Youth 1st – Whats On July to October 2013

Listed below are details of events and training coming up over the next couple of months.

Young Leaders (for young people 10 to 14 years old) – limited places available

Cost:                      FREE for Youth 1st member groups.  £30 per person for all other groups.

Youth 1st are organising a number of Young Leaders courses during July.  The Young Leader Award is a programme of leadership training for young people between the ages of 10 and 14 that supports them working with younger children, teaching leadership skills through a whole range of games and activities.

The award responds to the individual needs of each organisation and its young leaders through a flexible, differentiated programme.  It focuses on specific skills such as instruction giving, organisation of people and equipment and the use of space.  Rather than breaking leadership down into its constituent parts, the Award teaches these topics through a practical, activity based, holistic approach.  In this way Young Leaders ‘learn by doing’ and by the end of the course will not only have the confidence and ability to lead others, but also have knowledge and experience of an extensive range of games and activities.

Driving4Success (for young people 15+) – limited places available

Cost:                      FREE for Youth 1st member groups.  £30 per person for all other groups.

Youth 1st are organising a Driving4Success course during August.  The course includes the following sessions:  First Steps, Road Safety, Emergency First Aid, Basic Maintenance and Driving Skills.  This is a pre-learner road safety programme for young people and is very popular.

Curriculum for Excellence Workshop (for youth workers and volunteers)

Date:                     10th September 2013

Time:                    6pm to 9pm

Venue:                 Youth 1st building, Glenrothes

Cost:                      FREE for Youth 1st member groups and voluntary youth organisations.  £15 per person for all others.

This training workshop introduces Curriculum for Excellence to learning providers, including youth workers, before having an in-depth look at the Experiences and Outcomes that all children and young people should achieve, regardless of the setting.  Participants will leave with a practical tool to support them to identify the Experiences and Outcomes most relevant to youth work.

Arts & Crafts Workshop (for youth workers and volunteers)

This an informal, practical workshop for Youth Workers and Volunteers who would like programming ideas and information about Arts and Crafts resources and how to be creative.

Conflict Resolutions (for youth workers and volunteers)

Date:                     7th October 2013

Time:                    6pm to 9pm

Venue:                 Youth 1st building, Glenrothes

Cost:                      FREE Youth 1st member groups and voluntary youth organisations.  £15 per person for all others.

This interactive session will introduce participants to a variety of skills that will assist them to deal with conflict situations in a way that avoids the use of aggression.

The workshop will use discussion and role play to assist in developing effective listening skills, effective negotiation skills and effective assertiveness skills.

Internet Safety (for youth workers and volunteers)

Date:                     23rd October 2013

Time:                    6pm to 9pm

Cost:                      FREE for Youth 1st member groups and voluntary youth organisations.  £30 per person for all others.

This informative workshop, delivered by trainers from Youth Scotland and hosted by Youth 1st, will explore how young people use the internet, social media and mobile technology  and what this means for you as a youth worker. It will take a practical look at the issues you need to be alert to as a youth worker and provide tips on how to keep yourself and young people safe.

Emergency First Aid (for youth workers and volunteers)

Date:                     28th October 2013

Time:                    5.30pm to 9.30pm

Venue:                 Youth 1st building, Glenrothes

Cost:                      £25 per person for Youth 1st member groups and voluntary youth organisations.  £45 per person for all others.

Youth 1st are organising an Emergency First Aid Course (4 hours) for Youth Workers, Volunteers and Young People (aged 15+).  Hosted by Youth 1st and delivered by qualified First Aid instructors from Thistle Medical, this session gives the first aider the confidence to deal with most emergency situations until the arrival of the emergency services.

YMFS: Monthly Live Broadcast Discussion – Hit The Road

Join us for the second in a series of monthly live streamed broadcasts, led by Youth Music Forum Scotland using Google+ and Livestream, exploring current topics in youth music from all across the country.

This episode will feature guest Jamie Gilmour of the Scottish Music Centre, joining us live to discuss the exciting youth music project Hit The Road and how young acts can gain experience in the modern music scene and find their footing in live performance in this country.

Take part in the conversation live online where you can ask Jamie your questions on Hit The Road and find out all about what’s happening in youth music in Scotland this month.

The live stream discussion will run from 6.00—7.30pm on Wednesday 26 June.

National Literacy Network Event – James Robertson Keynote, 12 June, 09.45

Join Scottish author James Roberson as he discusses The Testament of Gideon Mack, one of the Scottish texts at National 5 English.

During this keynote presentation James will give a brief autobiography, will explore significant elements within the text such as plot, setting, characterisation, structure, stylistic devices and theme.

He will also suggest learning and teaching ideas and resources.

Join the ‘Commonwealth Class’

The BBC, the British Council and the Commonwealth Secretariat have joined forces to bring you Commonwealth Class, an exciting new opportunity for schools.

Commonwealth Class is a special initiative that provides teaching resources, online debates and interactive activities for schools to mark the run-up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It celebrates the values of the Commonwealth and connects schools and young people as they learn about how to be active, responsible global citizens as part of the Commonwealth family.

The Commonwealth Class education pack is an exciting resource designed to teach young people about Commonwealth values such as rights and responsibilities, protection of the environment, respect for others and what people need to lead healthy lives free from poverty.
Produced by the British Council, the resource pack contains cross-curricular activities, short films and discussion guides with learning outcomes that link to key skills, curriculum subjects and Commonwealth values. Activities include what qualities you need to be a successful Commonwealth athlete, and an exploration of the route of the Queen’s Baton Relay which will visit all 71 countries and territories taking part in the 2014 games.

BBC online debates
Commonwealth Class partner, the BBC, is hosting a series of monthly online debates commencing this summer. The debates are intended to create a platform for schools in the UK and Commonwealth countries to teach and learn together.
The first debate in the series will take place on Thursday 13 June.

YMT’s course for writers and composers – submission deadline closing soon

Would you like to be the next Andrew Lloyd Webber or Stephen Sondheim?

YMT have an incredibly exciting opportunity for young people (aged 16-23) who are passionate about writing and/or composing.  Their week-long Young Writers and Composers Course is led by Olivier Award winning script-writer Stephen Clark (Martin Guerre, Zorro, Love Story and The Far Pavilions) and Arts Foundation award winning Conor Mitchell.

This course will take place at the start of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival at Fettes College, Edinburgh (pic above); thought to be the inspiration for J.K Rowlings’ Hogwarts.

Apply by completing the application form and submitting an example of your writing or music by 1 July 2013 –  course places are limited and a small group of writers and composers will be selected.

Design a book cover competition for schools

The Design a Book Cover Competition is an exciting opportunity to showcase your pupils’ creative skills whilst encouraging them to engage with books and reading.  It’s open to all primary schools and it’s easy to take part.  There are two entry categories: P1 – P3 and P4 – P7 and there are prizes to be won for your school and pupils.  The closing date is Monday 3 July 2013.
