Miss Baillie x

Our Week at Springfield and Bonnytoun.

This week we held our very successful upper-school careers’ fayre. A host of professions and businesses were represented to inspire our young people towards different career options. Thank you to all businesses and individuals who took time to come along and make this possible. We’ve worked ready hard on our Skills for Learning, Life and Work programme over the past two sessions and this event showcased the culmination of our efforts. Thank you to Mr Logan for his help with this.

Primary 1A and Miss Harrison held a great assembly about the history of transport yesterday. We saw lots of images of old fashioned methods of transport including the Penny Farthing bicycle. Well done to our little primary one children who all spoke, sang and danced so confidently.

Here are some achievements from this week:

Well done to EC in Primary 2 for bringing along her wonderful model of Charlie and the Chocolate factory with the help of her classmate E. Great work! I liked the sweeties! 😉

Also, well done to C in P5 for his swimming award!

Here is N who is representing her class to hold Peggy Bear. P3 got the most pegs this week for walking around school quietly and hence, received Peggy.

Enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend everyone in the lovely sunshine. See you all next week for a short week in school and nursery!

Take care.

Miss Baillie xx🌞💖

Weekly News P7a

Well what a busy few weeks !

Lion King – I couldn’t be prouder of each and every one of the children for the hard work they put into the Lion King. We had a great photo session last Monday in full costume and make up. Our dress rehearsals came with a few problems, but by showtime everything went very smoothly. We have had fantastic feedback from parents, carers, friends and staff; you should all be very proud. The children had a great party last Friday to celebrate.

Literacy – We started a Lion King mind map last week and then started to write the recount this week. The aim is to reflect on the process from start to finish and write about what we enjoyed and what we would do differently. I’m looking forward to reading each individual opinion.

We finished watching Wonder last week, and I managed to not cry…we had a great discussion afterwards about what was different in the book and the film and why. This week the children started writing a comparative essay.

Numeracy – Our focus moved to multiplication this week and use of the formal algorithm (or written method). All children worked really hard and were able to move onto long multiplication where they multiplied 2,3 or 4 digits by 2 digits.

WWII – We had 2 guests this week to tell us all about the War at Sea. My Auntie Linda Darroch talked to the children on Tuesday about the First Air Raid of WWII which took place in the Firth of Forth. The target of the attack was the HMS Hood which was in Rosyth Dockyards for a refit, however it was the HMS Southampton which was hit and the ship that my Grandfather (now 100) who was a Royal Marine was on. Linda told us all about Primary and Secondary sources of information and the story of this historic event. Then on Thursday Sandy Boiling came in to talk about the story behind the sinking of the HMS Hood and the Bismarck. The children were fascinated with this presentation, and Sandy brought with him copies newspapers from the day to show how the media portrayed such events. We were very lucky to have such interesting speakers.

Spanish – In Spanish this week we learned about “La comida” food. We did some role play exercises of ordering food in a restaurant and had to use our knowledge of French and English to help us match up Spanish and English food items.

PE – We have lots of opportunities for sport this term. We started tag rugby last week, which is going very well apart from all the injuries…On Tuesday some of the children took part in Golf sessions at Kingsfield, which they loved. SD was the P7a star golfer! Well done S. Mr Logan also continued his athletics work and was pleased with the progress the children are making.

Happy long weekend from Mrs Gordon.

Primary 2B’s Indian Adventure

This week we’ve had a whirlwind trip to India. We’ve found out about  the Indian flag, map of India, capital city of India, food, clothes, famous landmarks, rangoli patterns, mehndi designs and clay pots to put candles in. The children have really enjoyed it.

We also had a visit from Mrs.Martin who talked about her home country of Russia. It was lively with lots of photos and artefacts. Thank you very much Mrs.Martin. St.Petersburg looks fantastic.

In Numeracy, we have started to work on multiplication. We’ve talked about groups of items and repeated addition and are progressing on to the 2x table. Any practice at home would be appreciated. Some of the children are confusing the x symbol with the + symbol. We will continue with this next week.

The children have produced some brilliant leaflets on Linlithgow and the surrounding area, as well as posters.

Photos to follow. Have a lovely long weekend.

P1B Create a Garden Centre and Work Hard to be Global Citizens

This week we continued our life cycle topic.  As we have caterpillars in the classroom we looked at the lifecycle of a butterfly.  The children were very good at showing their understanding on their whiteboards, they also talked to a ‘chatty partner’ about the stages of the life cycle that they had drawn.  Then we made paper chain caterpillars like the one in ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ story.

We have also been thinking about being ‘Global Citizens’ this week.  We decided that it is up to all of us to do our bit to look after our lovely planet.  Mrs Kennedy put lots of different objects into a recycling bag and we used it as a ‘Talking Bag’ this is when we use the objects to help our discussion, we touch, explore and look at them to help us to begin our conversations and get some ideas.  We also had the story ‘George Saves the World by Lunchtime.’  In the book George helps his Grandad to save the world using the 4 R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle and repair.  We then wrote down our own messages to others on how they can help to look after the environment.

On Friday, we began to turn our role play area into a garden centre.  There were six committees and they all worked hard doing different jobs. You can see the committees below. There was a Sign Making Committee too but there doesn’t seem to be a photograph of them, they did an excellent job and Mrs Kennedy is about to set it up using all the work that the children produced.

We have had quite a few children with successes outside of school this week.  G got a certificate from Crazy Golf, K was in a rugby tournament and F won the Golden Boot at his football training.  C was also awarded this large trophy in her Judo class.  Well done to all of you!

Have a lovely long weekend, see you all on Wednesday, from P1B and Mrs Kennedy

4.5.18 Primary 5A

This week in P5A, we have started our literacy circle activities. We were well prepared and able to take on the different roles. The directors made very good teachers, leading the groups. To help with our reading and research we focused on identifying the main idea.  At writing, having looked at different samples of text we were able to workout where the new paragraphs come. This will help when writing stories.

In number we have continued  to find fractions of amounts and use real life examples. This makes much more sense to us now.  We have been finding perimeters of shapes with Mrs Gordon and doing more number talks. She loves our strategies.

As part of our expressive arts and IDL we are comparing a classical artist, Edwin Landseer’s ” The Monarch of the Glen”  (1851), with modern Scottish artist, Scott Naismith’s different beach scenes.

We painted our own version of Scottish mountains from photographs and then positioned a stag in the foreground. Next week we will use pastels to create beach scenes.

At science we discussed light and shadows and whether materials were translucent, opaque or transparent. We took part in different activities which involved making shadows smaller, larger and from different angles. We revisited how a solar eclipse occurs from our Space topic in term 1.

For IDL we studied the different landscapes in Scotland and also studied map symbols. We looked at the  universal colour code and then designed our own ordnance  survey symbols.

What great matches we had at basketball this week. The passing was super and there was great dribbling and shooting. Mr Logan said the class worked really well during his football lesson.

P5B Week Commencing 30th April 2018

In Maths we have been learning how to identify a basic fraction and determine what fraction of a shape has been chosen. We then used this knowledge to help us to recognise and be able to find equivalent fractions and also to simplify fractions.  When simplifying a fraction we have to remember to keep going with our answer until it can’t be simplified any further.  On Wednesday with Mrs Hogg we started work on volume and were learning to understand the connection between litres and millilitres. On Friday we challenged ourselves by taking part in BIG Maths and the Multiplication quiz of the week.

In Literacy we have been looking at using our VCOP strategies to up-level our writing and also how to correctly use paragraphs to help us sequence our writing to make it easier for the reader to understand.

In Reading we have been continuing with our Literacy Circle Groups and are enjoying taking part in the different roles that make up the circle. We are all enjoying discussing our books, asking questions and sharing ideas about the book we are reading.

In art we have been looking at the work of some famous Scottish Landscape artists and have started work on producing a landscape painting of our own. We have begun by splitting the picture into different sections and looking at the way light and shade makes up the image and can affect the colours that we will use.

In PE we have been working on our fitness levels by taking part in different activities at each fitness station e.g. skipping, sit ups, bench jumps etc.

In French we have been revising what we know about colours, weather and the different greetings that can be used when speaking to people.

In Science we continued with our work on light sources and have also been looking at how shadows are formed.

P1A’s Class Assembly Week

This week our new sounds were ‘ou’ and ‘ow’. When learning the ‘ou’ sound, we wrote ‘ou’ words in clouds, made ‘ou’ words with play dough, played ‘Mouse in the House’ on Education City and completed an ‘ou’ spelling activity. We also wrote ‘ou’ sentences in our literacy jotters. When learning the ‘ow’ sound, we made ‘ow’ words in hoops, wrote ‘ow’ words in cows, practised writing ‘ow’ words and sentences on our whiteboards, played an ‘ow’ words pairs game and played Roll and Read.

In Numeracy and Maths this week we have been continuing to learn our subtraction facts to 10. We looked at subtracting 1 and 2 from a number and we learned subtraction facts involving 0. We completed subtraction sums on trains, used our subtraction facts to colour a fish, practised subtraction sums on our whiteboards, completed subtraction to 10 sums on subtraction cards, played ‘Rabbit Takeaway’ and worked on our subtraction workbooks.

On Thursday, we continued to look at using 1p, 2p and 5p coins to buy items. We ordered coins according to their value, used coins to buy items in a shop, played ‘Ice Cream’ on Education City, sorted coins and completed a coin addition activity in our money workbooks.

This week we looked at the story ‘George Saves The World By Lunchtime’ as part of our Global Citizenship focus. Miss Hardie read us the story and we discussed ways that George saved the world such as recycling, travelling by bike, saving electricity and re-using materials. We looked at different objects in our talking tub and talked about how these different objects helped to save the world. Finally, we looked at writing to convey ideas and messages and we wrote statements about how we could save the world.

On Friday we had our class assembly. It was on transport and journeys. We told our audience all about transport from the past, our trip to Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway and we reflected on our P1 journey so far. Everyone was incredibly proud of us. We spoke clearly to the audience, our behaviour was fantastic and we sang our song beautifully. Thank you to everyone who came to support us today.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely long weekend!

P1A, Miss Harrison and Miss Hardie 🙂

P3/4 Blog WE 4.5.18

In literacy this week we learned to proof read and rewrote a story about a farm. We corrected capital letters, commas, exclamation marks, full stops, speech marks and spelling. We learned to write words with the silent ‘c’ like science. We added more detail to discussion writing we had written on whether we should use as much as 75% of land for farming. We did a spelling test on ‘ai’, ‘air’ and ‘ea’ words.

In numeracy we learned how to set out formal division with brackets. We used our times tables to write out our multiplication and division in a line with the division in brackets.

In health and wellbeing, in PE we did relay races to work as a team and improve our fitness. We did circuits including mini tennis to keep our heart warm. We also played King of the Ring to keep our ball within the lines. We also walked a mile.

In learning across the curriculum we did science with Mrs Begarnie. We learned about electricity and we made circuits with lightbulbs, buzzers, wires, propellers and motors. We learned that electricity can flow in a circle or parallel. We designed electric models and made sure the circuits worked. We wrote facts about electricity and words about electricity like electrons, component, circuit and pylons.

Charlie from P7’s mum brought in a tractor, a lamb and chickens. They were free range chickens and had a wander round! The lamb was fluffy and cute. It was one month old. The tractor was a red Massey. It was massive. The wheels were very big. Charlie who is a farmer did a farming presentation with James from P7 who is also a farmer. They told us about breeds of sheep and cows, buffalo and deer. They told us about what produce came from different animals. We learned about sheepdogs and different commands they could be given so they knew what to do .After that we chose an animal and wrote details about what they looked like, where they lived, what they produced, what they ate and a funny fact.

We went to our committees. In pupil council we are organising a Disney dress down day. In JRSO we are designing a banner for being safer around school and parent’s letter to organise a Park and Stride. In sports we were making cards to say thank you. In health and wellbeing we were designing a cyber bullying poster. In digital leaders we were looking at using mobiles effectively and safely.

Have a good weekend!

Joined up success in P2/3

After all the excitement of our class assembly last week we have had a calm and settled week in P2/3.

We decided to recycle our Blue Attenborough boat and create a boat trip role play area, we have a ticket office where you can buy your boat tickets, and a desert island to land on!

In Maths we have been using our knowledge of the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables to solve word problems. We are  very good at taking our time to read the questions and try out different strategies. We are resilient! We love playing buzz to practise our time tables.

In handwriting this term we are learning how to do joined up writing. We absolutely love the challenge of learning a new join and trying it out in our sentence writing.

Our IDL this term is Making Our Community Greener. We already have prior knowledge of the devastating effect plastic is having on the oceans, now we are going to dig deeper and look at how we can reduce, reuse, recycle in Linlithgow. Fun fact, did you know it can take up to 5 years for a banana skin to decompose?!

Class talk information sheets were handed out yesterday, every child has been given a date for their class talk, any questions drop me a dojo.

Have a great long weekend,

Love P2/3 and Miss Prince x
