P6/7 Burst into a new term

P6/7 have been busy during the first week back after Easter. We have started our new Interdisciplinary block on “The Species of the world”  where we will be looking at classifying and learning new species. We also participated in our class KNEX challenge where we had to build a wheelbarrow that would transport a book over 5 metres. We worked collaboratively in groups to see who will move forward to the next stage of the competition.

We have started a numeracy block on fractions and are also looking at angles  in maths. During literacy we have been discussing figurative language and discovering these in texts we experience. We have discovered similes and metaphors in music and our class novels so far – but are still on the hunt for examples.

Abby – We started to read a book that we chose before the Easter holidays The book I am reading is called Time travelling with  a hamster and we had to read 5 chapters for our literacy circle! I was the ARTFUL ARTIST!!!

Jowita-In maths we did angles and improper  fractions and equivalent fractions.

Wiktoria –  In P.E we did javelin we had to throw for accuracy and get  it in the stationary hula hoop.We then challenged ourselves and Mr.Cox provided a moving target.

Matthew-In maths we learned about angles by watching a powerpoint called the Angles family. We learned about acute, right, obtuse, straight and reflex angles.

Alice – In P.E we did discus throwing at a hula hoop trying to get it in the hoop.

Katie-In maths I learned how to simplify fractions.

Kai- In P:E we where throwing javelins and discus to each other.

Earth Day 2017

Today was Earth Day, which coincided with our Eco Action Day, and the sun shone for us! What a busy, productive day!! With the help of many parents and family, we managed to:

  • create 4 raised beds ready to plant vegetables
  • fix the bug hotel
  • re-varnish the bird feeder and fill it with food
  • create a willow tunnel
  • tidy the courtyard and use the masses of moss from the floor to fill out the bug hotel
  • clean, paint and plant up the tyres in the garden
  • create a vertical pallet garden
  • renovate one of the benches (done by Barry in advance and brought back to the garden today)

Pretty impressive!! And the additional success moment today was opening the door to the brick outhouse which has been nailed shut for over a decade! We had lots of ideas as to what we might find inside…and what we found was a table tennis table, pool table and lots of posters.

We also received many plants and compost, donated by South Logie nursery – many thanks to them!

In return for all their hard work, our volunteers were treated to a plate of home-made stories, lovingly made by Mrs Grant, who also made sure there was plenty of tea and coffee for our team of workers.

And whilst the adults worked away and improving our school grounds, the children helped or played and had a lot of fun.

A huge thanks to all who came along, and especially to Louise Reid who played a key role in organising the day. It really was a super, community day that has had an already massive impact on the grounds. I very much look forward to our next Eco Action day!

The Scholastic Book Fair has arrived!

We have displays packed full of exciting books for sale. Please come in and browse, or send in orders via the form that was sent home this week. For every book sold, the school will receive credits that will be transformed into books for use in school.

Thanks to Lesley for helping the children with their design, and to Alec Cheer from New College Lanarkshire who digitised the image ready for us to use.

P1/2 last week

In reading, we focused on the Jack and the Beanstalk story, answering comprehension questions and describing the characters using wow words. We also used props to act out the story with a partner and used yellow split peas to make something from the story – one of the characters, settings and even the beanstalk.

In maths, some of us have been learning our two times table. Others have been using ten frames to support their understanding of addition. Some of us have been developing our understanding of subtraction and others have been counting in 10s.

In language, some of us have been matching words with pictures to help our decoding and blending skills. We had to read the three sounds in the word and work to blend them together to read the word.

In health we have been learning all about medicines and how to stay safe around them. We focused this week on some do’s and don’ts of medicines including who to take medicines from.

In writing, we have been continuing our dinosaur adventure stories to get them ready for the West Lothian Young Writer competition.

By Josh, Ruby, Henry, Adam, Connor, Kaila and Ciara.
