Ayrshire Schools Burns Competition 2025

I am delighted to share that this year’s Ayrshire Regional Burns Competition will be held in Belmont Academy, Ayr on Saturday 1st March 2025.

The competition will take place in 5 different disciplines:

  • Verse Speaking
  • Singing
  • Instrumental
  • Bagpiping
  • Chanter

The same pupil may be entered for one, two or more disciplines,
e.g. Singing and Instrumental.

The verse speaking category is open to P1-7 pupils, the other 4 remain available for P4-7 pupils.

As always, I will be volunteering my time to work with pupils who are keen to enter. This time however, will be limited, therefore pupils will be required to also spend time practising at home.

I have very much appreciated the efforts of pupils who have entered these competitions in previous years. We have experienced lots of success in these competitions due to the high standard of talent in our New Cumnock Primary pupils!

If your child wishes to enter the competition, please complete the form below by no later than this Friday 24th January to allow me to make contact with families and complete the official paperwork that is required in order to enter.

I look forward to working with our talented pupils once again!

Primary Burns Nationals Competition 2024

On Saturday we attended the Primary National Burns Competition, held at Clydeview Academy in Gourock.
We had 2 entries in this competition, Daisy M was representing Ayrshire in the P1-3 verse speaking competition and our school choir was representing Ayrshire in the choral competition.
I’m delighted to share that both Daisy and our school choir were awarded 3rd place out of the whole of Scotland, competing against other regions such as Dumfries and Galloway, Lanarkshire, Fife, Edinburgh, Renfrewshire, Scottish Borders, Glasgow  and Grampian.
Our scores in the verse speaking competition also contributed to Ayrshire winning the trophy for best overall verse speaking category on the day too.
What an amazing achievement for our young people and brilliant awards to bring home to Ayrshire!

Ayrshire Burns Competition 2024

Dear parents/carers of children who are entered in the Ayrshire Burns Schools Competition this Saturday.

I have received updated information regarding timings of the event. Please see below from Schools Convenor, Beth Kerr:

Numbers are high, especially in the Primary Verse Speaking sections and as a result we have decided to start registration earlier to allow time to process all entries. Registration will now start at 11am and close at 12.30pm.

We are also going to hold two welcome sessions, 12.35 and 12.50. It’s important that all families attend a welcome session in the Main assembly hall as vital safety information will be given at this time. The children will be informed at registration which welcome session they should attend.

In light of this information, I ask families to meet me in the main reception area at 11.30am. Bring a packed lunch with you and you can eat this whilst you wait before the welcome meeting. This will also give me time to meet with children and get photographs before we are all split into the different disciplines.

I have met with all children this week as part of our final preparations and they know which areas to work on, if any. I’m so proud of the progress they have made and the confidence they show in their performances!

Please remember children should be dressed in full school uniform on Saturday with a touch or tartan if they have any. I have tartan sashes should anyone need something on the day. We also have a bank of school shirts and ties here. Please email me or contact me at the school should you need any prior to the weekend.

Kind regards,

Mrs McNulty
