Applying for jobs in P1/2
All the boys and girls in P1/2 have been busy applying for jobs in the Port Ellen Circus. Job vacancies in the circus include clowns, acrobats, jugglers, tight rope walkers and a ringmaster. We had to pick which job we wanted to apply for and then we had to fill in an application for saying why we think we would be good at this job.
Ruaraidh applied to be an acrobat because he is good at hula hooping.
Ronan applied to be a clown because he thinks he is funny.
Finlay applied to be a ring master because he has a big loud voice.
We have to wait to see if we get a job interview – fingers crossed!
Museum of Scottish Scientists
P45 have been researching famous Scottish scientists from the past and creating power points about them. We have lots of famous scientists and engineers who have helped to change the world we live in for the better. We have even made a virtual museum you can visit to find out more about them. Visit the My Museum Glow page to find out more.
All about P1/2 this week
This week we have continued to work hard on our circus topic. Struan, Bronagh, Mirren, Katie and Jasmine are fantastic at hula hooping. Ronan has managed to learn to juggle with two bean bags!
Murray is getting really good at walking the tight rope!
We have been doing loads of rhyming work. We even made our own MTV style nursery rhyme videos! They are fantastic! We planned our costumes and props for the video.
We discovered how to make vokis this week and we all made our own voki to tell our favourite nursery rhyme – check them out on our glow page!
Happy hloidays and happy valentines day! xx
Voki rhymers!
Today P1/2 all created their own voki. We worked hard to make them say our favourite nursery rhyme. It was great fun!

Enjoy!
Little Miss Muffet sat on a hill,
Little Miss Muffet caught a chill.
Little Miss Muffet sat on a cat,
Then she realised it was a big fat rat!
Little Miss Muffet sat on a mat,
Then she saw a very fat rat!
Little Miss Muffet sat on a log,
Little Miss Muffet stroked a dog.
Little Miss Muffet sat on a rock,
Little Miss Muffet dropped a sock!
Little Miss Muffet sat on a chair,
Little Miss Muffet brushed her hair.
Little Miss Muffet let off a flare!

Burns Celebrations
It was a celebration of Robert Burns on 25th January at Port Ellen Primary School. Children had spent weeks learning their poems to recite to the eminent judges on the day, and we couldn’t wait to see who won. We stopped early for lunch, which included the traditional Haggis, neeps and tatties. Mrs Carmichael said the traditional Burns lines over the haggis before it was served.
After lunch we held a ceilidh with parents attending for a dance and a song. Aileas entertained us on the fiddle, and the Highland Dancers were amazingly springy as they danced. The children have all been learning dancing, and it was great to see them dancing with their parents and friends to the Gay Gordans and Canadian Barn dance. The winners of the poetry competition were announced and were Murray in P1,Bronagh in P2, Abbie in P3, Maisie in P4, Ellen in P5, Aileas in P6 and Eilidh in p7. All in all a fantastic celebration of Scottish Culture.

National Museum of Scotland Glow Meet
We had a Glow Meet on the 28th January down at Miss Macrae’s class room. We where talking to all sorts of workers that work there in the National Museum of Scotland; they were Designers, Exhibition Officer, Curator and a Conservator. The Designer designs everything that involves stuff like pictures. The Exhibition Officer needs to make sure that they only have 25 words or less on the tag and they need to make sure that they is a lot of facts. The Exhibits can be all the same or they can be all different things. A Curator is someone who looks after all the old things that goes in the Museum. You can find things if your on a walk on the beech or the woods or any other places that you might find some things. I thought the meet was very good because I got to learn all the different jobs there are in running a museum.

Researching Scottish Scientists
My class is researching Scottish Scientists and my Scientist is William Ramsay and he discovered the noble gases. Williams Ramsay was born on 2nd October 1852 and he died on the 23rd July 1916, at the age of 63. William was married to Margaret Johnstone. William and Margaret had one son and one daughter. People call William Sir William Ramsay and he won a Nobel prize for chemistry. He helped people think about the world around them.

The World War 1 Medals
We are doing a history topic and we are trying to make our own museum and I brought in some medals from the War. They belonged to a man named Charlie Baum who was in the ambulance association and was killed while going to pick up a body. He got the medals for being part of the War and saving people’s lives. My Grandad got the medals sent to him as he was a relative. He even got parts of Charlie Baum’s clothing and other things.
My Dancing
When I was 5 I started highland dancing and I am still dancing now. My mum and dad even my little sister Natalie supports me very well, even if I don’t win any they always say to me I did my very best and I will get one next time and I am a winner to them. Eilidh and Katie dance with me too and they are great dancers and they support me and we support them. In 2008 I had entered Cowal games and at the end I got my results and I won the runner up trophy, I was jumping for joy when I found out. In 2009 I entered the Dunoon competition and I won the national trophy and I was incredibly pleased with myself and my dancing teacher that helped me with my dancing. I have loads of different medals from 1st to 5th and a mini shield for my dancing exams.I hope this year I will be very successful and I hope Eilidh and Katie will too.

Museum of Islay Life
We went to the Museum of Islay Life on Tuesday 18th January. Primary 6 and 7 came with us. After that we went to the waterworks at Torra.
We got on the bus and went to Port Mor. We met Mr Reavey. He told us what the oldest house on Islay was. Then we went to the museum. When we got inside it had lots of tools and dresses with beds. My favourite exhibit was a wheel chair because they got to push old people on it. The wheel chair had a steering wheel and a rug on top of the seat. The rug was made at the Islay Woolen Mill during World War 2.
Then we went to the waterworks at Torra. Two people showed us around. They told us about how the water gets cleaned. First it was brown, then it was white, then it got really clear.
I liked going to the museum as it had lots of cool things inside. The water works had lots of pipes with water going through them and was really interesting.

My Christmas
Christmas day 2010 was the best one ever. I was looking forward to it but it almost ended because of mum’s cooking!
I got for Christmas Spy Gear, FIFA, a lamp, a sleigh, a torch and a controller. I played with all of them. We had breakfast, which is when my mum almost choked my cousin by not taking the plastic rind off the black pudding!
I went sleighing with my cousins. We had a crazy time. Someone had built a jump and it was camouflaged with the snow. I went flying and landed face first. It was sore!
When we were done we had Christmas dinner, it was turkey my favourite. I had a wonderful Christmas.

On Christmas morning I had lots of presents. I got an Ipod Touch, a fashion set, lots of sweeties and lots more. After I opened all of my presents I had breakfast, mini bagels.
I went to my dad’s at lunch time and I got a motorbike. We went to our Nanny Kay for Christmas dinner but my mum dropped our cheesecake and it went all over Jack! What a disaster! It was very funny.
it was the best Christmas ever because I got everything I wanted and it was very funny when mum dropped the cheesecake. It was a calm Christmas.

Electrical Christmas Models
The end of the electricity topic meant a challenge, in groups to use an electrical circuit to make a Christmas related model. The groups had to plan, design and build a model relating to Christmas using an electrical circuit. Points were awarded for excellent design, originality and good use of circuits. At the end we had a Rudolf with a light up nose, a snowman whose carrot nose glowed orange, a Stop Here Santa Sign that had Rudolf’s eyes rotating and a christmas quiz where rudolfs nose glows if you get the correct answer. The Christmas quiz was voted the winner.
St Columba Art
St Columba came over to Scotland from Ireland in 563 AD to found a monastery on Iona. We have been hearing his life story as recorded in a book written 100 years after his death by another monk Aiden. Working in pairs to create large collages of different points in his life helped us tell his story. We also wrote a story from the life of Columba in the style of an illuminated manusscript like the book of Kells. Here are some of the stories.
Columba and the Loch Ness Monster
One night when Columba and the other monks were travelling over Loch Ness they heard wailing which often meant a death. When they got to the other side there was a funeral was tacking place.
When Columba asked what had happened a young man replied
“My dad was killed by the monster.” Columba cave him a suspicious look. He turned to Luna and said
“Swim over to the other side and get me that boat!”
Luna slipped off his sandals and took off his cloak and plunged into the water. He was about half way across when he saw the monster.
Just as it went for him Columba ran into the water and made the sign of the cross. He forced it to leave. The monster never entered the waters again.
by Scott
One night an old man was dying in a monastery and said Eithne, your son will be a great Christian and visit my grave. That night an angel came to visit Eithne with a beautiful cloak full of flowers. The angel said it’s not yours to keep. Eithne was crying because she couldn’t keep the cloak. Then she gave birth to Columba, who was special.
Eithne gave Columba to the monks for God and so she can go to heaven. She could only visit him1 time a month, but still loved him.
Columba heard some boys outside shouting Colm Cille, churchy Colm. Columba got really angry and chased them down to the river. But he grew up to be a very famous Christian.

Carved Stones
A long time ago people in Scotland carved stones instead of writing. We don’t know why they did it. Perhaps it was to mark a grave or tell people about something that happened. All the stones have different symbols on them, each of them mean something different. The Picts carved lots of mythical beasts on their stones. You can find lots of carved stones all over Scotland. In Orkney there is the ring of Brodga and there is a big hole in the middle of the stones. Some people think a carved mirror means a woman. Carved stones are one of the only things we can get information from that time, because all the other materials have rotted away. The Gaels carved stones had crosses on them because they were Christian. Here are some we made in class.

Life at the Time of Columba
INTRODUCTION
In the time of Columba back in the 6th century Scotland wasn’t the same as today. Columba founded lots of monasteries to let people learn about God. He founded one on Iona in Scotland.
PEOPLE IN SCOTLAND
The Picts, Gaels and Britons. The Picts are warlike and very vicious. They speak a welsh like language. They lived in the North and East of Scotland. The Britons spoke welsh too. The Gaels spoke Gaelic and were Christian and warlike. They lived in western Scotland and they came from Ireland. They had very neat art and carvings. Columba crowned the king of the Gaels.
EVERYDAY LIFE
They lived in big round houses, and they ate meat and vegetables and barley. They used sheep wool to make clothes. Some houses were on top of water.

Christmas Fair Produce
In primary 4&5 we have been busy preparing items to sell at the Christmas fair. We are looking at money this term in maths and have set up and run our own shops to find out about profit and loss. Fot the fair we conducted some market research to find out what parents and children wanted to buy. It showed us that christmas cakes and calendars were a popular item, so we decided to make both as well as other general decorations.
We learned about weight and different types of dried fruit as we made our cakes, which we then had to decorate. Mrs Clark does a lot of cake decorating, so she helped us roll out icing and marzipan. We made our cakes look like presents with characters
on top.
For our calendar we took photos of ourselves in different poses and then drew or painted backgrounds that matched the month of the year. Mrs Clark then used photo editing software to put the children onto the backgrounds, and placed the pictures in a calendar template. All the items we made sold out at the Christmas fair.
ELECTRICITY
In p45 we have been learning all about electricity and what a wonderful thing it is. We have made lots of electrical circuits, created our own games using switches and found out what fun you can have with a balloon, some hair and a knowledge of the movement of electrons in an atom. A great explanation of many of these items can be found on Youtube under Bill Nye Science Guy, so check him out! Next week we are going to take all we know about electricity and use it to design and build an electrical Christmas Gizmo DoohDaah.
