Homework club
A reminder that our homework club is open every day from 3pm to 4pm. Promoting parental partnership, this club is open to children and an adult. Computers, laptops and iPads are available. Mrs Lobhan is available to help with logging on to Bugclub and give support.
Rotary Quiz
Congratulations to our P7 quiz team representing Onthank in the New Laigh Church tonight. After 6 rounds of difficult questions they came joint second with Gargieston – just 1 point behind the eventual winners, Nether Robertland.
Well done Nether Roberland. All the children were superb getting more points than many of the adult spectators who were playing along. We look forward to welcoming the Rotarians who are in school tomorrow reading with our Primary 3 children.
World Book Day – Thursday 7 March 2019
This year we are celebrating 22 years of World Book Day. We are inviting people into some classes to read a story to the children.
We are asking staff and pupils to dress up as a “book character” and bring in the book to read/discuss. Pupils are asked to bring in a book which they would like to swap with someone else.

P6 Parental Engagement Numeracy Workshop

ONTHANK @ DANCE FEST 2019!
Onthank Primary are delighted to be invited back to East Ayrshire’s DANCE FEST 2019 event in March at The Palace Theatre, Kilmarnock.
We are calling on as many P6 & P7 pupils to join #teamonthank and perform alongside schools from across Ayrshire in a true celebration of dance.
Dance Fest rehearsals will take the form of an after-school club delivered by Steven Swan every Friday 3pm – 4.30pm in the main hall, commencing Friday 1st February.
P6 & P7 pupils wishing to participate should complete the permission form below with a parent/guardian by Friday 1st February.

Creative artistry using mindful techniques
Parents and children alike enjoyed another Mindfulness session this week. As well as participating in a shared yoga session, they created works of art using sand and paint.
Using sand as a medium to express their thoughts was not only different, but quite relaxing as everyone took their hands and fingers for a walk through the sand, feeling the texture and softness of the grain to create different patterns. Staff enjoyed it too!

Primary 6 and PACE Theatre
Our Primary 6 classes worked with PACE Theatre yesterday morning to produce a short anti bullying play which was performed to the P5 year group and our P6 parents.
The children worked extremely hard in the morning to learn actions, lines and stage directions. The show delivered a strong anti bullying message and encouraged to reach their full potential.
Thank you to all the adults who were able to join us for the performance. It was great to see so many people there. We’d love to hear your comments about the show below.

Can you help?
Mrs Easter was wondering if anyone in our Onthank family has and is able to donate plain cotton material? The P.4’s are studying the era of the 1970’s and would love to try designing and making some flares and other clothing. She is dusting off her sewing machine and reminding herself how to sew as we speak. If anyone can help that would be GROOVEY BABY!
P6 to Amazonia
P6 is visiting ‘Amazonia’ at M&D’s in Glasgow on Wednesday 30 January. The bus will leave school at 9.15 am and return by 3.00 pm. Pupils should wear school sweatshirt, casual bottoms and bring a snack and a packed lunch (if your child receives free meals the school will provide a packed lunch). The cost of this outing is £12 per pupil including a game of 10 Pin Bowling. Please pay through ParentPay or call in to the office for a Barcode letter.

FOOD UPDATE
In line with other educational establishments in East Ayrshire, we have an update regarding food items:
FOOD STUFFS
We have been issued strict temporary guidance from East Ayrshire Council Head of Schools regarding food stuffs provided in schools and Early Childhood Centres. Due to a recent issue with a severe peanut allergy in another school there has been a suspension with the guidance regarding consumption of any item not purchased directly from the Council and shared with groups of pupils. This means that for the time being we will be unable to accept and share birthday cakes or treats in the classes and we will not be able to provide other snacks teachers have bought themselves for their classes. While we hope this precise embargo will not last – the policy is currently being reviewed at senior level within the council I’m sure you will understand the need for us to follow its direction. I will speak with all the children about this matter at assembly. It does NOT affect what children bring in for snack.
We would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that we are nut free school and any food items with nuts should not be brought in for snacks or packed lunches. This is includes items such as Snickers or peanut butter spread. We have several children in the school with nut allergies who should not be exposed to nuts in any way.
Thank you for your understanding with this matter and we will keep you updated.

P5i Step Back In Time
Pupils enjoyed a visit from Darvel Telephone Museum this afternoon. P5i are a lot more knowledgeable about the invention of and improvements to the telephone thanks to Mr Flemmich, 
who runs the museum. Children enjoyed the hands-on experience of touching and using the phones and seeing for themselves how heavy they used to be. Hannah and Rueben can vouch for how heavy the first mobile phones were. They could hardly lift them!
