At Bowmore Primary School, our curriculum is designed to help children become confident learners who are curious about the world and ready for the future.
We follow Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence, which aims to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes young people need for learning, life and work. Our curriculum supports children to become:
-
Successful learners
-
Confident individuals
-
Responsible citizens
-
Effective contributors
Learning is planned to be engaging, relevant and challenging, while recognising that every child progresses at their own pace.

Children learn across the eight curriculum areas of Curriculum for Excellence:

The Four Contexts for Learning
Learning at Bowmore Primary happens through the four contexts for learning within Curriculum for Excellence.
Discrete Curriculum Areas and Subjects
Children develop knowledge and skills in the eight curriculum areas through engaging and purposeful lessons.
Interdisciplinary Learning
Topics and projects allow children to make connections across different subjects. For example, a topic may link science, social studies and literacy through shared learning experiences.
Ethos and Life of the School
The wider life of the school plays an important role in children’s development. Opportunities such as clubs, pupil leadership groups, ChangeMakers and school events help children develop confidence, responsibility and teamwork.
Personal Achievement
Children are encouraged to celebrate achievements both in and out of school. These are shared through assemblies, Seesaw and classroom discussions.
Learning Levels
Curriculum for Excellence is organised into levels which broadly correspond to stages of learning. However, children progress through these levels at different rates depending on their individual development.
At Bowmore Primary we ensure that learning is carefully planned so that it is appropriate for each child’s stage, allowing them to be challenged and supported as needed.

Active and Engaging Learning
We believe children learn best when they are actively involved in their learning. Active learning can include outdoor learning, school visits and practical experiences, but it also means encouraging children to think deeply, ask questions, solve problems and work collaboratively.
Through active learning approaches, pupils develop important skills such as creativity, resilience, teamwork and independent thinking.
Preparing Children for the Future
The world is constantly changing and education must help children develop the skills they need to adapt and succeed.
Our curriculum encourages pupils to:
-
think critically and creatively
-
work collaboratively
-
develop digital skills
-
communicate confidently
-
take responsibility for their learning
By combining strong academic foundations with real-world experiences, we aim to prepare our learners for the opportunities and challenges of the future.
