On the 5th of February 2013 Ardchattan Primary School went to Argyll Pottery to learn about making clay pots. They went because the topic they are looking at this term is “Change”.
When they got there, Hugh showed them how to make a jug. Then they threw pots, which doesn’t mean we chucked them around the room, it means that we made pots out of clay on the potter’s wheel. They turned out pretty good even though Jacob pressed a bit too hard and the top of his flew off!
We also made little hand made creatures out of clay as well as the pots. After that we had a look round the back of the pottery to look at the dyes and the kiln. Hugh told us how he fired the kiln with logs in the day and gas in the night so the kiln can cool down slowly so the pots don’t crack. Hugh said he would fire our clay pots and animals and we would get them at the end of March because it is very expensive to buy all the logs and gas to fire the kiln, so Hugh only fires it when it is full instead of every time he made a couple of pots.
