Orienteering event at Castle Toward

On Thursday 31st May 2012 Toward Primary School, Fiona MacLean (PE Teacher) and Lindsay Mitchell (Active Schools) hosted an Orienteering Event at Castle Toward. This annual event gives P7 pupils from throughout Cowal the opportunity to participate in a challenging and energetic event where they have to use the skills they have been taught by reading maps, using compasses and getting lots of exercise. Olympic Themed Youth Games in Oban

A spectacle of dance, music and colour, inspired by the Olympic Games was showcased at the opening ceremony of the Argyll and Bute Youth Games in Oban on Thursday 14th June.
A record 598 of our first and second year pupils from Argyll and Bute’s secondary schools staged their own version of the Olympics to welcome in Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week.
A specially composed mass fusion Olympic themed dance was performed at Mossfield Stadium by all of the pupils participating in the games. Continue reading Olympic Themed Youth Games in Oban

Diamond Jubilee Tea held at Bunessan Primary

Diamond Jubilee Tea was held on the 14th June 2012

A fun afternoon was had at the ‘Diamond Jubilee Tea’ held at Bunessan Primary School. The pupils put on a diamond show for all to enjoy. The pipers, the Choir, the Pre-5 pupils, the Gaelic songs made it a wonderful afternoon which I am sure the queen is sorry she missed! The afternoon was finished off with an Orcadian Strip the Willow down the path to the school.

Scottish Education Awards – Port Ellen Primary

On Tuesday 12th June Staff and pupils from Port Ellen Primary attended a glittering ceremony at the Hilton hotel in Glasgow as finalists for the Scottish Education Awards in the learning through technology category. There were schools and representatives from all over the country present and the winners from three finalists in each category were announced by Jackie Bird.  The finalists had been chosen from over 650 nominations, so it was a great honour to have made it this far.

Dalintober Primary School Celebrate Diamond Jubilee

Everyone at Dalintober Primary School got in to the swing of things to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style!   Bunting was put up around the school and we all wore red, white and blue or royal costumes!   Every class included Jubilee Lessons in their curriculum and lots of interesting facts were found out.

John Muir Trust launches CfE resource at Lochgilphead High!

A new resource for teachers and outdoor educators produced by the John Muir Trust shows how its educational initiative, the John Muir Award, can be used to help deliver the Curriculum for Excellence. Groups undertaking the Award can complete a range of activities across curriculum areas, such as building bat boxes in technology, measuring trees in mathematics, or surveying wildlife in the school grounds for science.
The resource, an eight-page guide (pdf) complete with visual mind map that’s been endorsed by the Chief Executive of Education Scotland, was launched on Friday 9 March at Lochgilphead High School by Michael Russell, the Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning. ‘Lochbeg’s’ momentous occasion!

22nd May was an exciting day for the pupils and staff of Lochnell and Dunbeg Primary Schools, or ‘Lochbeg’ as they were renamed for this momentous occasion. The two schools engaged in the ultimate in interdisciplinary learning for the whole term from Easter onwards as they competed for their country for prestigous online medals. The pupils across the schools were split into six teams and could earn medals in every aspect of school and out-of-school life if their efforts correlated with one of the six Olympic and Paralympic values, such as friendship, fairness, determination etc. Continue reading ‘Lochbeg’s’ momentous occasion!

Bookbug ‘Get Fit’ Olympics Celebration

On Tuesday 12th June, the Oban Bookbug team took over Atlantis Leisure and invited all the local participants to a Bookbug ‘Get Fit’ Olympics Celebration.  The session was crammed with active songs and dances featuring the specially penned Olympic Torch song.  Everyone took part and there were 65 adults and children in attendance.

Olympic Torch Relay Trip

On Friday 8th June as part of our Curriculum for Excellence project on Ancient Greece and the Olympics 10 pupils, 3 members of staff and 2 Parent Council Members from Innellan Primary School travelled to Port Glasgow to see part of the Olympic Torch Relay. A very exciting time was had by all as we stood patiently waiting for the historic torch to pass us. Organisers in Port Glasgow did themselves proud by providing music, free flags and safe cordoned off clear viewing areas. Pupils and staff were delighted to also receive free Bank of Scotland Olympic ribbon flags. Rosneath Primary Celebratory Lunch

Rosneath Primary held a special celebratory lunch for the Jubilee on Thursday 7th June. Staff and pupils were served a delicious lunch of sandwiches, sausages, cup cakes and ice-cream prepared by Mrs Johnston and her kitchen staff.

As the weather was dull, lunch was served indoors in the school hall which was decorated with flags.Everyone enjoyed the celebration for the Jubilee.

A Diamond of a Party

On Wednesday 6th June Lochdonhead Primary School had a Street Party to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee which was absolutely amazing.  We invited people from the local community to come along and have some fun, with some tea and home baking on the side.  The pupils took on different responsibilities and worked co-operatively to make the day a huge success.  We want to thank everyone who came along and give a special thanks to Sir Lachlan MacLean for planting a tree in commemoration of the event.  We also want to thank the parents and staff for all their help.

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS AT PARKLANDS SCHOOL

Parklands School Secondary Class organised their own street party to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee! They invited people from the community who they wanted to thank such as ex-teaching staff and volunteers, representatives from RDA and invited guests from local shops and businesses.
The pupils planned the party and prepared all the food themselves – they even designed and sent out their own invitations. Luckily they had won £100 worth of vouchers and a Jubilee party pack from the Co-op so we were able to decorate our playground and celebrate in style! Eco fashion at Appin Primary

An Eco Fashion Show was held in Strath of Appin Primary organised by the school’s Eco Committee. 44 outfits were shown off by 15 models. All the models wore recycled clothes, donated by families and friends of the school. The school has had a focus on re-cycling as part of its Eco Schools programme this session.

JUBILEE LUNCH AT KILCREGGAN PRIMARY SCHOOL

What a beautiful day for a “Special Lunch”. Kilcreggan Primary School held it’s Jubilee Lunch outside today. The sun shone and everybody enjoyed a lovely buffet. Our thanks go to Mrs Reid and Mrs Stewart our Catering staff for preparing such a superb feast and decorating the the tables to make the day so special.

CAST & ‘Festival of the Seas’ Exhibition.

An exhibition was held recently in Oban’s Corran Halls celebrating the artwork and music created during the CAST project ‘Composition to Exhibition’. The project involved secondary art and music pupils from Islay, Tiree, Bute, Mull and Oban and the theme was tidal energy. . The exhibition featured fabric art, stained glass, printing and collage as well as original soundtracks from each school. The project was funded by Argyll & Bute Council and ‘Scotland’s Islands’. THE MAC SCARECROWS OF GLENSUNNYBOGLE

Primary 6, Dalintober Primary School, entertained P1 and P2 pupils with a performance starring the Mac Scarecrow puppets.
All the children in the class had written scripts based on the Mac Scarecrows. They peer assessed the scripts and decided which play should be performed. “The Mac Scarecrow Clan is Rich” was chosen and performed to great acclaim from their audiences.
The whole class were involved in some way and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

CHRISTIAN AID NETBALL TOURNAMENT

Rosneath Primary School were very excited to be taking part in this annual Tournament at the Lomond Sports Hall in Helensburgh. We played against teams from other Helensburgh and Peninsula schools. We were DELIGHTED that our little school won a Bronze medal. We played our hearts out and everyone is SO proud of us. Our joint Team Captains look so happy and the main point of the evening was that everyone had great fun meeting up together and cheering each other on. Kilcreggan Primary Fun Day

On Saturday 12th May our Parents’ Association held a Fun Day in the School grounds. We had games, stalls and a visit from the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Unit from Faslane together with our local Fire Brigade. There were teas & cakes in the School Hall and a great afternoon of fun was had by all.

SCOTTISH EXTRAVAGANZA AT DALINTOBER

Primary 5 at Dalintober have recently completed an Interdisciplinary topic about Scotland ‘s landscape. The subject was introduced through Chocolate Geography which used various bars of chocolate to show how the world is made up out of 3 types of rock. The idea we used was supplied by The National Parks, Loch Lomond. We investigated the three main areas in Scotland by using websites, games and videos. We used Google Maps to find places in Scotland and marked them on a large map along with some pictures. This formed a quiz for other pupils.
