Say4Schools Internet Safety Competition (P6/7) – Now open!

Fife Council Education and Learning Directorate, Adam Smith College, Fife Constabulary and the seven Community Safety Panels in Fife have joined together to promote the Say4Schools Internet Safety competition 2013.

The competition is open to all primary 6 and 7 pupils in Fife and Community Safety Police Officers will be visiting schools to help promote the competition.  The theme of the competition is “Be Aware… Don’t Share” and highlights the dangers of sharing personal information online whether through social networking sites or online gaming.

Bryan Kirkaldy, Head of Education explains, “The digital age is upon us and our children are increasingly connected to the web whether it’s gaming online through their consoles or using social networking on their smart phones.  The aim of the competition is not only to make young people aware of the dangers of sharing personal information but as part of Curriculum for Excellence, to develop the skills they need for learning, life and work.”

Building on the success of last year’s competition, which attracted over 700 entries from primaries across Fife, this year’s competition is now open and will close on Friday 17 May 2013.

David Imrie,Curriculum Technology Adviser said, “To help pupils in this year’s competition, we will promote the use of Digital Techologies such as Digital Animation, Digital Comic Books and Digital Music to help them with their storyboards.  The website Say4Schools is a great resource and I would encourage parents to visit the site.”

Finalists will be selected from each of the seven community safety areas with an overall winner being announced at a dedicated prize giving ceremony in May.  Prizes include an iPad mini for the winning pupil and a Zulogic ZU3d animation kit for the finalists.

John Wood, Treasurer of the Glenrothes Community Safety Panel said, “The Community Safety Panels are constituted groups of volunteers, dedicated to promote crime prevention and community safety.  On behalf of all the panels we are delighted to sponsor and promote the Say4Schools competition.  Each year the competitions influence grows and this partnership is really showing its effectiveness in dealing with issues that effect us all.

On behalf of Say4Schools, I would like to wish all the pupils who enter the best of luck.  On the evidence of last year’s competition, there are a lot of creative minds out there and I cannot wait to see this year’s entries.”

Curriculum for Excellence challenges schools and communities to develop children and young people as responsible citizens who:

  • show respect for others
  • understand different beliefs and cultures
  • are developing informed, ethical views of complex issues.

All involved in successful learning need to understand themselves what it means to live in this diverse society, and to help children and young people understand what it means for them.

The Kist Scots Language Resource

This resource is a digital version of The Kist / A’Chiste anthology and contains prose, poetry and drama in various dialects of Scots, and in Gaelic. Texts in Gaelic have been translated. Those in Scots usually have a glossary. The anthology is primarily targeted at learners working at second and third levels.

Stand Up To Sectarianism

Youth Scotland, as part of a partnership of six national volunteer-led youth organisations, has recently been funded to support the Scottish Government to develop a community-based approach to tackling sectarianism. The Stand Up to Sectarianism project offers free resources, training and funding to support youth workers, volunteers and young people to introduce and develop anti-sectarian based work in their groups.

This national project offers free worker training and funding opportunities to youth groups across the country, alongside a new e-resource(www.youthworkessentials.org/stand-up-to-sectarianism.aspx). The e-resource provides accessible background information on sectarianism in Scotland, as well as practical ideas and downloadable session plans for use in youth work settings. Youth Scotland would welcome any feedback on the new e-resource.

Nature of Scotland Awards

RSPB Scotland is organising a new Youth and Education Award, as part of the Nature of Scotland Awards.  The Youth and Education Award is open to any school or youth group who can demonstrate that they have been involved in making a real difference to protecting and conserving Scotland’s habitats and wildlife.  This might involve fundraising for a conservation programme, working independently or in partnership to deliver practical conservation work, or helping to connect young people with the natural environment through outdoor learning or natural play.  The deadline is Friday 15 March, and all guidance and entry forms can be found on the Nature of Scotland website.

British Academy Schools Language Awards 2013

Win £4000 to get more of your students to aim higher!

As part of its programme to support and champion the learning of languages, the British Academy is again offering a series of Awards to schools and colleges throughout the UK for the encouragement of excellence in language learning.  This year the Awards focus on activity which encourages more students to take language learning to a higher level.

The Awards are intended to encourage schools to find imaginative and effective ways of improving take up and enthusiasm for language learning into S5, S6 and beyond, and of addressing the social imbalance in the profile of language learners at higher levels. Projects which involve collaboration between sectors (e.g. between schools/colleges/universities, with business or employers) are particularly welcomed.

The Awards are open to all secondary schools and colleges, and cover all languages other than English, including those learnt as community languages. A total of 15 Awards of £4000 each will be made to schools throughout the UK. At least one Award will go to a winning proposal from Scotland. Application is via a simple online form, with a closing date of 31 May 2013.

Travelling Gallery Exhibition Preview

City Art Centre, 2 Market Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1DE.

This curiously named Travelling Gallery exhibition is a busy group show of  established and emerging artists from both home and abroad. Working in a broad range of media including drawing, animation, film, sculpture, photography, performance, collage and painting, the exhibition will include artists who use a playful, childlike, feel good essence in their work, sometimes hiding darker depths but more often making us smile. The simplicity and low-tech nature of many of the artworks disguises sometimes complex processes and skills but also makes the exhibition instantly accessible to audiences of all ages.

Turquoise Heid includes artists Matthew Barnes, Olivia Bee, Yeodoo Jung, Peter McDonald, Alex Millar, Jock Mooney, Kim Rugg, Yukako Sakakura and David Shrigley.

The exhibition will tour in the Travelling Gallery until June 2013 starting off in Edinburgh.

It will then head off to schools and venues in Angus, South Ayrshire, West Lothian, Falkirk, Clackmannanshire, Stirling, Aberdeenshire, Highlands, Perth and Kinross.

Also, look out for artist Ellie Harrison’s Early Warning Sign which we are hosting in 2013 and which will sit outside the Travelling Gallery at every location we visit throughout Scotland. Utilising the brazen marketing techniques of capitalism, the sign attempts to grab the attention of passers-by: to remind them of the consequences of excessive consumption and to force climate change back on the agenda. The harder the wind blows, the faster they go!

Event: Raising the Bar in Physical Education – 2 March 2013 (Edinburgh)

Education Scotland, in partnership with sportscotland, is hosting this free event at Tynecastle High School in Edinburgh on Saturday 2 March to increase the knowledge and understanding of final year undergraduate primary teachers, postgraduate primary teachers and primary NQTs in physical education and to build their confidence and capacity to deliver quality lessons in this area.

The Scottish Government has provided an opportunity to raise the bar in physical education through a commitment to ensure schools provide at least two hours per week of high-quality physical education in primary schools and at least two periods per week for learners in S1-S4.  

This event will explore pedagogy that facilitates the significant aspects of learning and some of the perceived barriers to meeting the commitment. Practitioners will have the opportunity for professional dialogue and discussion as well as participating in practical workshops.

The Jolomo Schools Painting Award

**CLOSING DATE REMINDER** – 28 MARCH 2013

The Jolomo Schools Painting Award sponsored by Bank of Scotland will be run for the first time in school year 2012/13.  Students from the senior phase at all Scottish secondary schools are invited to take part in the inaugural schools painting award.  Students are asked to paint and submit their interpretation of the Scottish landscape.  The winner will receive £500, with an additional £500 going to the winning schools Art Department.  The winner will also have the opportunity to be mentored by the artist John Lowrie Morrison  (Jolomo).  More information can be found by clicking on ‘HOW TO ENTER’ on the home page of The Jolomo Foundation website.  www.jolomofoundation.org.
