Orienteering Medals!

Barcaldine Primary School sent six children along to the annual OLI Interschool’s Orienteering competition on Friday morning. Dunstaffnage in Dunbeg was the location and we were very thankful for the lovely dry weather, it makes all the difference when it is dry!!! One of our six was unable to take part in the orienteering competition as he had a sports injury but he was photographer and supporter for the rest of the troops all day long. Luss Win Rotary Photographic Competition

Two pupils from Luss Primary School took top prizes in the Helensburgh Rotary Club Photographic Competition. A P7 pupil won the Intermediate 11-13 years category and a P5 pupil took second prize in the Junior 7-11 years category. Pupils and their families will attend a presentation ceremony in Helensburgh on 15th April where the overall competition winner will be announced.

St Joseph’s Scoop The Double…..AGAIN!

Entries for the Helensburgh Rotary Club Young Photographer Competition 2014 were judged on 22 March, 2014 and St Joseph’s came out tops….for the second year running! Last year St Joseph’s had two winners in the Junior Category and this year again we had two prize winners in the Junior Section; one child won (age 7) third prize with one child (age 9) taking the top prize.

Colgrain are triumphant at Lomond School

On the evening of Friday 14th March , Colgrain Primary School competed in the Lomond Netball Tournament. The tournament took place at Lomond Sports Hall. Everyone displayed excellent team spirit and gave 100%! We came an astounding 1st place, after competing against very strong teams. Thank you to Mrs Cormack and Mrs Jack for helping us to achieve this!

Small Isles Primary nominated for Community Archives Award

In Spring 2012, Small Isles children became involved in the Crofting Connections Project. During the summer term they invited the community to be involved too by hosting four Crofting Community Cafes in school. Each cafe had a crofting theme (Crofting the land, Life as a child, Crofting Culture and Crofting at Home) and a panel of ‘experts’ from the community were invited to come and share their memories and experiences of the theme by answering questions from the children, leading discussions and having drinks and home-cooked treats.

Dunoon Grammar School’s Mathematicians

Dunoon Grammar School’s team of four mathematicians from S1 and S2 won 12th place in the UKMT Team Challenge held at the University of the West of Scotland. The team enjoyed competing against 28 other teams from the west of Scotland region. The challenge consisted of four rounds including a cross-number, maths shuttle and an intense relay race. Congratulations to Hazel Oxland, Willow Grieve, Conor Adams and Katie Lambert for an excellent result against some very fierce competition. The Scottish Book Awards

Primary 1 – 3 pupils from Strone Primary School had a very exciting day out in Glasgow on Wednesday 5th March, attending the Scottish Children’s Book Awards at the Mitchell Library. All the pupils at Strone have been reading the shortlisted titles and voted online for their favourites. At the awards, pupils were able to get their own books signed by the authors and watched the ceremony as the winners were announced.
More literacy themed activities were enjoyed on Thursday 6th March when pupils took part in World Book Day and dressed up as their favourite book characters.

Oban High Supports Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday for Six Nations

Oban High School students journeyed to Murrayfield on Saturday 8 March for the Six Nations rugby match with Scotland v France. Although all were disappointed by the outcome, it was nonetheless an incredibly exciting match right up to the remaining two minutes of play.

Budding Engineers at St Joseph’s!

Last session P5 (now current P6), under the excellent guidance and tuition of class teacher Catherine McLean, entered the Scottish Engineer’s Leaders Award organised by STEM in conjunction with Strathclyde University’s Faculty of Engineering. The project was to create an engineering design for the future and with such a wide remit, the creativity of the children exploded onto the page! The children had to submit a drawing of their design along with a written piece to describe it.

Kilchrenan Wins Rolls Royce Award

Kilchrenan Primary has been selected as a Special Merit Award Winner in the Rolls Royce Science Prize. This award, and a prize of ÂŁ1000 for science teaching and learning, comes as the result of the school’s focus on science in it’s improvement plan and follows the submission of an action plan after a summer school in the National Science Learning Centre in York. P4/5 were showing their creativity on Friday, 21st February and having a good time into the bargain, when they had the chance to work with Alison McAlpine on designing and making a banner which may end up in the athletes’ village for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Volleyball Tournament at Dunoon Grammar School

Dunoon Grammar School hosted the annual Volleyball Tournament organised by Mrs Fiona McLean on Monday 3 March. The contestants arrived from the various local Primary Schools and the rules were explained to everyone. As normal it was a very well organised event with every child thoroughly enjoying the day! Dunoon Teams A & C made their way to the final with Dunoon Team H losing out to Strachur for third place.

Lorn Mathsfest

On the 12th February the fifteenth Annual Lorn Mathsfest was held in Oban High School. Forty-eight S1 pupils and forty-eight P7 pupils from the associated Primary Schools formed teams of four. These teams worked together enthusiastically during the day to solve written and practical maths problems and puzzles. One of the written problems was in French and another was in Gaelic!

Park Pupils Impress at Burns Event!

A few weeks ago, Primary 7s at Park School entered the Burns competition at the Corran Halls. After weeks of preparation, the pupils took part in different categories and clearly impressed the judges as they returned to Park with 10 medals in total! These were as follows: silver and bronze in Recitation; silver in Solo Singing; gold and silver in Instrumental; gold and bronze in Art; and gold, silver and bronze in Writing in Scots.

Congratulations to our Primary 7s – we are very proud of their achievements!

UK Maths Challenge 2014

On Thursday 6th February, 60 of our S3 and S4 pupils competed in the UK Intermediate Maths Challenge. The UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge is an hour long, intriguing multiple choice question paper, which is designed to stimulate interest in maths in large numbers of pupils.
The top 40% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate in the ratio 1:2:3 and each school receives a Best in School certificate.

Dogs Trust Centre visit Dunoon Primary!

On Wednesday 12th February Alison and Alfie from the Dogs Trust Centre in Glasgow came to visit our school. Alison told the children about the work carried out there and also discussed with them the important aspects of dog care. She emphasised the need to clean up after our dogs when exercising them in public places. This tied in with our Eco Schools Committee who are organising a poster competition to highlight the need to keep our streets clean and free from dog mess.

Dunoon Grammar School Badminton Winners

A number of our pupils took part in the Annual Argyll and Bute Schools badminton championships last week. Our pupils were a credit to Dunoon Grammar School. Their standard of play was exceptional and they returned with a number of titles.
