Money, Money, Money!

This week we have been exploring money in class.

We are learning to identify, total and correctly make different amounts of money.

We are adding a shop into our home corner to further explore this learning.

Here are a few tips to try at home:

  • use a variety of coins and crayons to make coin rubbings – try and identify each coin from the rubbing
  • give your child their own purse with real coins in it and pretend play shops
  • use the food offers leaflets that come through the post to discuss amounts and values of money – scan for how many £ signs you can see

Counting in 5s

Today the squares and circles maths groups learned the mental maths skill of counting in 5s.

We counted fingers and counters in groups of 5 then discovered it would help us to total money when counting using 5p.

Here is a fun song to dance along to at home to support this skill….

….and a slightly funkier one!

Chanukah Show

Some of you may have noticed this week’s homework mentioning Chanukah.

We have been learning about the story of Chanukah in our Kodesh lessons and preparing for our Chanukah Show.

Take a look at the powerpoint below for the full story of Chanukah:

We have been learning two new songs for the Chanukah show. Please find the songs and lyrics below:

Ner li, ner li, ner li dakik,

BaChanukah shiri ashir.

Oh Chanukah, Oh Chanukah

Oh Chanukah, Oh Chanukah Come light the Menorah

Let’s have a party We’ll all dance the Horah

Gather around the table I’ll give you a treat

Sevivon to play with And latkes to eat

And while we are playing The candles are burning low

One for each night They shed a sweet light

To remind us of days long ago

Mitzvah Day 2016

Primary one had a great time making paper flower crafts to give to the residents at the care home for elderly people.

We thought that the bright and beautiful flowers would really cheer up the residents.

We used our developing scissor and cutting skills to cut the paper and used crayons to add bright and attractive details.

Miss Dunn will deliver the flowers to West Acres Care Home and explain it was our Mitzvah for Mitzvah Day.

In Kabbalat Shabbat on Friday we also heard a story all about one good deed. The story explained that even though we think an act of kindness can be small and insignificant, it can actually have massive impacts.

Happy St Andrew’s Day – 30th November 2016

Primary 1 have been investigating St Andrew’s day today through traditional Scots songs, language and stories.

We learned that Scots language is different from our language. Phoebe asked if it had different letters like Hebrew, Miss Dunn explained it was the same letters just in a different order to make different sounds.

We enjoyed hearing Whit the Clockleddy Heard and The Gruffalo’s Wean in Scots. Can you guess what familiar story we know them as?

We also learned some traditional Scottish children’s songs, such as Three Craws and Ally Bally. Our favourite song was Katie Bairdie.

Other learning activities included  collage thistles, Scottish culture Bingo and making a traditional Scottish dinner of Haggis , Neeps and Tatties in the home corner.

“St Andrew’s Day is when we celebrate Scotland” – Yisrael.

Mental Wellbeing – 29th November 2016

Today we had a mental wellbeing workshop called Moving to Calm with Dr Livingstone one of the school’s parents.

We used music and movement to explore our emotions and find strategies for calming and relaxing.

Joshua Sabba: “I liked using movments to be angry and cross, like big movmenets.”

Isaac Ram: “The claw hands were a way of being cross without hurting people.”

Phoebe Tomkins “We used smooth flowing movements with our arms”

Shabbat Shalom – 25th November 2016

We had a lovely Kabbalat Shabbat today in the infant department.

Listen to our views below:

“I love singing the songs where we think about what should be on the Shabbat Table” – Lori

“I like it that we all say the words to the bracha” – Toby

“When we hear what all the other boys and girls have been learning about like the Parsha it helps us too. My brother Harry told us the prayer he wrote today and I was proud.” – Lucy Vallance

Our Trip to the Library – November 24th 2016

We had such an exciting day today on our class trip to the library!

Katie and Freddie have given this summary of the trip:

“First we got on the bus but it was too small! We needed 29 seats and it only had 22.

After that we sang songs on the bus and really quickly we were in the library.

Gillian from the library showed us around then read us three books.

We are going to vite for our favourite book next week in class, we liked the shark one the best!

At home time we got to take our Book Bug bags home, it was such a good day”
