SCOTTISH EXTRAVAGANZA AT DALINTOBER

Primary 5 at Dalintober have recently completed an Interdisciplinary topic about Scotland ‘s landscape. The subject was introduced through Chocolate Geography which used various bars of chocolate to show how the world is made up out of 3 types of rock. The idea we used was supplied by The National Parks, Loch Lomond. We investigated the three main areas in Scotland by using websites, games and videos. We used Google Maps to find places in Scotland and marked them on a large map along with some pictures. This formed a quiz for other pupils. We used photographs of the local area taken from a microlight.

In art we looked at different Scottish landscape artists including William McTaggart and the Scottish Colourists using books provided by a local artist. We created various scenes from around Scotland using oil pastels, collage and tissue. The class made projects at home and they were presented in many different ways including booklets, photographs, models and displays which we thought was most enjoyable.

To finish our Scottish topic, the class held a Scottish Extravaganza to which we invited our family and friends. The class planned and hosted the occasion at which we showed our guests our singing, dancing and chanter skills. Our guests joined in enthusiastically with Scottish dancing and this was followed by Scottish baking which we thought was delicious and a well deserved cup of tea. To end the Scottish Extravaganza we showed our parents our art work and projects.

  1. I like the sound of geology by chocolate. Can you tell me what kinds of chocolate were used for the different rocks types? I’d like to try the idea too.

  2. Dear Mrs Watson,

If you go to the Loch Lomond National Parks site you can print out their Chocolate Geography sheet
( http://www.national parks.gov.uk ). We ate all our experiments apart from the Curly Wurly bars which we had to heat by sitting on them!
