It is not unusual for teaching and support staff to receive letters of praise and thanks from the pupils at St Joseph’s in Helensburgh – the ethos and pastoral care is almost palpable and many who visit us often comment as much. Everyone’s a winner and the children greatly appreciate the staff. However, so impressed with her teacher was Isobel in P7 that she wrote to Blue Peter to ask for Miss Boyd to be given a Blue Peter badge because, as Isobel said, ‘Miss Boyd is just great!’.

Generation Science visit Luing Primary
Generation Science visited Luing Primary School, with their workshop Fizz, Boom, Bang! All of the children including pre 5; were to be scientists for the morning. After donning protective gear, the experiments began. The challenge was to make a cool, colourful reaction.
First of all the children had to discover whether liquids were acid, neutral or alkaline, matching up the colour on an indicator chart. After this they then mixed up liquids and powders, making fizzing and colourful potions. Continue reading Generation Science visit Luing Primary
Invitation to Parklands Cinema Morning
Parents, Argyll and Bute staff and friends of the school are invited to a morning showcasing learning experiences at Parklands School. We will be presenting an iMovie showing learning and teaching across the school including Primary and Secondary classes, the Nuture group and ASD class.

Generation Science at Ashfield
Pupils at Ashfield Primary undertook a science mission yesterday to create a colourful chemical reaction with the help of the Rebecca and Laura from Generation Science and their Fizz, Boom, Bang workshop. The children were introduced to the properties of acids, alkalis and neutrals and witnessed a giant party popper going off in the classroom. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a hands on science experiment.
iCycle at Ashfield
Primary 6 and 7 pupils at Ashfield Primary began their iCycle training on Tuesday led by classroom assistant, Mrs Paterson, and parent helpers, Mr and Mrs Gascoigne. After a thorough safety check of bikes and helmets the children were introduced to the basics of cycling on the road including looking back and signalling. Initial training is being completed in the playground but the children will be putting their new skills into practice on the road in a few weeks. Residents of Achnamara beware!
Tarbert Academy Drama Club
Tarbert Academy drama club recently took part in the Argyll Drama Festival which took place in Ardrishaig village hall. The club has at present 18 members, 14 from P6 and 7, 2 from first year and one each from second and third years. The play they performed was “A Thirty Minute Dream” which is an abridged form of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
EU winners
A team of pupils from Hermitage Primary have won the Argyll and Bute heat of the Euro Quiz and will be traveling to Edinburgh to compete in the final. This is the first time Hermitage has won the regional heat and the pupils are very excited to be representing Argyll and Bute in the debating chamber of the Scottish Parliament. The qualifying quiz consisted of 4 rounds testing their knowledge on geography, languages, culture, institutions and lots of other aspects of the EU. Continue reading EU winners
Hermitage Primary football team.
The Hermitage Primary School football team travelled to the Toryglen Regional Football Centre to participate in the Scottish Schools National Finals. The finals were played in two sections and Hermitage boys won two matches and lost one. As runners-up in their section they then played in a play off for third place which they achieved with a 3-1 scoreline. Well done boys, 3rd in Scotland is a wonderful result! There was also the consolation that the only team to beat them were the winners of the tournament!
A Hearty Thanks from P.7 at St. Joseph’s!
Primary 7 children thoroughly enjoyed their Outdoor Residential Week at Ardlui. Not only did they thrive in the great outdoors but they have returned with a qualification in first aid training! They learned about the skills required, from dealing with minor cuts to responding to emergency situations. This was carried out in a very practical way with the children being involved in role play scenarios. The staff from Loch Lomond Outdoor Centre were delighted to put their own recent first aid training into practice.

Cardross Primary
P1and p6 are working on transitional movies for our nursery providers. We are hoping our pre 5 pupils can get a glimpse of life in primary 1 at Cardross.
Going Potty!
On the 5th of February 2013 Ardchattan Primary School went to Argyll Pottery to learn about making clay pots. They went because the topic they are looking at this term is “Change”.
When they got there, Hugh showed them how to make a jug. Then they threw pots, which doesn’t mean we chucked them around the room, it means that we made pots out of clay on the potter’s wheel. They turned out pretty good even though Jacob pressed a bit too hard and the top of his flew off!

Cardross primary are excited to be part of Argyll iPads. We look forward to connecting with others across the authority on exciting projects.
Cross country
Hermitage Primary are very proud of their cross country runners who recently competed at the Toyota Cross Country Relay in Helensburgh. The event was very well supported with 10 local primary school taking part and 7 different schools represented in the medal winners. Primary 7 defend the trophy from last year though against some stiff competition. Well done to everybody who took part.
INNOVATIONS IN LEADERSHIP
Spearheading the authority’s priority of developing leadership in schools, St. Joseph’s in Helensburgh has already started on the journey. With reports soon to be distributed to children, the staff were treated to a refresher course on the process of on-line reporting on SEEMIS by a member of the clerical team! Staff gathered for a twilight session as Mrs Diamond used her excellent ICT skills to lead the teaching staff through a presentation. Teaching staff were once again grateful for her input and willingness to share her skills.
