Asteroids’ trip to the Park

We had a great time this morning when we went a walk to the park. The sun was even shining for us!

We paid careful attention to the road and cars when crossing the main road and then we enjoyed a walk through the park, right up to the top then back down again, where we crossed the bridge over the pond and watched the swans and the ducks. It was a little windy so the fountain in the water sprayed us a little.

We all walked really well and enjoyed our wee trip out.

Well done everyone!

Careers Week – Asteroids

The Asteroids looked at different jobs this afternoon, specifically people who help us.
We paid attention and took part in chatting about where we can see/find people who do these jobs and how and when they might help us.
We had a great time dressing up! Our favourites were Police Officers and Firefighters!

World Book Day with the Asteroids.

We had a lovely day celebrating books and sharing stories!

We looked at our favourite books from home and made confident choices of books to read from the class library. While we read books we did a scavenger hunt of story book items and ticked them off our list.

Our theme of the day was ‘Pirates Love Underpants’ and so we listened to the story and made a bookmark and pirate hat. We then decorated our own WBD cupcakes choosing our own icing colour and finished them off with cake toppers.

Some of us dressed up and the ladies dressed as the Pirates from ‘Pirates love Underpants’!!

Fairtrade Fortnight.

We have really enjoyed learning about Fairtrade. We listened well to the powerpoint telling us about Fairtrade and why it is a good idea to buy food with the Fairtrade logo.
We familiarised ourselves with the logo and went on a logo hunt in our classroom and the corridor. We thought we had found them all but Mrs Smith found one the next day stuck to the window!

We looked at different kinds of food we can buy with the Fairtrade logo and were super logo spotters, finding the logo on the packaging.

We also made rice krispie cakes with some Fairtrade chocolate – yummy!

Another activity we took part in was painting using Fairtrade coffee! Most of us did not like the smell of the coffee but we enjoyed using it as paint on our super absorbent watercolour paper. Some of us thought it looked like parchment from the Ancient Egyptians!

Following instructions

The Asteroids made a jam sandwich yesterday using instructions to show them what ingredients they needed and what they had to do.

Once the jam sandwich was made, most of us enjoyed eating the jam sandwich for our snack.

We then showed off our recall and reading skills and completed a worksheet choosing the correct written or pictorial steps to making our sandwich.

We finished all off listening to the Jeely Piece song!

Great job, boys!

FAOL Science – Recycled Musical Instruments

The Asteroids explored percussion instruments on Monday. We were shaking and hitting our instruments and testing to see whether they had a hard or soft sound or a loud or quiet sound. We all chose an instrument to play along with music on the board.

After that, we each chose a recycled container to make our own percussion instruments. We experimented with the sounds the different ‘noise makers’ made (lentils, rice, popcorn, cheerios, etc) and whether they were soft, hard, loud or quiet, then we chose which ‘noise maker’ we wanted to fill our own containers.

We had a great time investigating and making lots of noise!

IDL evidence – film review

As part of our topic this term, we watched the film Brave and carried out our own film review of it.

We answered questions on which was our favourite character, scene and whether we enjoyed the film or not.

Chinese New Year with the Asteroids

What fun we have had today learning about Chinese New Year. We paid good attention to watching a family get ready for Chinese New Year on the board. We saw them decorate their houses and so we made paper lanterns too and decorated our classroom. We even made our lanterns light up as we enjoyed our snack.
After we made our dragon, we took them outside and used them as kites. What a great blowy day for kites!

Robert Burns Day with the Asteroids.

The boys had lots of fun celebrating Robert Burns Day. We discussed who he was and how and why we celebrate this poet every year.
We all enjoyed watching the Transition class’ Burns Supper and were amazed that Mr Nicoll could play the bagpipes!
We made our own haggis, neeps and tatties, made a kilt complete with a sporran and we even attempted to learn the Gay Gordons Scottish dance. We all enjoyed that! 🙂

Global Goals 2 – ‘Wonky’ Fruit Smoothie

The Asteroids were learning about ‘wonky’ fruit and the difference between ‘wonky’ fruit and the ‘perfect’ fruit you find in the supermarkets. We were learning that misshapen fruit tastes just the same as perfect looking fruit and so to help the farmers,  reduce waste and help the environment, we should try and use ‘wonky’ fruit when we can.

We looked at pictures of different fruit, identified them and sorted them into perfect fruit and wonky fruit groups.

We used ‘wonky’ blueberries, strawberries and over-ripe bananas in our smoothie. It tasted delicious!
