What a Challenge!

 

The green group were using their before reading strategies to discuss their new reading book: The Magic Trident.

We noticed a Killer Whale was a character in the storybook. Noah explained that a Killer Whale is also called an Orca Whale.

“I also know that Orca’s are 800cm long!” – Noah.

That got us thinking! It was such a large measurement we couldn’t really imagine it in our heads.

Miss Dunn suggested using a meter stick to help us out.

Miss Dunn: We have a meter stick! One meter is 100cm.

Lori: But the whale is 800cm, not just 100cm.

Toby: We can’t measure it with that stick.

Miss Dunn: I wonder what we could do then…?

Lucy: We will have to just use that one. Like over and over.

Noah: One stick is 100cm. There are 800cm. I think we could use the stick 8 times or something.

 

We trialled this theory out. It turns out 800cm was using the meter stick 8 times.

Noah also told us that a giant squid was 1800cm.

Miss Dunn: Another way of saying that number is eighteen hundred. Can anyone make a prediction about this measurement?

Alice: There will be 18 sticks! Not 18 sticks, we don’t have 18 sticks. We will like have to use it 18 times again and again and over.

It turns out Alice was correct….. and a giant squid is the length of the fire escape at our classroom to the girls toilets – 18 of the measure sticks in total.

Book Bug Week Fun

We have bene celebrating the joy of reading all week in P1 as part of Book Bug week 2017.

Today we took our reading for enjoyment outside into our sunny garden.

Teamwork!

Within our Forest School session on Friday Miss Dunn gave some groups a problem solving challenge! The groups had to make it from one side of the pitch (which we pretended was shark infested waters!) to the otjernusing only the stepping stones provided.

To start with we were all in a muddle but we soon got the hang of it by communicating our ideas with our classmates.

 

Miss Dunn then made it harder by taking away some of the stepping stones. That one required a bit more trial and error to complete!

Forest Schools 12 May 2017

Primary 1 were excited to hear that there are little robin chicks in the nursery garden. We tracked how quickly they have grown and Isaac was concerned there would not be enough room in the nest for all of them soon.

We decided to make our own larger nests for the robins using natural material from Forest Schools. We had some great justification for our answers.

Alice made hers using twigs as that would be familiar to the chicks because their current nest has twigs and sticks.Zac and Ian considered safety from predators by cameoflauging their nest with the surrounding environment.

We walked around everyone’s nests discussing the great qualities in them and practiced giving constructive feedback to our peers.

Forest Schools Term 3

Primary 1 will be continuing their Forest Schools sessions into Term 3.

Forest Schools Sessions will take place on the following dates:

We require one parent helper for the sessions to go ahead. Please indicate on the return slip in your child’s bag if you can support a session.

 

 

Celebrating Wider Achievements

We regularly celebrate the wider achievements of all members of our class in Primary 1 through our Achievement Wall and Proud Cloud.

 

On Friday you will have received an envelop home with a Wider Achievement record on the back. Please complete this and return to school on Tuesday 2nd May to share and celebrate the successes of our class.

Clink Novel Study

We have had an exciting week developing our Literacy skills through our class novel study of Clink.

The blue group developed their letter formation by practising handwriting on metal in their jotters.

“This is incredible, we are using our normal pencils but it is writing on the metal, amazing!” – Phoebe

The purple and green group have been exploring characterisation by mind mapping features of our favourite characters in the study. They then went on to create their own characters.

“Blaze and Zippy are my favourite characters, they are cool and brave and not rusty.” – Toby

The red group have been developing their sentence writing skills by writing an observation of Clink independently.

“Clink was so sad then he was happy. I like that he ended up happy” – Freddie
