Scottish Maritime Museum Trip 22/11/17

Primary Two visited the Scottish Maritime Museum to learn more about Katie Morag.

We have been learning all about Island life through our Katie Morag topic. Kate Morag lives on the Isle of Struay and has a very different life to us.

During our trip we visited an old tenement house. At the house we learned what life was like in the 1920s. A mum, dad and 13 children all slept in the one room and shared a toilet with their neighbour! They would have a bath every Sunday but they all needed to share the same bath water! We smelled the horrible soap the mum would use to clean dirty clothes and saw an old iron and fire.

We then went on a bird watch but it was very cold and wet! We used binoculars to see into the distance. We saw a seal in the water, swans and some seagulls. We think a lot of birds were hiding because the weather was so horrible!

After the bird watch we went back to the museum where we looked at lots of different boats and ships and saw their engines and how they are made. We even got to sail a computer boat!

We had lunch in the cozy teaching room and then decorated our own paper seagulls to take home. Before we left, we got to visit the gift shop!

It was an amazing day and we all had so much fun!

The World of Work

dsc00786  dsc00788As part of our skills for learning life and work exploration we decided to look at job descriptions and interview for our classroom roles.

We discussed the skills and qualities needed for each job such as great communication and how to speak to others in a kind and respectful way.

We decided which classroom role we wanted to out ourselves forwards for and then we interviewed for it.

There are only 9 classroom role titles so we knew some of us would not be successful this week. We talked about this and agreed we did not have to get upset because it would be our turn another week.

Who would have thought we would be interviewing for jobs in Primary 1!

Burns Day 2017

Last week we celebrated the life and works of a very famous Scottish Poet: Robert Burns.

We watched the clip below to listen for information about Robert Burns and used our note taking skills to record what we learned in our jotters.

We were inspired by Robert Burns and had a go at writing and saying our own rhymes and songs. Mrs Waterson was very impressed at our ability to identify and generate our own rhyming families, we think we did Rabbie proud!

Weather Warnings!

Many of us have been hearing the words weather warnings on the news and weather reports. We decided to investigate this further on our Social Studies and Science time this afternoon.

Image result for extreme weather

We explored different types of extreme weather, from floods to tornadoes. Many of us knew lots of facts about different types of weather. Look at some of these below:

Katie: “I know that tornadoes happen in countries like America. They don’t really happen here in our country. They are like spinning wind that is very dangerous. ”

Ian: “A drought is when it is so so hot that you need your sunglasses and no rain comes. It can be over 34 degrees! Then all the plants and vegetables don’t grown because they need rainwater.”

We used clips from BBC Newsround to investigate the extreme weather happening across Europe just now. Many countries who are usually hot countries are experiencing heavy snowfall. We discussed how a country could be prepared or not prepared for such weather.

Following on from our discussion about snow Miss Dunn showed us magic snow we can use in the classroom. It was not cold and did not melt in your hand nut looked just like snow. We followed the instructions to make it and practised writing our names in it.

We even wrote our own weather forecasts with Miss Lindsay for the rest of the week. We predicted deep, deep snow!

Happy St Andrew’s Day – 30th November 2016

Primary 1 have been investigating St Andrew’s day today through traditional Scots songs, language and stories.

We learned that Scots language is different from our language. Phoebe asked if it had different letters like Hebrew, Miss Dunn explained it was the same letters just in a different order to make different sounds.

We enjoyed hearing Whit the Clockleddy Heard and The Gruffalo’s Wean in Scots. Can you guess what familiar story we know them as?

We also learned some traditional Scottish children’s songs, such as Three Craws and Ally Bally. Our favourite song was Katie Bairdie.

Click on the link below for the song and lyrics to try at home:

Other learning activities included  collage thistles, Scottish culture Bingo and making a traditional Scottish dinner of Haggis , Neeps and Tatties in the home corner.

Our Community

Social Studies

We have been exploring the Experience and Outcome:

Early

I am aware that different types of evidence can help me to find out about the world around me.

SOC 0-15a

By exploring my local community, I have discovered the different roles people play and how they can help.

SOC 0-16a

You will have seen an example of our learning in the Social Studies jotters that came home over the weekend.

As part of our learning we have explored maps and features of our local community. We made a map of the community surrounding the school in class and as a home link challenge made a representation of our own community around where we live.

Miss Dunn would like to say a huge thank you for all the hard work that everyone put  in if choosing to complete the task.  We used the class scanner and scanned in our projects. Please look below for some examples!

Social Studies: Our Community

Our Social Studies focus this term is:

By exploring my local community, I have discovered the

different roles people play and how they can help.

SOC 0-16a

We have decided to explore this learning through the context of Our Community.

We started our learning by investigating what the word community meant. Ian thought it meant home and Lori thought it meant the places you live in and around you. We came up with the definition “our community is the people and places around us that make a difference in our lives”.

To record our learning we wrote about our family in our jotters and made our house in a technology challenge.

Gruffalo

On Friday our nursery had a special visitor from RSPB Scotland. Our visitor had heard we have been exploring The Gruffalo in our establishment and helped us to further explore some of the animals featured in the book.

We learned all about how owls hunt, where mice live and even got to touch a fox’s tail.

We then moved outside to create our very own Gruffalo house.

We had lots of fun learning about the real lives of the animals in The Gruffalo. Our visitor was particularly impressed with our knowledge of animals from Forest School sessions, commenting that she had never been to a nursery where the children had so much experience in investigating nature.

Good Luck Major Tim

Lots of children came to nursery this morning very excited by the news of Tim Peake’s mission to the international space station. Many children had heard about the interesting event on the news with their parents and were eager to discuss this in nursery. What perfect timing for us as we are learning all about space in nursery this planning block.

DSCF1302[1]

Miss Dunn showed us news clips and footage of the launch on the interactive whiteboard with many of us counting down to lift off! The children asked for the small world rocket to come back out to explore life on a launch pad. Some children made space shuttles at the arts and craft table and others made rockets using the soft play material.

We wish Major Tim and his crew all the best on their mission to the space station. We are sure many of us will be waving up into the sky to say hello this evening!
