The Visit From The Bookbinder!

bookbinder linkIt was well worth the wait!!

A couple of months ago, we wrote letters to a local Bookbinder. He replied and offered to come to visit our class to show us what sort of things Tom Valentine Bookbinders does. This prospect inspired us to write our own books and we linked to some of them in a blog post. You can read the post by clicking HERE

When Louis visited our class on Friday, we were all amazed and delighted that he’d read all our finished stories … and had made them into real books – we’re going to design our own illustrations for the front covers. We’ll post pictures of them on here soon.

Here’s what Kian and Andrew said about the visit:

“We had a very exciting day! Mr Valentine came in and gave a demonstration on how to bind books. He talked about how paper has developed through the years. At the start people scratched on rocks, then the Ancient Romans invented tablet things to write on. After that the Egyptions invented Papyrus made from reeds. Next people copied papyrus and made a scroll. Then the japanese invented paper made from grass. After that the Japanese invented the first notebook.

He then told us about what skills you need to be a Bookbinder. There was reading, listening, patience, spelling, imagination, maths, communication skills and you had to be good working with your hands. As you can see there are a lot of skills you need to become a Bookbinder.

Next Mr Valentine told us about the tools and leather you use. Did you know that the glue is melted animal fat!?”

We looked at the pictures we took and tried to remember some of the things we learned. Press play and have a listen.

Two Messages For Primary 6V

This is a very short post for Primary 6V at Carronshore. I have two messages for you.

sunday postThe first message is that I’ve just heard that we’ll have a mention in the newspaper this week about how we used our Glow Blogs to keep in touch during the recent bad weather – how exciting!

Jack, Kian, Jade and Alyson were interviewed by telephone. I don’t think all their ‘quotes’ will be there, but one of the photographs we took will be … and they’re all in those anyway 🙂

The second message is that I hope your Primary 1 buddies enjoy your Christmas cards you made for them today and that the Portable North Pole messages all got delivered safely to Mrs R’s email address. Your buddies will LOVE them!

I’ve also included a Christmas card for you in this post.  Click on the image below to view it (you’ll need to follow some instructions once you open it).

….. See you all on Monday 🙂

A Scary Moment At Carronshore!!

Good Grief!! What a fright Primary 6V  got this afternoon (Mrs V and Miss M were pretty taken aback as well!) when we decided to have some outdoor fun after being couped up for weeks with no playtimes because of the very cold weather.

swan 5We went outside to have a competition – we wanted to know how far we could throw some foam arrows.

We divided ourselves into teams and began our activities -and then The Scary Moment happened!!!

The picture here contains a clue as to what happened.

It was taken after the school bell rang for hometime. Mr Aitchison knew that the noisy playground would be upsetting for our unexpected visitors so he lured them down to the football pitch with some bread and water.

You can read more about our Scary Moment on our Glow Blogs’ descriptions. Just click on the ‘Header’ images below – it will be worth the read 🙂

Back At School Despite The Snow!

3rd blog post picOn Thursday we all came back to school after being snow bound for over one and a half weeks. The playground was still covered in snow, though, – as you can see from our picture!

Some of us noticed the blog post on here trying to reach Primary 6V during the Snow Days and the responses can be seen on our previous post.

Now that we’re back at school others have also been writing about how they spent their time off and have been busy updating their Glow Blogs.

Have a look at what they’ve written by clicking on the links via our Glow Blog header images.

andrew headerPoor Andrew’s family had arranged for windows in their house to be replaced … then along came all that snow! Luckily Andrew was able to spend some time with his Gran and Grandad while all the work was being done. He built a snowman as well – I have no idea how his snowman managed to survive – but he did 🙂

Andrew’s football had to be cancelled because of the snow, but he found lots more to occupy him instead. Read the rest of his post by clicking on his Glow Blog header image.

hayley headerHayley had a few attempts at building a snowman, too. She learned that it’s best not to rush it, though, because it could mean that all the work wasn’t worth it.

She had a lot of fun with her friends, but also found the time to help clear the path, put up the Christmas tree and tidy her room!

Click on her Glow Blog header and have a read … and leave a comment if you have the time 🙂

natasha headerNatasha’s Glow Blog post title is “Winter Wonderland” and she starts of by saying:

“I thought i could do my writing in white since its about my snow days but that wouldn’t work”

I’m so glad that she decided not to write in in white because we might have missed out on her entertaining – and informative! – post. There’s Christmas

  • ‘hints and tips’

  •  recipes

  • short stories

… and lots more. Don’t miss out by not having a read 🙂

kyle header

Kyle was ‘over the moon’ when he heard his mum saying that school was off because of the snow but he soon realised that going out to play in it was risky – on day one he fell and hurt himself!

Kyle’s dad learned just how dangerous the snow was as well when he got stuck in traffic coming back from Glasgow where he works, but he was luckier than one of his workmates who was stuck in his car for 21 hours … scary!!

lucy n header

Lucy learned that winter was here when her mum got a text from the school to say that it was having to close because of the weather. Her mum had been planning to go Christmas shopping, but she soon realised that it would be much safer if everyone stayed at home instead.

A week later, everyone thought that it would finally be safe to travel to school again … and then the text came. The weather was now worse than ever 🙂

robyn's header

Robyn was not impressed by her mum’s efforts to build a snowman and decided to lend a hand … and so did some of the neighbours. Robyn describes the events really well and in te end their snowman was superb – I would love to see some pictures!

Robyn’s description of her little brother Lucas crying at the ‘Lion King’ DVD makes me want to hug him, too! Have a read by clicking on her header link 🙂

Don’t forget to check back for more of our Snow Day reports and activities updates … apparently it’s to snow again at the end of this week!!!

8 School Days of Snow, Snow… and More Snow!

8 daysWell, we’ve finally returned to school after more than a week and a half of being snow bound!!

When I wrote the last blog post on here trying to reach Primary 6V, I had no idea if any of you were listening – but it turned out that you were!

Some of you wrote posts straight on to your Glow Blogs, and others decided to write in a Word Document first then copy this on to your blog. Thank you for taking time out from your fun Snow Day activities to write these reports and stories. We’ve already shared some in class, and we’ll be sure to read out the rest next week. Just in case any of you pay a visit to our class blog meanwhile, however, I’ve added a link to them here.

It was good fun having some time off, but it’s lovely to see you all back in class again for the Christmas Countdown 🙂

jade's headerThe first Snow Days activity report was from Jade. She wrote about an experiment that she carried out with the help of her dad. She made a great job of writing up a step by step account of what they did, and even included some super pictures to illustrate the results. There’s a link to her blog post via her great header picture.

alyson's headerAlyson was next to publish something during the Snow Days. She wrote a detailed report about how she spent her time. What a busy time she had – even managing a trip to Glasgow in that weather! There are great comments from her dad and grandad as well 🙂

jack's headerJack noticed the message on this blog and set about writing a wonderful story called. “A Snowy Adventure For Two Polar Bears”. He wrote it up on a Word Document first, then copied it on to his Glow Blog. Jack’s stories are always entertaining. I’m sure you all still remember the hilarious Rediculous Underpants Eating Toilet  he wrote for the Bookbinder 🙂 His Blog Header image will take you to his latest story.

kian's headerJack mentioned to Kian that there was a message for primary 6V and, as a result, Kian updated a Word Document daily before copying it on to his Glow Blog to share with the rest of us. He spent the first few Snow Days enjoying playing outside and entertaining his little sister on his Wii. Sometimes he had to go to his Mum’s shop, and reports on what happened when the Motorway to Glasgow had to close because of the weather.

Now that we’ve returned to school, others have been updating their Glow Blogs with their own reports of how they spent their time off school because of the snowy weather.

anna's headerAnna has taken the time to write this super description of how her Snow Days were spent. She even had the time to get her frogs in to the ‘Christmas Spirit’ .. we all know how much Anna loves her frogs!! Check out her report by clicking on her Froggy header 🙂

eilidh's headerFinally, here’s a link to Eilidh’s new blog post about her Snow Days. She managed to make an igloo (eventually), and even though she hates shopping, she managed to put up with it because she had £30 to spend on buying Christmas presents! I’m sure her family and friends will love them.

An Important Message For Primary 6V!!

snow viewToday is our third day of being snowed in! It must be very exciting for all of Primary 6V and I’m sure you’ve all found plenty to do outside in the ‘Winter Wonderland’ 🙂

As we are now off until Monday, I’d like you to find the time to either:

1. Write an account of how you’ve spent your three days off school

OR

2. Write an imaginary story about a Snowy Winter Wonderland Adventure

You can write on your Glow Blog, on a new page of your Wiki (this might be best if it’s a story you want to add to later), or you can write on paper if you prefer that or if you can’t get access to a computer.

We’ll read them all out in class  when we finally get back to school!

snow journal

Another great idea is to log in to Aberdeenshire’s super Snow Glow Group. There are lots of great ideas for things to do while you’re off school because of the bad weather. For example, there are links to help you create a Winter Comic Book, or advice as to how to become a Winter Nature Detective. Just click on the Snow Journal icon and log in with your Glow Blog username and password.

Leave a comment on here if you need any help, or if you manage to complete any of the activities 🙂

Meanwhile, though, Dylan has returned home from Lanzarote (he must have been surprised to see all the snow here!) and he’s begun to write about his holiday on his Glow Blog. I hope he adds more soon. Charlotte has also written about her trip to New York last week…. and Andrew has written a great post about his brother’s exciting football news!!

Click on their weemees to take you to their Glow Blogs. Please leave a comment for them 🙂

Our ePortfolio Experiment

Mrs Vass here! It’s been a long time since I’ve written on this blog – a big thank you to Mrs Williamson for letting me write this post 🙂

I wanted to tell everyone about an ePortfolio experiment we’ve set up with some of the Primary 6 children in Carronshore. Some of the ePortfolios can be accessed via a page on this blog and we’re hoping to add more soon.

If you play the voki below, you’ll be able to hear how Memoona is going to use her ePortfolio.

It’s only an experiment because I’m working somewhere else at the moment, and I haven’t had a lot of time to help the Primary 6’s build their ePortfolios ….. but I think you’ll agree that the children seem to be doing just fine on their own 🙂 They chose the pages that they wanted to have included and most were very keen to have a page about their artwork.

Memoona wrote about how she enjoys art:

“I really like art and it is one of my favourite subjects.”

my art work3

Iain likes art, “especially when we can draw anything we like“!

my artwork

And in her ‘All About Me’ page, Jaimey wrote:

I am also interested in art. I really enjoy art because you can kind of express yourself in a way.”

jaimey

Jaimey’s comment sounds really interesting. We’re hoping that the Art teachers in the local High School will visit the ePortfolios and join in the discussions on the Art pages. This would be great because it might help the Primary six children to learn more about what to expect in Art classes when they go to High School …. and the Art teachers will be able to learn how children in Primary School feel about the subject.

If Mrs Williamson doesn’t mind, I’ll pop back here now and again to write about how the experiment is going. Meanwhile I’m sure she’ll continue to post more of the beautiful Artwork that she helps the children with here in Carronshore 🙂

Welcome to Carronshore's New Art Blog!

100_8091

Above is a soft sculpture collage showing the children of Carronshore Primary School at play. It is on show in our front entrance for all visitors to enjoy.

I am going to use this  blog to display all the other great art work produced by the children of Carronshore Primary School. Most of the children’s artwork is displayed throughout the school. Their art work is regularly praised by visitors who come to our school. One of the aims of this blog is to give the children an even wider audience for their work. Eventually, I hope to give the children of the upper school their own online space to allow them to discuss their art work.

The two pictures below show the collage in closer detail. This piece was produced by P5 -7 pupils over a period of time, using recycled materials, including old tights for the children’s heads and plastic bags for trees.

Last Post Ever …. Again

Monica left a comment. She wondered why the music on the last post made us sound like we were all dead 🙂

The ‘music’ I chose was very sombre. I’ve re-done the music thanks to Ewan.

His delicious account led me to here.

All the music on this site is royalty free.

Monica also wrote:

Well right now i am in my room on my laptop and i am sore cos i burnt my self yesterday when i cycled half theway to glasgow with my dad and sis.i just thought i would say that cos not much people look at my blog so i basically write to myself but its fun lol.

Why not leave Monica a comment on her blog to encourage her to write more. You can visit her blog by clicking on her ‘weemee’ below.

…. And here’s the last ever post again with some ‘happier music’. Thanks Monica 🙂

A Fond Farewell :)

It’s been a great ‘blogging’ journey with two fantastic primary 7 classes.

There are so many memorable moments! Some of the primary 7’s who’ve just left Carronshore to go on to Larbert High School have been blogging about their thoughts about moving on. You can read them by clicking on their weemees below.

I really like the bit in Anna’s post when she wrote:

I would like to thank Mrs Vass for being such a great teacher and for being there all the time and to be honest she isn’t like a teacher at all. She’s just like a taller friend ;).

Wonderful … thank you Anna 🙂

It’s great that Miss Law has agreed to look after this blog with the help of primary 5 LW :). I’m sure they’ll do a fantastic job!

Meanwhile, here are some of the ‘best bits’ from last session 🙂

More On The Visit to Larbert High School

Maryam wrote a great post recently all about what we’ve been getting up to in P7V. She promised to write about her experience at Larbert High School during her 3 day visit. Recently she took some time to write a great account of the three days spent there. You can read a small section here:

“I told you I would write back and tell you all about the three day visit :).

10th June- Today was my birthday! I was really excited in the morning and woke up jumping up and down on my bed happily. I shoved on my school clothes. We had too wear our primary school uniform because the rector wanted too recognize all the schools. My sister had done my hair and make-up for me but she got really narked when I kept smuding my eyes. Then eventaully she got it right. My Mum came in and gave me a hug and said Happy Birthday. So did my little brothers, well my little brother Bilal’s birthday present was a punch but the bruise will bring back memories. Then about ten past my Mum took me and my sister too school. I was shaking in the back seat. My Mum gave me £2.50 for my dinner money. Then when we eventually got there I stepped out the car not knowing which way too go then I saw some other people walking by that were in my class so I just followed them. Then when everyone else came we all started chatting. Chloe and Jaydean had gotten me birthday presents which was really nice of them. Jaydean had gotten me make-up and a card and little teddybear. Chloe had gotten me these goggle thingies that make you go too sleep and a suga babes poset and a card. Thank you guys :). Then eventaully Miss Keane and Mrs Vass vame along with the white booklets and we got them and went inside the school. We had too go in the assembly hall where Mrs Buchan came in, (The head of Skye), and then she started talking about stuff and then the rector came in and we had too stand up ……… “

Click on her weemee below to take you to the rest of her wonderful account of her three day ‘adventure’ at Larbert High School …. I’m so glad that her sore tummy didn’t spoil too much of her time there 🙂

A Message For The New Primary One Pupils!

The Primary 7’s are returning tomorrow after their three day visit to Larbert High School.

Meanwhile the new Primary One pupils have been visiting Carronshore. They’ve all been assigned a buddy. Some of the buddies wanted to welcome them with a message. You can listen to their messages by clicking on the arrow below 🙂

More News From Larbert High!

Darcie has posted about her 3 day visit to Larbert High school. It seems like she’s enjoying it so far! Read her great report below …..

We are back from our trip to larbert high school.

It was………….(wait for it) ………GREAT!!!

I can’t wait till tomorrow. Today i had science and craft, design and technology. Craft ,design and technology is all one subject if you were wondering. We didn’t do any work but i was still a bit nervous when we entered the school. There is so many stairs and hallways but i am sure (fingers crosses)i won’t get lost.Tomorrow we were told that we would go to all subjects just like a normal day! Today we only had 2 subjects tomorrow we all have SIX! The food there is wonderful and the school is massive!

Do you remember when i was talking about the Hub, well i saw that today it’s really cool! I didn’t have anything from the Hub i brought my lunch.

I am sorry but i really need to mention this but i can’t believe how many exclamation marks i have put! It was just so exciting.

The only thing you need to remember when starting out is Bring A Big bag! Well a medium size, cause you can get a lot of books home and homework. Anyway over all i really enjoyed it!

Bye for now i will try my best and get on tomorrow and tell you about my second day at Larbert.

Meanwhile Jaydean and Chloe managed an interview with Mrs Duff and Mr Gibb. Have a listen below. I really think Carronshore P 7’s will all enjoy Larbert High … what do you think??

Primary 7's 3 Day Visit To High School!

Darcie  wrote:

This week we are going to high school for our induction days! We are going tomorrow , Wednesday and Thursday! I think it will be quite exciting and interesting. It’s going to be great fun as we are going to a very large new school. I am a tad nervous but not a lot.

I hope i get to know the school a little better, i also hope i don’t get lost. But i doubt that! The hub is a place where you can buy your lunch. If you don’t want to buy your food from the hub you can take a packed lunch! I am not to sure what i am going to do! It’s also going to be a longer day, but i don’t think i will even notice! Learning new things, seeing new places and making new friends is what i hope to do! I hope it goes well!

So far it seems to have gone really well …. and it’s only day one 🙂

Here are some pictures of the P7’s enjoying the food in their new school … followed by Mr McGowans expectations for their time in Larbert High School!!

Keith's Songs

keith sang 2 songs for Carronshore … we just loved them! The first song is the one from ‘Any Dream will Do’

The second video shows Keith singing ‘You Raise Me Up’ ….. absolutely superb! 🙂

The next post will show our live interview with him… 🙂
