New website on Glow to support the new National Qualifications
Education Scotland has launched a dedicated website which will provide quick, secure and easy access to the range of web-based course materials being published to support the new National Qualifications. In addition, the site will also provide access to the popular series of Professional Focus Papers.
The website is accessed via Glow (Glow log-in required), which is a recognised portal in Scottish Education for resources. Glow will, of course, also accommodate open and honest collaboration across the profession throughout Scotland, providing an ideal platform for practitioners to review and revise materials to suit their local requirements and share thoughts and ideas about materials.
SCILT, Scotland’s National Centre for Languages
Could your language project inspire others and win a top prize?
Applications are now open for the 2013 European Language Label, and schools from across the UK are invited to apply. This year’s theme is ‘Innovation in Language Teaching and Learning’, and the Label is open to schools in the Primary and Secondary sector, as well as FE and HE institutions. This award is a great opportunity for the innovative work being done in languages in Scotland to be recognised across the UK and Europe.
The European Language Label (ELL) is an award for innovative language-learning projects. It rewards creative ways to improve the quality of language teaching, motivate learners and make the best of available resources. Winning projects may use European Language Label on stationery and websites and, in addition, all winners receive prizes of books, vouchers or teaching materials from the Label sponsors. The awards are presented at a prize-giving ceremony on European Day of Languages, 26th September.
For more information, including the online application form, please visit the ELL website or contact idjouadj@cfbt.com.

Mugen Taiko
Taiko drumming is a thrilling folk-art, originally from Japan, now spreading throughout the world. Not only is taiko hugely popular with students, it is an effective means by which to engage students with another culture, to enable participation in music-making, and to encourage the development of teamwork.
Our educational concerts enthral & captivate the imagination, through an interactive and engaging performance, using humour and audience participation. Our hands-on workshops are successful at drawing out even the most the difficult & shy students, building confidence & self-esteem.
We are based at the UK’s only Centre for Taiko Drumming: the Mugen Taiko Dojo, with an extensive track record of delivering high-quality performances, workshops, as well as organising and delivering longer-term projects leading to student performances.
Our professional performing group, Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers since 1994 have popularised the art-form in the UK through extensive touring. Mugenkyo last year performed at high-profile festivals such as the London Jazz Festival and BBC Proms in Hyde Park, as well as full-length concerts at theatres across the UK including:
Edinburgh Usher Hall, Gateshead Sage, Birmingham Town Hall, Basingstoke Anvil, and performances as far afield as Europe, Asia & the Middle East.

For local authorities we offer a range of packages, such as week-long workshop residencies, or a tour of schools with our educational concert, or a project leading to a student performance. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with your specific requirements, and I will be happy to provide information on availability & costings.
