The Local Islay Mod

The Mod is a great way to learn and create Gaelic masterpieces to keep the Scottish Gaelic language going! Lots of people went to the Mod this year and even won some gold medals and trophies for their amazing Gaelic singing. 

Firstly, we have a list of amazing p1-2s that came to the Mod: Poppy, Emmy, Harper, Holly, Bryn, Hugh, Zoe, Finlay, and Nola! We also done some great interviews with some of the p1-2s to listen to their thoughts about the mod, “I loved the mod so much and I even got a golden medal!” – Finlay, “I really liked the doing Gaelic at the mod and I also won a trophy!” -Hugh, “I liked seeing my mum and dad at the mod with me!” -Poppy, “I liked winning a trophy and loved singing in Gaelic!” -Harper. 

Secondly, we also have some winners for the Gaelic art competition! Findlay in p7 got 3rd place in the art competition, then we have Hannah p6 coming in on 2nd place that amazing! Lastly, we have Soarcha, who won 1st place in the competition that’s outstanding! 

Going to the mod was a great experience for everyone it’s great for all kids and adults to learn, sing and show of their wonderful talents! Going to the Islay Mod is a must do!

Kildalton Trip

Monday the second of September 2024

We visited Kildalton cross with a few more people following which are 2 people from a computer science university named Saint Andrews and a person from Islay museum.

We and the scientists visited the Kildalton cross because of a school trip to investigate the cross because a fungus called lichen was eating away the carvings of the cross, that was made in the 8th century. The cross is about Christianity and had carvings about a lady holding a baby and had more cravings which looked really interesting which people think is Jesus.

We were split up into groups for different things like, making a little clip about Kildalton, taking photos, drawing anything at the place and 360 degree photo which was really fun because we had to hide from the camera when it takes a photo. After everyone finished each group we went back to the school a few kids that was: Hannah, Brody, Ella and Freddy. Went to take more 360 photos around the school, but unfortunately we couldn’t do much pictures outside because it was raining. But we still had fun! And that’s the end of our amazing and interesting trip Kildalton trip! Hope you enjoyed reading this!

Music With Keira

This term Port Ellen Primary have been getting visits from the local musician Keira who has been teaching them how to play some Scottish instruments like the Tin Whistle, Harp and Fiddle. The aim is that at the end Kira will pick the people who are best at playing each instrument and we will all learn a  song all together.

We learnt how to play Mary Had a Little Lamb on the Tin Whistle, and everyone got a go on the Harp and Fiddle.  Everyone learnt what the different colored strings mean on a Harp and that the thing you play a Fiddle with is called a Bow.  It is very interesting learning new instruments.

Trèoir

This year three people called Amy, Gyles and Lynn came in to do Trèoir with us.  This is a project that involves art, music and Gaelic.

To start off we got into a circle in the hall and we all said our names in Gaelic.  My name in Gaelic in Seamus. Then Jyles made a rap song about three deer sitting on a fence trying to make 1 pound out of 85 pence. That was for music.

Then we had to paint pictures of things we see in everyday life like trees, flowers and clouds. We had to draw and paint a tree with a bench and a bush. It also had to be 3D.

Then finally we had to make our own sentence about our picture with a mixture of Gaelic words and English words.  I have enjoyed learning in Gaelic.
