Home learning packs will be available for collection from our school office tomorrow between 11:30am and 2:00pm. They must be collected by an adult. Please use entrance off School Lane.
If you are able to nominate another parent or carer to collect on your behalf, please notify school first. We are unable to send packs home without consent.
If you are unable to collect tomorrow, please inform school so that we can plan alternative arrangements.
Where possible please email school as our phone lines are very busy at this time.
Thank you for your continued support.

We want to let all parents and carers know that we are working in school to provide Home Learning / Activity packs for all of our children.
There will be a range of suggested learning activities for both online and off, as well as communication from teachers and methods for keeping our community in touch. Whilst things are still very uncertain at this point, we hope to start getting these packs out to everyone from today. If your child is already at home, we will try to make arrangements for the pack to come to you, but please bear with us whilst we try to work out the logistics of this task. When we have final plans in place we will communicate further with you. Regarding all other issues relating to school closure, we await further national and local guidance. |

MESSAGE TO PARENTS FROM DIRECTOR SKILLS, EDUCATION AND LEARNING
Dear Parents
Covid19 Pandemic
I wanted to write to all families to confirm the message from the First Minister earlier this afternoon that schools and nurseries across Scotland will close from the end of the school day on Friday. I will provide more detail on how we plan to support you and your family during this very difficult time as soon as this information becomes available.
We will send all information directly to Headteachers and will ensure that all Council communication channels (Website, Facebook and Twitter) are updated with the latest information for you.
If you are a worker within Health and Social Care or the Emergency Services, or if you have a senior phase pupil preparing for exams, targeted information will follow.
We ask that you continue to remain in contact with your school and your Headteacher if you have any concerns at all. Thank you for your support as we work through this difficult time.
Yours sincerely
Dr Gillian Brydson

Primary 3 have enjoyed reading and learning about the book, ‘Flotsam’. The little boy in the book uses a magnifying glass to look at different sea creatures. We went on a walk around the school to see what we could discover!

In Primary 6-5W, we have been learning all about Local Government.
We spent the afternoon of February 12th visiting the Dumfries and Galloway Council Headquarters and meeting some of the councillors who work there.
The pupils enjoyed a tour around the beautiful building which included the opportunity to have a debate in the Debate Chamber, look around the Party Conference Rooms and even sit at the desk of Elaine Murray.
We had a very enjoyable and valuable experience and the pupils represented the school perfectly.
P6-5W would like to send a huge thank you to the staff at Headquarters and to the parent helpers who made the trip such a success.

In Primary 6-5W, we are learning all about “Local Government”.
This week we have been very busy. On Tuesday 4th February, we welcomed Elaine Murray, the Lead Councillor at Dumfries and Galloway Council to our classroom. Elaine was very impressed by the knowledge, manners and enthusiasm the pupils demonstrated and described the pupils as a “credit to their school”.
On Thursday 6th February, we held our own local election in class to appoint a team of councillors. These councillors will be in charge of making decisions that meet the needs of their classmates.
Congratulations to the Galaxy Party, led by Chloe Geddes, for winning the class election.

In P6-5W we have been participating in inquiry based learning as part of our Moving Models topic.
We learned about a school in Colombia where children had to travel to school on a dangerous zipline. We had to design and create our own cable cars to transport these children to school safely.
We had great fun using boiled eggs as our very own school children and testing our cable cars on a huge zipline that stretched all the way from the top floor of the school down to the ground floor!

Dear Parents and Carers,
As you may appreciate organising photographs for our large school can be complicated, we will do our very best to ensure that all individuals and family group pictures are taken. Our plan, outlined below, is what we will aim to achieve. However, the length of time it takes to get through everyone is variable and sometimes we have to make last minute changes, which we will try to keep you informed of.

FRIDAY:
Thank you.

Pupils from Primary 7M & Primary 7N attended their own Remembrance Day service at the local War Memorial. The pupils recited two famous poems: ‘In Flanders Fields’ and ‘The Poppy’. They also read out poetry that they themselves had written about what things would have been like during the war. They took the time to look at the many names on the memorial statue and also at the plaque which commemorates one Laurieknowe’s former pupils. (Private James MacKenzie fought and died in WW1.) The pupils did a great job and should be very proud of themselves.

Pupils from Primary 7 who attend the Laurieknowe Netball Club were invited to attend the Nithsdale Sports Awards on Thursday 7th November. The club had nominated their coach Andrea for the ‘Coach of the Year’ award and had also been nominated themselves for ‘Team of the Year’. It was a very enjoyable event and we were very proud to have been finalists.

After learning so much about the Titanic during Term 1, P6-5W have put a lot of time and effort into recreating some of the sleeping cabins from the Titanic. We all tried to be as creative as we could and many of us had to share our ideas family members to work together on creating our work.
The results were fantastic! We spent an afternoon in class showing off our wonderful work and providing peer feedback using post-it notes.
Our shoebox cabins are on display in the school along with all the lovely feedback notes we received. If you see our work around the school, feel free to write your own feedback on post-it note!

Primary 7M took part in the University of Edinburgh’s challenge for maths week. It was called ‘The Shannon Switching Game’. We all tried to find solutions to see if it was easier to be a ‘cutter’ or a ‘joiner’. You can see some of our photos below. We discussed whether it mattered who started each game, the layout of the games and if anyone had an advantage in each game.

The Nursery morning class wrapped up with hats, cosy jackets and gloves for a walk to Tesco this week to buy some snack. The children chose fruit and had a go scanning at the self-service tills. To give us some energy for our walk, we had a quick snack before heading back.

In Primary 6-5W, we know that maths doesn’t just take place in jotters and textbooks, maths is all around us. As part of the Maths Week Scotland activities going on around Laurieknowe Primary school, we decided to cover our classroom in maths!
Working in pairs, we covered almost every surface in the class with our maths work (including Mr West’s desk!). In P6-5W, we know that we are better learners when we can have fun in maths and help each other out.

P7N enjoyed taking Maths outdoors today, tying in with Maths Week Scotland activities taking place in school!
The pupils were given a ‘Frogs & Lily Pad’ problem solving task to complete in groups with chalk and 6 bean bags. Some of the groups solved the problem in the target of 15 moves! A lot of thinking and acting out the solution were needed for this one! Do you think you could solve the problem? Click on the link above and have a go!

They got the chance to visit the main assembly hall as well as taking part in a Basketball session delivered by the Academy’s PE staff.
