New sound! Jolly Phonics – 14th September

We learned our first double sound today in Jolly Phonics!

A double sound has two letters that make one sound in a word.

We learned that when two vowels go walking together in a word the first one shouts its name. Listen to the song link below to find out more.

We then used our new sound ‘ai’ to blend some words.

Tips for phonics at Home:

Remember the difference between the sound a letter makes (e.g ssss) and the name e.g S (esss). Try to reinforce this at home in discussions.

Social Studies: Our Community

Our Social Studies focus this term is:

By exploring my local community, I have discovered the

different roles people play and how they can help.

We have decided to explore this learning through the context of Our Community.

We started our learning by investigating what the word community meant. Ian thought it meant home and Lori thought it meant the places you live in and around you. We came up with the definition “our community is the people and places around us that make a difference in our lives”.

To record our learning we wrote about our family in our jotters and made our house in a technology challenge.

We are active and healthy!

This week we all demonstrated our independence by getting ready for P.E all by ourselves. We know to carefully fold our school uniform into our PE bags and leave our school shoes at our chair.

We have been learning how to control our gross body movements and use the space in the gym hall safely through exploring a poem all about a little red plane.

I am learning to move my body well, exploring how

to manage and control it and finding out how to use it

and share space.HWB 0-21a

Korin: “It is so fun to move all parts of your body!”

Stella: “We used our arms like the plane and moved fast and slow.”

Jolly Phonics – 8th September 2016

Today we learned the sound ‘l’ in Jolly Phonics. It was very exciting because ‘l’ is the special sound of many of the children in our class. Lori, Lucy MacInnes, Lucy Vallance and Leo all stood up because their names start with L.

We worked with Miss Reid the P4 teacher to complete leaf rubbings today. It was good fun because leaf begins with ‘l’ and we got to practice our fine motor control rubbing the crayon over the leaf.

Tips for Phonics at home:

Try speaking in blends to your child e.g can you pass the m-i-l-k. This will encourage your child to listen for the word the sounds make as they blend together.

Autumn is Here!

Within our mathematics and numeracy we have been learning all about the seasons and features of these. Our focus this week was…

I am aware of how routines and events in my world link with times and seasons, and have explored ways to record and display these using clocks, calendars and other methods. MNU 0-10a

We have written lists of Autumn colours, gone on an Autumn hunt, taken Autumn leave rubbings and written our own story about kicking the leaves.

Joshua: “In Autumn the leaves fly off the trees.”

Jamin: “Autumn colours are red and orange. They are like sun fire colours but the weather is actually windy and cold in Autumn.”

Katie: “All the animals like hedgehogs get ready for winter. It’s too cold for them.”

Jolly Phonics – 5th September 2016

We had lots of fun reading the funny story for our new jolly phonics sound ‘g’ today.

The story in our Big Book was all about a blocked drain making a funny noise. Freddie noticed our sink in the classroom often makes that noise too so we listened for it today.

We have been working hard on our letter formation. Today we used the interactive whiteboard and Active Inspire to practice ‘g’. Take a look at our work below:
