Mapping It Out in P1A

This week we have been revising some of our digraphs. We revised the ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘th’ and ‘wh’ digraphs. We made ‘ch’ with play dough, used shells to make ‘sh’, played Roll and Read for ‘th’ and made ‘wh’ with play dough. We also unscrambled sentences and wrote our own sentences containing these digraphs. Finally, we played games on Education City to revise these sounds.

For writing this week, we wrote ‘thank you’ letters to Doctor Steve. We revised the features of a letter and wrote letters to convey a message. We were able to include an address, the date, a greeting and a closing farewell. We told Doctor Steve what we liked about his visit and he really enjoyed reading our letters.

In Numeracy and Maths this week, we have been learning how to use a number line to help us to solve our subtraction facts. We were confident with using this strategy to accurately solve subtraction sums to 5. This week we also used our subtraction skills to take away with coins and give change from values to 10p. Next week we will begin to look at linking our addition and subtraction facts.

This week we have been continuing with our People Who Help Us and Local Area learning focus. We have been using our observing and recording skills to draw and create different people who help us for our classroom display. We worked really well in our groups and we were able to take turns, build on each other’s strengths and share resources. On Thursday, we looked at mapping. We spoke about who might use a map and why we use maps with our learning partner. We then worked with a partner to make a map of our classroom. We were able to include all of the main features of our classroom on our maps. We will be continuing to look at mapping next week.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely, sunny weekend!

WWII

What a wonderful week of Class Talks. We had a few technical issues so 3 will be finished next week, but well done to everyone so far. The quality was fantastic and ranged from talks on spies and SOE’s to family recounts. A true privilege to hear them all. We also had some fantastic Morrison and Anderson shelters as you can see below. The effort again was tremendous. Well done everyone.

Numeracy

We started our revision of weight and measure this week, converting from grams to kilograms, kg to tonnes and vice versa. we also did some word problems with weight and looked at the difference of mass and weight and how much we would weigh on different planets due to gravity.

Literacy

This week we looked at imagery and figurative language to try and help us up level our writing. In groups we looked at our group novel and found examples of imagery and figurative language. We found that some authors are better than others at using this to help us visualise. We also peer and self assessed our Lion King recounts which were excellent.

5A week ending 25.5.18

We have had a great week listening to our class talks. They have ranged from baking to biking to riding. The standard of the talks was excellent with us struggling to give some people a next step. We will finish the final 5 next week.

In literacy circle we are really enjoying our novels, with only 2 people not rating their book 8/10 or above. Everyone really participated fully , well done.

In maths, we continued with decimal numbers and making links to our environment. We are going to continue doing mental fractions work for the next few weeks, as some of us still don’t feel we could give ourselves a green yet.

There was great excitement when Mrs Hutton came to ask us who we would like to have as a buddy in the current Primary 1. She will do her best to pair us but some of the P1 pupils were chosen at least 20 times! We will really need to set a good example as we are getting to meet up with them when P7 go to camp.

In art, we looked at the modern artists, Allison Young and Scott Naismith and how they used colour in their beach scenes. We had a lot of fun trying this with pastels ( and mess).

 Modern Scottish art

We have been discussing Linlithgow Transition’s competition to ban plastic straws from the town and have been designing posters. We feel very strongly about this issue and want to help.

In science, we completed our topic on light by looking at rayleigh scattering. Please ask your child ” why is the sky blue?” .

Disney Dress Down Day

What a wonderful collection of Disney Costumes today, have a look below! Many thanks to everyone for taking part. We raised a total of £252 which will go towards school funds and purchase of some expressive arts equipment for next year.

P3/4 Blog WB 25.5.18

In literacy this week we did a reading comprehension on our story books. We answered questions in sentences in our own words to show that we understood our reading. We also did a farming comprehension. We researched the process of Farm to Fork and went onto the Tesco and Asda websites which had lots of information, videos and games.  We played a game to match up the produce with the animal or plant.

In numeracy we learned about the order of fractions and which were the biggest and smallest.  We did formal fractions in our numeracy jotters.

In health and wellbeing, in PE we played  basketball and walked a mile a day. We also had a race across the pitch and back and did relay races with batons.

In learning across the curriculum we wrote what we want to know and what we have learned so far about farming.  With Mrs Lawrie we used crayons to draw a picture of a sunflower in a pot based on a picture by Vincent Van Gogh. The P4’s went to committees and organised improvements and events for the school. The P3’s went to P2/3 and sang songs. One of the events organised was a Disney Dress down and it was fun.

Have a good weekend!

P2/3 class talks round 2, measuring and Peggy Bear!

We rounded off our class talks this week with talks on everyone from Tim Peake to Gene Simmons! The standard has been so high, every child spoke confidently, made eye contact with the audience and showed great enthusiasm for their chosen hero. A big well done to all!

In Maths this week we started work on measure, focusing on length. We began by comparing the length of natural resources outside. Then we went on to measure with a metre stick and ruler. We found estimating tricky but we showed resilience and kept on trying. Some of us had a go at converting between cm and mm.

In Literacy we have been working on magic e and past tense verbs. We can identify verbs in a sentence and change a present tense verb to a past tense verb. For example; I am riding my bike. I rode my bike.

In Science we began work on  the senses. This week we learnt about taste, we learnt about the parts of the mouth we use to taste. We enjoyed tasting a variety of flavours…some more than others!

During our laptop time we worked on our typing skills. We played on Dance Mat Typing. The class really enjoyed this and whizzed through level one. This is a great free resource you can play at home too!

We have brought back the Daily Mile this term, running for an increased amount of time each day. Next week we will be working towards running for a full 15 minutes without stopping! We are learning to pace ourselves, not doing the ‘caveman’ run (the children will explain!) In Futsal we worked on our shooting skills. We are getting better at controlling the ball.

This week we have had the pleasure of having Peggy Bear. We won Peggy Bear by walking quietly around school.

Thank you for reading our blog, have a great weekend!

P6A weekly blog.

Another busy week, filled with fun and learning.

Literacy:  We just couldn’t resist watching a short clip of the Royal wedding, the wedding created a lot of discussions and comparisons to previous royal weddings and weddings that we have attended before. We all turned into budding journalists during Literacy and we planned and wrote a newspaper report for our local paper, using formative language to let our community know all about the royal wedding. We concentrated on the layout of our newspaper, made sure we used a bold and catching headline, and we made sure that we use interesting openers and vocabulary throughout our writing to make sure that we grabbed our readers attention and kept them engaged.

Numeracy: Fractions, fractions, fractions. We have continued with fractions this week and have been consolidating our learning of converting, comparing and ordering fractions. We’ve begun practicing our measuring skills, and have discussed the different times that we would use measure and why and we discussed the importance of using the correct unit of measure and how to measure accurately. Can you guess the length of our school pitch? We went outside and measured the length of our pitch , we discussed different ways that we could measure the length and which would be more sufficient. This activity will help us a little later during IDL when we have to imagine  or understand how far 50 meters on a map will represent.

IDL: We are continuing to learn about our local area, we used different resources such as maps and books to help us to compare how Linlithgow has changed and developed over the years. We have really enjoyed learning about how Linlithgow has changed, and we found some old pictures of Springfield Primary school.

1+2:  In Spanish this week, we learnt some words for the different school stationary that we use in the classroom, and we learnt vocabulary for different classroom instructions .

PE: We have been taking  advantage of the good weather. This week we took our PE outside and improved our skills in rounders. It is always good fun to play a competitive team sport, but without realising it, we are developing our hand and eye co-ordination, speed, accuracy, team building skills, and so much more.

Science: Science this week was some what…..gross!! We learnt all about the digestive system, from start to finish, Ms. Crombie and Mrs. Matos showed us a demonstration of the digestive system, please ask us to explain what we have learnt, although ‘gross’ at times, it was all very fun and interesting.

NSPCC: NSPCC came along and spoke to us about who we can talk to when we feel we are being bullied or mistreated. We discussed different types of abuse and how we can identify these. We also shared who we can talk to or contact if we need any help.

British Champions in Orienteering

We are delighted to announce that two of our amazing pupils have recently been named as British champions in orienteering within their age groups. Amazing work from both R and J Hammond! What a talented family! We are so very proud!

This week we have been learning…

In literacy we have been learning how to write a formal letter and play script [EC].

Mrs. Campbell came to teach us French words related to farming.  She also taught us an  animal song in French.  Thank you Mrs. Campbell for sharing your expertise with us!

In Numeracy we have been doing fractions and most of us get it completely and we’ve only been doing it for 4 days.  We loved doing our plays and  we are performing them next week.

WW2

As part of our WW2 focus this week we looked at rationing. The children who did not go to the Triathlon were able to prepare, cook and taste some WW2 recipes. We made Trench Stew (corned beef stew) and Eggless sponge (tea loaf). The children easily remembered the 4 C’s of food safety whilst in the kitchen (cleaning, cooking, chilling and cross-contamination) and learning/improved their techniques for peeling, chopping, measuring, mixing and cooking. Despite a lack of ingredients during the war, we agreed that these recipes were surprisingly tasty.

Numeracy

This week saw us visit the last of the 4 operations for another in depth look – division. We started by revising the formal algorithm or written method and then moved onto long division of 3 and 4 digit numbers by a 2 digit number. We used 3 different methods to allow the children to find one that worked for them. We also went outside on Wednesday which was National Numeracy Day, and did our calculations in groups with chalk outside. This really helped us to consolidate our learning.

Literacy

We finished our Lion King Recount and Wonder Comparison writing this week. All children had to peer and self assess the Lion King recounts. It was lovely for Mrs Gordon to see the development in the children’s writing ability since their first recount back in September. Most children are now regularly using paragraphs and correct sentence structure and grammar.
