Dexter, Alex, Zoe and I made our very own Bug Hotel in the playground. We used leaves, boxes, stones and twigs. We decided to make a hotel for all the bugs because winter is here and we didn’t want them to die from all the rain and snow. There are 5 bugs who are staying there at the moment, but we let all bugs come and go as they please.

Christmas Jumper Day!
Christmas Movie Afternoon
We are excited for tomorrow’s movie afternoon which will take place in the Mure Hall at 1.35pm. Entry is £1 which includes a snack and a drink. Snacks from home should not be brought to the movie afternoon.
To celebrate the Christmas Fayre on Saturday, we are getting into the Christmas spirit and inviting pupils and staff to wear a Christmas jumper to school! (Remember, we still expect to see school skirts and trousers!)
Reading Challenge Success for Abi Grierson
Well done to Abi Grierson (P6) who is storming her way through various books as part of our Reading Challenge.
“I have read 15 books since we started the challenge on the 31st of October. I struggle with reading and I feel this challenge has helped me improve my reading skills. I am enjoying reading now and I read in class and at night before I go to my bed. I just finished ‘Hop on Pop’ and most of the Dr Suess books are really good.”
Stars in Our School
Stars in Our Schools is a celebration of school support staff who work hard in schools to support staff and children. This year Stars in Our Schools day is today, Friday 25 November. We held an assembly to celebrate our wonderful support staff in school. Each class then completed some activities to highlight how much we appreciate all they do for Uplawmoor Primary.
UNISON promotes this day as an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful work they do every day and to make sure the world knows just how vital they are to children’s education.

Open Afternoon
The school had an open parents afternoon where parents and guardians could come and do some activities with their children. Primary 1 played math games with the adults, went to the sandpit, showed them around and went on the computer. Primary 2/3 did an activity based on the Rainforest. There was a filming group, sorting group, choosing group, painting group and sorting group it was very fun. It was nice to have the parents in to our school!

P6/7 swim at eastwood
Primary 6/7 have their final swimming lesson at Eastwood High School next week. They have been working hard on the front crawl, breast stroke and backstroke. The case of the mysterious missing swimming shorts continues though……
Primary 2/3 go to Edinburgh Zoo
Primary 2/3 went to Edinburgh zoo because we did the Rainforest in class.
Something funny happened to Jack, Alex, Ollie, Dexter and Mikey – a tiger jumped over their head! P2/3 also saw lots and lots of penguins. Some of us held cockroaches and a corn snake. We saw monkeys too who were very funny. We also saw some deer and lions too. We were going to see pandas but the pandas were too shy.

Smoking in Cars legislation
From 5th of December 2016, a person smoking in a car which is carrying passengers under 18 years of age will be breaking the law. Offenders could face a £100 fixed penalty fine.
The Smoking Prohibition (Children in Motor Vehicles) (Scotland) Act 2016, creates a new criminal offence, committed by any adult (aged 18 or over), where that adult smokes in a private motor vehicle in the presence of a child (under 18years of age), while that vehicle is in a public place. The aim of the legislation is to protect children and young people from the harmful effects of exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) in a confined space.
Exposure to second-hand smoke in cars involves higher concentrations of health-threatening chemicals than in larger, open areas. Even if the windows are opened or air conditioning is used, harmful particles can remain in the atmosphere long after the visible smoke has disappeared. The restriction of a vehicle also means individuals are unable to move away from the smoke.
We all have an obligation to protect children and young people from the risks to their life and health, caused by the exposure to second hand smoke and ensure that every child in Scotland has the best start in life. Growing up in a smoke-free environment is an important part of that.

P4/5 visit the Synagogue
Primary 4/5 visited Giffnock and Newlands Synagogue on Wednesday 2nd November, and had the opportunity to find out the answers to lots of questions we had been thinking about.
We had an excellent guide called Avril who explained all the different features and artefacts in the synagogue. Here she is showing us the ark, the most important part of the synagogue.
The Jewish holy book, the Torah Scrolls are kept inside the ark. They are ‘dressed’ in beautiful velvet and silver crowns and are treated like royalty. In the synagogue men and women sit separately and Avril took us upstairs to show us where the women sit.
