On Wednesday 12th February Alison and Alfie from the Dogs Trust Centre in Glasgow came to visit our school. Alison told the children about the work carried out there and also discussed with them the important aspects of dog care. She emphasised the need to clean up after our dogs when exercising them in public places. This tied in with our Eco Schools Committee who are organising a poster competition to highlight the need to keep our streets clean and free from dog mess.
She demonstrated with the help of a child how responsible dog owners should deal with this problem in our local community. Alfie was found in a box behind a bin in Glasgow’s East End. He was discovered and rescued along with his sisters and taken to the Dog’s Trust in Glasgow, where they were placed in an incubator. After a few weeks of intensive care the puppies were strong enough to be rehomed. Alfie’s three sisters were adopted by a farmer and became goatherds. Alison needed a doggie companion to visit schools to educate children on the importance of taking care of their family pets and instantly fell in love with Alfie! As you can see from the photo Alfie is very happy in his role and enjoyed meeting everyone. Alison had an excellent rapport with the children and ably answered many questions from the audience. As they departed the pupils were given the opportunity to offer a special vote of thanks to Alfie in a very caring and respectful manner.
