroom. With examples of games, puzzles, curiosities and mathematical “magic”, these workshops are about enriching teachers’ own view of maths, as well as offering numerous ideas that can be transferred straight to the classroom. Rob will also address some strategies for getting parents on board, including tips on maths activities that parents can incorporate into their busy lives.

About Rob Eastaway – Rob has written and co-authored 11 books, including the bestselling two part book collection Maths for Mums and Dads. He is the Director of Maths Inspiration, a national programme of theatre-based lecture shows for older teenagers. SEBN National Good Practice Conference 2014

Education Scotland is taking forward capacity building activities to promote support for children and young people with social, emotional and behavioural needs (SEBN). This conference offers the chance to draw upon good practice in schools and communities active in this field across Scotland.

The conference will include a keynote address by Alastair Delaney, Strategic Director for Families, Inclusion and Local Authorities and an update from the Inclusion Team in Education Scotland including HM Inspectors, Senior Education Officers and Development Officers within the team. Practitioner-led workshops will showcase a wide variety of best practice in helping children and young people with SEBN, from throughout Scotland and from a variety of sectors. A training session led by RSNO Violinist Lorna Rough giving practical ideas for music making activities with children working at the early level of curriculum for excellence (age 3 – 6yrs).

Space is limited as the training is tailored to suit the needs of the individual participants.

Suitable for all, whether you have some music experience or none.

Cost £20.

This includes an information pack with practical ideas for early years music activites and a ticket to the RSNO concert in Perth Concert Hall that evening (Music Director Peter Oundjian conducts Wagner’s Tannhauser, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17 and Walton’s Symphony No. 1).

The RHS and Growing Schools Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Courses for Spring 2014

Available to teachers, support staff, school governors and others who are involved in teaching and inspiring children about plants gardening and keeping animals in school. A wide range of topics is available, encompassing the use and development of school grounds, thus providing practical experience, activities and ideas for utilising horticulture in all areas of the curriculum.

The aims of this Programme are:

To enthuse and support adults in developing and using gardens in school.
To support progression through the RHS Campaign for School Gardening benchmarking scheme, levels 1 to 5.
To encourage and advise teaching of the curriculum both inside and outside the classroom using, plants, gardens, animals, school grounds and environmental areas.
To improve knowledge and understanding of plants, gardening and raising animals in school.

Join Santa’s annual appearance on Glow TV for Scottish schools
Be part of this very special edition of the Daily What Newsround from Stonehouse Primary School in South Lanarkshire.
Our special guest is Santa!!!!!
Children from Stonehouse Primary will be asking Santa a few questions about how to make sure they get on the nice list.
But you can ask questions too by joining in on the day.
Helping to look after Santa will be Stonehouse Primary School Captains Stuart Sharkey and Devon Murdoch.
And Mrs Scott and Mrs Cook will be leading the singing.

Creative Skills – Training for Early Years Practitioners

Starcatchers are delivering a free training programme in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Fife, South Lanarkshire and Inverclyde as part of a pilot project to develop creative skills for early years workers in Scotland which is being supported by the Scottish Government and Creative Scotland.

The programme will allow early years workers from a range of sectors to build their understanding of the importances of creativity in early years and through a series of artist-led practical sessions, will offer skills and techniques that practitioners can use when they are working with children and families directly.
