Chanukah Show

Some of you may have noticed this week’s homework mentioning Chanukah.

We have been learning about the story of Chanukah in our Kodesh lessons and preparing for our Chanukah Show.

Take a look at the powerpoint below for the full story of Chanukah:

We have been learning two new songs for the Chanukah show. Please find the songs and lyrics below:

Ner Li

Ner li, ner li, ner li dakik,

BaChanukah neri ‘adlik. BaChanukah neri ya’ir,

BaChanukah shiri ashir.

BaChanukah neri ‘adlik. BaChanukah neri ya’ir,

Oh Chanukah, Oh Chanukah

Oh Chanukah, Oh Chanukah Come light the Menorah

Let’s have a party We’ll all dance the Horah

Gather around the table I’ll give you a treat

Sevivon to play with And latkes to eat

And while we are playing The candles are burning low

One for each night They shed a sweet light

To remind us of days long ago

Mitzvah Day 2016

Primary one had a great time making paper flower crafts to give to the residents at the care home for elderly people.

We thought that the bright and beautiful flowers would really cheer up the residents.

We used our developing scissor and cutting skills to cut the paper and used crayons to add bright and attractive details.

Miss Dunn will deliver the flowers to West Acres Care Home and explain it was our Mitzvah for Mitzvah Day.

In Kabbalat Shabbat on Friday we also heard a story all about one good deed. The story explained that even though we think an act of kindness can be small and insignificant, it can actually have massive impacts.

Shabbat Shalom – 25th November 2016

We had a lovely Kabbalat Shabbat today in the infant department.

Listen to our views below:

“I love singing the songs where we think about what should be on the Shabbat Table” – Lori

“I like it that we all say the words to the bracha” – Toby

“When we hear what all the other boys and girls have been learning about like the Parsha it helps us too. My brother Harry told us the prayer he wrote today and I was proud.” – Lucy Vallance

Gingerbread Creations

The children in Calderwood Lodge Nursery class have noticed a lot of special food appearing in shops, houses and on TV at this time of year.

One of the most exciting items of food we have noticed and wanted to explore further was gingerbread.

Karen introduced us to the story The Gingerbread Man in the book corner and we used musical instruments to add sound effects to the story.

We looked at pictures of gingerbread houses online and the Blue group worked with Nicole to decorate a beautiful gingerbread house.

Miss Dunn also shared a gingerbread recipe and we all got our hands messy mixing the dough and rolling it before using fancy cutters to make our shape. We iced and decorated our gingerbread biscuits in nursery and took them home to eat. We bet the biscuits didn’t make it past the front door before there were only crumbs left to be seen!

The Sad Little Sevivon

The nursery class, primary one and primary two performed our fantastic Chanukah Show ‘The Sad Little Sevivon’. The nursery sang our favourite song Eight Little Candles and gave everyone a wave on their parade around the hall.

‘We were the candles, and we got on fire! But just pretend, that’s what you do in a show’ – Freddie

‘The singing was the most exciting part, lots of singing and the parents said well done’ – Becca

All the nursery staff were very proud of the excellent performances of all the children.

Eid ul Adha

Many of our families celebrated Eid ul Adha in September. Children who were celebrating Eid ul Adha shared experiences of buying new clothes and visiting relatives for the celebration. Miss Rasul, who teaches in the school, also celebrates Eid ul Adha and popped into nursery to help explore henna patterns and Eid celebration cards.

We wish all our families celebrating Eid Mubarak!

Calderwood Celebrates Rosh Hashanah

In early September many of our families were celebrating the Jewish festival of Rosh Hashanah, the celebration of New Year.  Jewish families celebrate Rosh Hashanah with sweet foods, like apples dipped in honey and honey cake, as a wish for a sweet year. Some families also celebrate with symbolic foods like the head of a fish, pomegranates, and carrots.

In nursery we used our creative skills to make lots of craft apples and bumblebees. We got noisy learning songs about Rosh Hashanah and accompanying them with percussion instruments. Some of us even dressed up as bumblebees and buzzed around the playroom floor!

We wish all our Jewish families Shanah Tovah.
