Respectme, is offering free practical Online Safety Training for adults in Glasgow on the 6 September and 25 October 2016 between 10am-12noon. The training is designed to increase adults’ awareness of bullying and the other risks and challenges children and young people face online. This training includes a practical, hands-on session, which will take you through the process for setting and managing profiles and privacy settings on social media channels such as Facebook and Instagram, to help ensure children and young people’s online safety.

A place on the training can be requested here. Delegates will be given full joining instructions when they book their place online. Practitioners who would like to request training for parents at their own establishment should email Lisa Armstrong.

The next meeting of Parent Council Representatives will take place on Tuesday 17 May 2016 in Angus House, Forfar at 7pm. This meeting will replace the meeting which was due to take place on the 7 June 2016.

A member of the Care Inspectorate has been invited along to the meeting to speak with you as they are currently undertaking an inspection of Children Services in Angus.

Proposals to Change the Secondary School Week

Following Angus Council’s decision on 10 December 2015 to request further consultation on the proposed changes to the secondary school week, we are now carrying out an electronic survey to find out the views of young people, secondary school staff, parents and carers on this important issue. The survey will open on 11 February 2016 and close at midnight on 18 March 2016.

Rationale for Changing the Secondary School Week Structure

•       To provide greater flexibility in the curriculum
•       To remain efficient and encompass this flexibility
•       To give more time for learning in subjects

The proposals aim to introduce a 33 period week to all Angus secondary schools from August 2017. Each period would last 50 minutes. The school week could then be organised in one of two ways:

Option A – three days and two days. This model organises the week so there would be two different finishing times used during the week.

Option B – four long days and one short day. This model organises the week so that there would be no classes on a Friday afternoon.

Parent Council Representative Meetings

As agreed at last meeting two additional Parent Council Representatives meetings have been scheduled to take place on the following dates:

1 March 2016 – focus is secondary school week, current consultation, information and discussion.

9 March 2016 – primary focused workshop, discussion of any issues.

Both will take place in Angus House, Forfar and will start at 7pm.

Keeping Children Safe in a Digital World – Tuesday 15 March 2016

We are delighted to invite you to local events on Online Safety. With over 91% of children living in a household with access to the internet, children have never been more accessible to offenders online (CEOP; 2015). It is everyone’s responsibility to educate young people to the risks, to identify when they may be being harmed and to intervene to protect our children and young people when necessary.

We welcome parents, carers, teachers, social workers, community workers, sports coaches, police officers and anyone with a role in supporting children and young people to come along.

There is no need to apply… simply email acpc@angus.gov.uk either individually or as a team/service to let us know what session you want to come along to.
