p1/2 – last week!

Some of the p1s listened to a description of a dinosaur adventure and had to draw what they had picture in their mind. Next week, we are going to use our pictures as a plan for writing about a dinosaur adventure.

We read the Gruffalo’s child with our new puppets and p1s had to write about our favourite part of the story giving a reason why and p2s had to sort some words in adjectives, nouns and verbs.

In PE we were learning about how to catch rugby balls.

In topic we were measuring the length of different dinosaurs in the playground and found out that different dinosaurs were different sizes.

In topic we also designed our own dinosaurs using our knowledge of how big real dinosaurs were and using our imagination to name our dinosaur. Our dinosaurs were called Gruffalosaurus, Pettyssaurus, Weirdosaurus, Spikeosaurus, Brownosaurus, Bad Rex and Everysaurus.

In maths some of the p1s were using there adding skills to buy toys from Miss Bredin’s toyshop. We need to do this so we know how much money to give the shopkeeper when we are buying things.

P2s have been learning about tens and units in maths. They had to look at a number and use cubes to work out how many tens and how many units in a number.

Our week in p1/2

As always we have had a very busy week. Here is what the boyus and girls hvae remembered learning.

We have been learning about what the land looked like when dinosaurs were around and with a partner we created a picture of this land using different materials – pencil, pen, paint and different papers. Lewis

In art, we have been making dinosaur skeletons from art straws. Maris

In maths some of us were using the Ipads to practise adding numbers together. We were trying to get as many right as we could. Kaila

Others have been using computers to add to 20 or 10. Ruby

Some of us have been learning about how we would keep ourselves safe if we went on a dinosaur adventure. We had to decide what to pack in our backpacks. Next week in writing, we are going to go on our dinosaur adventure and write all about it. Adam

In writing, some of us made our own pancakes and had to write instructions to do this. Kaila

We have also been learning to write sentences which make sense by filling in the missing word. Callum

Today, for world book day we have been finding Wally’s around the school and playground as a house competition. Tom

This morning, we read The Gruffalo together because it is Miss Bredin’s favourite book. We did 4 activities to do with the Gruffalo story:

  1. We acted out the story using our new Gruffal puppets. Oliver
  2. We drew our favourite part of the story. Christopher
  3. We completed a true and false quiz about the story with a group. Stephen
  4. We worked as a group to describe the Gruffalo and the mouse. Luca

We are looking forward to sharing our favourite book with others this afternoon.

P1/2 turned palaeontologists

We had a great afternoon on Wednesday exploring fossils and the work of palaeontologists. It was a very active classroom with lots of discussion about fossils, how they could be extracted from the ground and the work of palaeontologists.

Our first activity involved removing chocolate chips from a cookie using only a cocktails stick – lots of care and concentration needed here!

Our second task involved putting back together the bones of various animals using an internet game.

img_0088

In our third task we had to use plastic spoons and toothbrushes to excavate dinosaurs from the sand.

img_0089 img_0093

Our fourth and final learning task was to make our own dinosaur fossil using salt dough and dinosaur models.

Last week in primary 1/2

In topic, we used Ipads to draw our own Island and then moved a cat around the island by giving it directions. We also used sticks and stones to design a new island, working in a group to complete this challenge. We also used the construction materials to create an island – we used blocks to make houses and we put some trees on our island. Finally, on a large sheet of paper we drew a large map and each group added different places to complete our Island. Josh, Kaila, Brodie and Oliver.

The following day we directed people to different places on our large map – we had to take our shoes off and stand on the map we had drawn! Maris (photos to follow!)

In PE we started learning a new sport – tennis. We were with a partner and we had to hit the shuttlecock with our racket to our partner. Findlay

We went through to the nursery to perform ‘We’re gangin on a bear hunt’ to the afternoon children. Elyse

In writing we wrote instructions for crossing the road safely. You have to look and listen for cars, if something is coming you have to wait for it to go past so it is safe to cross. Stephen

In French we were learning numbers outside – we had to race against a partner to find the number Ms Ferguson said. Callum

Another busy week in P1/2

We were very busy last week preparing for our Scottish night as well as all our other learning. Here is some of what we have been learning.

We read Katie Morag and the Tiresome Ted story and in writing we re-wrote the story and thought about how the the teddy felt at different points, writing them in speech bubbles. Findlay

We were drawing pictures of the Bear Hunt story with a partner ready for the Scottish show next Monday. Maris

We wrote a letter to Katie Morag telling her our name, our age, where we live, what we like doing and we asked her a question about Struay. Josh

We were learning about Road Safety. If you are cycling about on the road you have to wear a jacket that you can be seen with, it would be yellow. Brodie

We were practising our handwriting in the sand trays last week. We were practising i, a and d. Callum

In maths we were all doing different things:

I was taking away in 100. Josh

I was taking away in 10. Brodie

I was adding numbers up to 7. Maris

I was adding two groups together with gems. Connor

I was taking away in 20. Erin

Check back in next week to find out how our final Scottish night preparations have been going!

Learning in p1/2

We have been very busy in p1/2 since returning after Christmas and are settling back in to our routines in class. Here is a little snapshot of what we have been learning.

In PE we were learning how to play badminton. We had to throw the shuttlecock over the net for our partner to try and hit with their racket. Findlay

We were also playing a game called ‘tidy the bedroom’ to practice throwing the shuttlecock over the net. Callum

We have started our new topic on Katie Morag and worked together to make a map of the Isle of Struay with the castle, the post office, the lighthouse, the loch, the forest, the school and Grannie Island’s house marked on it. Kaila

At mental maths we were adding low numbers and learning our doubles using a song. Adam

We then used our understanding of adding low numbers to work out sums with bigger numbers like 100 + 100 and 1000 + 1000 and even 1 million + 1 million! Oliver

Some of our class have joined a group called the Sharks and they have different jobs to do in this group – drink monitor, lay the table, tidy the table and wash the dishes. Leah

In maths we were making quizzes with tricky take away or adding questions and we swapped quizzes with someone else in our group and had to circle the correct answers. Brodie

Another busy week in p1/2

We have been looking after some stick insects in our classroom and we all got the change to hold them. Oliver thought they were very soft to hold but Christopher thought they were tickly.

In maths we sorted a packet of sweets using colours and organised each colour into straight lines so we could compare them. Callum sorted the yellow sweets and that was the longest line. We worked together in small groups to make a pictogram of our bug hunt results and Maris noticed that we found the most woodlice. We also used a computer game to show the results of our bug hunt which Findlay enjoyed.

In number we have been using our large ten frame to show numbers to 10 using our bodies and to help with subtraction.

We worked in small groups to sequence the life cycle of different minibeasts (ladybird, butterfly, honey bee and ant). Brodie thinks his group worked well together so everyone got a turn.

During outdoor learning with Ms Ferguson we were clearing the nursery garden of weeds ready to plant some new flowers.

In art, we created snail pictures using collage in the style of Henri Matisse. Kaila enjoyed making her snail pictures.

Minibeast hunt

We spent the afternoon with a Ranger from Beecraigs to enhance our learning in our Minibeasts topic. We began the afternoon in the classroom telling him everything we had already learned and then headed outside to see what minibeasts we could find in the playground. We had a great afternoon sharing our learning with the ranger and were very excited to be able to take a closer look at the minibeasts we found by collecting them in little tubs with magnifying glasses attached.

Finding somewhere dark to release our minibeasts at the end of the afternoon

Another busy week in p1/2

We started our topic of minibeasts this week and have used it as a context for learning across much of the curriculum.

Brodie enjoyed hunting for minibeasts in the playground in the rain on Tuesday. He particularly liked the green caterpillar he found.

In maths  we have been learning about symmetry and Stephen enjoyed painting a symmetrical butterfly. Findlay enjoyed using a laptop game to match symmetrical shapes and Ciara enjoyed using the 2d shapes to create a symmetrical butterfly (see photos below).

We read ‘The bad tempered ladybird’ and then wrote our own stories about a bad tempered minibeast and thought about what another creature could say to make the minibeast happy. Kaila enjoyed writing her story about a grumpy spider who ended up happy because a butterfly said it could share her bugs.

In number, P2s have been practicing counting forwards and backwards to solve addition and subtraction problems and Elyse has enjoyed this. P1s have been learning how to write numbers up to 5 and practcing counting using active activities and laptop games.
