Shakespeare in the Classroom with Globe Theatre – CPD

This one day professional development activity is aimed at secondary school teachers wishing to enhance their knowledge of using Shakespeare’s work in a classroom setting.
A specialist practitioner from Shakespeare’s Globe in London will lead the session where teachers will take part in active, practical techniques designed to assist their teaching practice in this specialist area.
Throughout the short course teachers will be supported by Shakespeare’s Globe’s educational specialist who has developed dynamic learning approaches to exploring Shakepeare’s plays with 11 to 17 year olds.
Their approach to supporting teachers will in turn aid secondary pupils to better understand characterization, themes and language.
Shakespeare’s Globe use a variety of techniques to explore and experiment with text; from the actor’s viewpoint and from the director’s, differing interpretations of the same play and interactive tasks to bring the text to life.
A short but specific focus of the day will be on Macbeth.

Testimony is Education Scotland’s new high quality resource to support learning and teaching in religious and moral education. It has been designed for use by both staff and senior phase pupils. Testimony illustrates how faith, belief and values can influence how a person acts. It includes examples of religious and non-religious standpoints to show how people from around the world and in Scotland have been influenced by faith. The material includes the personal testimonies of some well-known individuals alongside the stories of ordinary members of faith communities. It can be used to support learning within the new SQA award in Religion, Belief and Values and also supports the development of skills for learning, life and work.

Modern Language Screenings

The experience of hearing another language in the cinema is an invaluable way to appreciate and enjoy another culture. From September – December 2012 Filmhouse offers primary and secondary schools a wealth of great films from France and Germany, including films from the 20th French Film Festival and Goethe Insitut. These films have all been very successful in their own countries and offer a range of funny, touching and educational stories.

Screenings are great value – either £2.60 or FREE – and many are supported by an additional teaching resource for use in the classroom.

The online resource provides suggestions for exploring the other curricular areas such as RME or maths and numeracy through the medium of French language and culture. Practitioners can use Passeport pour la Francophonie to enhance their professional learning both in terms of their own foreign language skills and developing innovative approaches to teaching a language. Learners will find that the activities bring languages to life by travelling through five different countries of the Francophonie.  They will discover other cultures, meet children from around the world and gain an understanding and appreciation of their native language and culture
