Primary 3/4 Blog Week Beginning 29th January 2018

Dear All

This week in literacy we learned when to use proper nouns. We learned the soft ‘g’, ‘ee’ and ‘ea’ spelling words. We started reading ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ which is about a Viking. We designed badges about Vikings. We described the main character ‘Hiccup’ and drew a picture of him. We researched Vikings on the netbook and typed the facts up and wrote in our literacy jotters.

In French we learned how to say different fruits using High Five French. We found out that the French say “I have an apple red instead of a red apple”.

In numeracy we used ‘Freddie’s pocket’ to practice counting money subtraction on a number line. We played number games on the smartboard.

In health and wellbeing we learned about Growth Mindset and did our assembly on it. Hope you enjoyed it!

In learning across the curriculum we had Piper Tommy in to play the bagpipes as we have been learning about Scottish crafts and music. He played The Flower of Scotland, The Skye Boat song and the Flight of the Bumble Bee. He showed us how the bagpipes worked. It was loud and he played them very fast. He was wearing the Couper tartan kilt and a hat. It was green and purple. He wore a sporran on his kilt. He had a traditional Scottish knife in his long green sock. He had holes in his shoes as the original shoes were like Roman sandals to let water out. In music we played instruments to Katie Bairdie and we recorded it. We learned rhythms in NYCOS using a rhyming song. In Science we learned where we would find water and made plants representing worlds.

Hope you have a good weekend!

Primary 6B – 2nd Feb 2018

As a new month starts, our learning continues.

This week we have consolidated our learning around negative numbers and the children have completed a pre-topic assessment for money and finance, which we will begin to explore next week.

In literacy, the children have used Scot’s language to rewrite either part of the script from The Lion King or a scene from The Broons. They had great fun using Scot’s Dictionaries to discover some new words. Ask them which new words they have discovered!!

We have also written an imaginative story, with our main focus being the way sentences are started. We have learned that sometimes we need to restructure the sentence in order to open it with an interesting word. Ask your child which sentence openers they used this week!!

We have continued our preparations for The Lion King show, rehearsing and singing.

Have a lovely weekend

P2/3 time travelling!

This week we started our new topic; we are time travellers, travelling back in time to look at how Scottish inventors have shaped our lives today. We learnt about John Logie Baird, inventor of the television. It took John a long time to get his invention right, he made lots of mistakes but he never gave up. We think he was very resilient! We even had a go at inventing our own televisions, Miss Prince was very impressed by our creativity and imagination. Some of our ideas were: a television we can step inside and become the characters, televisions that can predict the future and 3D televisions that make us feel we are really there.
In Maths we started learning about money. We reminded ourselves of all of the coin values and we started work on adding amounts and giving change.
In Literacy we have all been working hard to meet our personal targets. We are really enjoying reading our brand new reading books and learning lots about the features of non fiction books.
Finally, in Health and Wellbeing we learnt about our emotions and how we can express our emotions through our faces and body language. Here our some photos of us exploring the different emotions:

Have a great weekend!

It wasn’t requested for this week but great to see the enthusiasm for our new interdisciplinary learning on the Vikings. We have a Viking coming in to visit on Thursday 8th March!

Piper

We have a piper coming in on Thursday at 11am. (Thank you Mrs Couper) The children can wear something tartan if they have it.

Assembly

As advised previously, assembly is this Friday. Children should wear their school uniform as usual.

Tuesday learning

Primary 2 have been busy practising their tricky words. We were confident at reading them but found the spelling challenging. We showed great resilience and didn’t give up. We tried to take a photograph of the words with our eyes so we could picture it when we tried to write it.

In Maths we were learning how to give change. We used number lines and Numicon to calculate how much change we needed to give our partner. We then worked in groups to find 5 different ways to make an amount.

We were all VERY excited today as Miss Mudd launched our new topic. We will be learning about the Victorians! We worked with Miss Mudd to plan our topic and talked about what we already know and what we wanted to learn. We started to learn about Queen Victoria and the Royal family. Our buddies then came down during ICT time and helped us do some research. We went on the BBC History website and had to try and find 3 facts about Victorians.

Rugby

Just a quick note to let everyone know that there will be NO rugby after school club this term. I will start the club up again after Easter when the weather improves and we are able to get back outside.

Thanks

The Great P2 Pet Sale

We have been reading ‘The Great Pet Sale’ as we have been learning about money. In P2A we had our very own pet sale. We brought in our favourite pets and created a poster to try and sell them. We then worked in pairs to create a shopping list to show what we wanted to buy. We were given £4 to spend at the sale.

CA and MK worked behind the till and had to calculate the change needed…..a very tricky job!

Physical Literacy

Primary 2A have been learning about punctuation. We went on a punctuation hunt around the school and outdoor environment. Look at how many we found! We looked at full stops and realised they are just dots. We went on a dot hunt. The primary 2 students even room control of the photography and used our new class iPad to photograph our evidence.

We found a question mark….

And an exclamation mark….

We the practised walking out sentences and dropped our beanbag where we thought the full stop should go. We worked in partners to practise this.

We even started using connectives in our sentences!

It is great to get outside to do our learning

Springfield’s Netball stars!

On Monday the Primary 7 netball girls took part in their first ever cluster netball tournament.  For their first tournament , the girls played well together as a team and showed a lot of potential.  They managed to win one game out of the three that they played. They are currently third in the league, with a few more tournaments to go, the girls still have plenty of time to shine!

Mrs Matos and Miss Harrison could not have been more proud of the girls’, positive attitude and team work. All the netball girls played with enthusiasm and commitment. Well done girls!!

Watch this space…. Netball stars in training!!
