P3a, P3b and P3/2 visit the National Museum of Scotland

We visited the Museum in Edinburgh last Thursday as part of our Romans topic. We learned about what a Roman soldier wore and the names he gave to his weapons. Did you know that the Romans wanted their horses to look good in battle so they gave them necklaces and decorated harnesses?

We also enjoyed looking at and handling artefacts including an oil lamp, maille (an armoured shirt), sandals and knucklebones (a Roman game).

We are now looking forward to the visit from the Roman soldier and our Roman Feast (both on Wednesday 24th February). Our teachers would like us to bring a pillowcase (white if possible) into school by Monday 22nd February. We will use the pillowcases to make togas.

Some photos of our trip……… more to follow……….

Chinese New Year in P3

Happy Chinese New Year!

Primary 3 have been enjoying learning about the story of Chinese New Year and discovering why the years are named after animals – ask us to share our learning at home!  We also watched a video that showed how children and their families might celebrate Chinese New Year, and enjoyed watching a dragon parade and learning about traditional celebrations.

Primary 3b then used lucky colours to design a Chinese New Year poster.  We had to include a picture to show it is the year of the monkey and some of us had a try at drawing a Chinese style monkey.  We listened to traditional Chinese music while we worked, and some of us described the music as “beautiful” – it was very relaxing and helped us work.

P3/2 learning and achievement

A huge well done to all of the P3/2 pupils who recieved certificates in assembly today.

Our achievement certificates were presented to Lucas, Finn, Eilidh and Heidi. Our Scots Poetry certificates were awarded to Josh, Arran and Sara.

This week we have been very busy exploring and investigating man made and natural materials in our school environment. We visited the nursery playground as an outdoor learning experience and found lots of examples of each.

We enjoyed learning about the customs and traditions of the Islam festival of Eid  and created lanterns, cards and hand art as part of our learning. We can’t wait to display our beautiful work in our new classroom!

Primary 3 Scottish Poetry Winners

Our seven class competition winners did us proud this morning at the school poetry competition.  They were confident, spoke loud and clear and we heard and saw some super expression and actions from all of them!  Miss Robertson, Mrs Stephen, Mrs Mayhew and Mrs Cameron and all of Primary 3 thought they did an excellent job at representing us in front of the P1-3 classes and teachers and our special competition judges.

Well done Ben, Lucy E, Morgan, Lucy L, Hamza, Andrew and Josh!

Primary 3 Update

Greetings from Primary 3a and 3b!

We have had a busy week as usual and have lots of news to share.

The Numeracy team have been in Williamston this week, and we were lucky enough to have some time with them in class.  We showed off our Maths skills and have been learning new strategies to help us with mental arithmetic.  We are learning to be more efficient when answering a Maths question and are able to share our strategies with the rest of the class.  We are trying to remember that the best strategy to use involves the least number of steps to get to the answer.  In topic Maths, we have been learning about numbers from the past and have designed a product that uses Mayan, Babylonian, Greek, Arabic or Egyptian number systems.  Our calculators, remote controls, clocks, phones etc were colourful and exciting and we had great fun adding our chosen symbols to represent numbers.  This has been preparing us for learning about Roman numerals next week.  We will be exploring numerals and using them in maths work and have been asked to bring a cardboard tube into school to turn into a Roman scroll.

On Monday afternoons, we have been taking part in dance classes with a visiting teacher.  Amy has been bringing out our inner divas, and we have been strutting our stuff around the big hall.  We are dancing to “Happy” to promote our Growth Mindset attitude.

Our teachers were very proud of us all for doing such a good job reciting our Scottish Poems!  We have all had the chance to present our poem to the rest of the class and here are the top three who will perform at tomorrow’s School poetry competition

3a…………… Hamza Khan, Andrew Farquhar and Lucy Livie

3b……………Lucy Egan, Morgan Gess and Ben Brady

Well done, we all wish you the best of luck!

We started our new Science and RME topics this week.  In Science we are identifying what objects are made from in our Materials topic.  We used the “Box of Mysteries” to select objects, and then decided what we thought they were made from.  In RME, we are beginning our Islam topic and revised our knowledge of the Mosque this week.  We discussed the inside and outside of a Mosque.

Equality Assembly in P3b

We had been working very hard in Primary 3b since returning from the holidays to get our assembly together, and successfully presented all of our learning on Friday’s assembly for Primary 1-3 and Parents and Carers who came to watch.

Our assembly was on the Value of the month for January which is Equality, and we spent time in class discussing what this meant and how we could tell everybody else about it.

We sang songs, read the story of Rosa Parks who fought for Equality, read an equality poem and told everybody about the inequality some children still experience around the world in a video we made.  Mr Brice also helped us make a video about sharing smarties to see if Williamston pupils (and staff!) could share equally with each other.

We had lots of fun doing our assembly for our audience and Miss Robertson is very proud of how hard we have worked and how wonderfully we presented the assembly for everyone.

Bonne Année and Welcome back from P3/2, P2 and P2/1.

We are all glad to be back to see our friends and ready for a new term.

We enjoyed sharing our holiday news and listening to others.

We are looking forward to setting our targets for the New Year next week. What do you think would be a good target to help you with your learning?

We are really excited about PE this term. Mr Muldoon will be taking each of our classes on a Thursday. P2/1 and P2 will also have gym on a Monday. Are P2 remembering to come dressed in their PE kit on Monday morning? We will be in the hall at 9 o’clock! P3/2 will have gym on a Tuesday.

Library days, this term, will be Tuesday for P3/2 and P2. P2/1 will be going on Fridays.

Homework will begin again next week. Spelling and handwriting will be sent home on a Monday. Please make sure it is completed and returned by Friday. Reading homework will be Monday and Tuesday for P3/2. P2 will have it on Tuesday and Wednesday. P2/1 will be Tuesday and Thursday.

Remember to look back at your maths homework sheet for ideas to practise adding and taking away sums and counting to 100. Mr Minute asked if you have been reading o’clock, quarter past and half past times on your clocks at home? Do you have analogue or digital clocks?
