RRSA Article of the Week Part 3
Mrs Armour
On Saturday 7th March, Mrs McNulty, parents/carers and 33 of our pupils attended Irvine Royal Academy to participate in the Ayrshire Schools Burns Competition.
We had pupils entered in Verse Speaking, Singing and Instrumental sections.
For the first time ever there was a P1-3 Verse Speaking section and we were not restricted to how many entries we could submit so Mrs McNulty thought, the more the merrier!
A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to get our children ready for this competition, a huge well done to our pupils and parents/carers for the work you have put into being prepared.
A great day was had by all. The standard of talent was exceptionally high and not only did our pupils shine with their singing, speaking and musical talents, but also with their positive attitudes and excellent behaviour! We couldn’t be prouder of you all! A huge well done to all our participants.
Under normal circumstances, our 1st and 2nd place prize winners Alex M and Lucy W would represent Ayrshire at the National Competition in Carluke, however, due to COVID-19, unfortunately there will not be a Nationals Competition this year.

We were delighted to enter 2 former pupils, who are now at Cumnock Academy. Casey K was entered in S1/2 singing and Adana W was entered in S1/2 Verse Speaking
Emma Y made it to the final 6 in P4/5 Verse Speaking and got to perform again in front of a big audience
Lucy W made it to the final 6 in P6/7 Verse Speaking and got to perform again in front of a big audience 
As we weren’t able to track down everyone for photos at the event, it was a great excuse for Mrs McNulty to have another photo shoot with us all back at school!

Mrs McNulty hopes to get copies of the official photos taken on the day and will get these to you all when she does.
To support our children and families during the upcoming weeks we have sent children home with Learning Packs filled with activities and access to online resources to support their learning.

As you know we are developing our Relationships Policy this session. This involves exploring our current practice with regards to developing positive relationships within the school community, managing behaviour and promoting our school vision and values.
A big thank you to those parents who managed to attend our focus group last week. As you know we are keen to involve the whole school community in school improvement opportunities and appreciate your time and commitment.
During Get2gether on the 24th February, we will be discussing our Right of the Fortnight:
Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.
Please ask your child how this right is met within New Cumnock Primary School.

As part of our Rights Respecting School initiative each fortnight we learn about a particular article. Tomorrow during our Get2gether we will be exploring article 30 of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child. This states that children and young people who belong to a minority group have the right to share their culture, language, and religion with other people in that group. Please ask your children about what they have learned.

On Monday Mrs McMurdo explained to us that all over the USA 🇺🇸 on Wednesday 15th January, children will be celebrating this special day. In 1964 King received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end racial prejudice in the United States. The US Government brought in laws to ensure equal rights for all US citizens and to give everybody the chance to vote. It is because of Martin Luther King, and others like him, that people in the United States have equal rights today.
Mrs McMurdo carried out a sketch where she gave the children with blue eyes the opportunity to vote. The audience quite rightly pointed out that this was not fair. We were then able to discuss that in order to demonstrate EQUALITY, Mrs McMurdo should have given all the children taking part the same opportunities.
Through this assembly the children were made aware of ARTICLE 1 (Everyone under the age of 18 has all the rights of the Convention on the Rights of the Child) and ARTICLE 7 (The Convention on the Rights of the Child applies to everyone without exception against all forms of discrimination) from the UN Convention on the Rights ofnthe Child.
