Numeracy and Mathematics

We have been learning about weight and measure this week, firstly using the comparative size of familiar objects to make reasonable estimations, check these using an appropriate measuring device, read scales accurately and record our results in the correct unit. As we extended our knowledge of weight, we linked this learning to rationing during World War II by researching the amount that each person would have been allocated of specific items per week in ounces (oz). Ounces (oz), pounds (lbs) and stones are examples of imperial units of measure which would have been used in this era, which contrasts to the metric system of measurement used more regularly nowadays, e.g. grams (g) and kilograms (kg). Once we found out how much of each item was rationed, we used formulae to convert these amounts using decimal notation from ounces to grams by multiplying by 28.3, and then from grams to kilograms by dividing by 1,000. This allowed us to consolidate our knowledge of place value as we moved the decimal point three places left.

Literacy and English

Now that we have finished reading The Boy In the Striped Pajamas, our group text, we have been studying it in more detail to further extend our comprehension and understanding whilst developing our reading skills and strategies. We began by discussing the most prevalent themes throughout the story, coming up with some excellent suggestions such as the loss of innocence, friendship, relationships and family, division, good vs. evil, abuse of power, leadership, religion, war and conflict. From this we analysed a chosen theme in greater detail by examining where this was explored in the text. This week we accessed the story through an ebook to vary the way in which we interpret information. We were also introduced to the notion of cause and effect; the cause being why a key event occurs in the story and the effect being how this impacts upon characters and triggers other events as a result. This is often referred to as the ‘butterfly effect’. When reading various statements, we distinguished between fact and opinion before providing our own examples of these. Hitler expressed a number of strong opinions during World War II, but there was no evidence to suggest these were true or factual. Finally, we tackled a range of questions based on the text and word processed our responses within our reading group’s Yammer page. This opened up some interesting dialogue between the class to promote further discussion and debate.

Health and Wellbeing

The second workshop of our tobacco education delivered by Michelle from West Lothian’s Drug and Alcohol Service took place on Monday. We further explored the damaging effects that smoking can have on our bodies and were able to witness this first-hand. Through our research, we found that chemicals such as butane are found in cigarettes. Butane is flammable and also found in petrol, and is created as a bi-product of smoking to ensure a cigarette stays lit. ‘Smokey Sue’ was setup in the front playground with a test tube of water to replicate the moisture in our lungs before smoking one cigarette. We were shocked to see that the water was turned yellow as a result, and a build-up of tar could be found on the glass. Michelle also posed us with various ‘tempting situations’ and we were asked to move to the left if we were not tempted to smoke, or to the right if we were tempted to smoke. The idea of peer pressure was mentioned, and the children assessed the impact that risk-taking behaviour such as this could have on their health.

Have a relaxing weekend everyone! P7b, make sure you rest and recuperate before school camp next week! No late nights!

Primary 3 – week beg. 28th May

This week has been another busy week in Primary 3! We have just finished learning about different subtraction strategies and finished this topic by using the strategies we have learned to solve different word problems. Throughout the next few weeks we will be focusing on multiplication, revising what we have done so far and learning some more of the times tables. Please keep working on these at home.

Our Literacy this week focussed on writing an imaginative story which had to include a problem for the character and a resolution. The pupils did a great job achieving this while remembering to include capital letters, full stops and joined up writing. When completing comprehension questions this week we worked in small groups and shared answers together. This helped create some great discussion about our story.

We had great fun outside this week creating our own art work using natural materials. The pupils had been learning about the artist Andy Goldsworthy and decided to try and create their own pieces using materials they found outside. Next week we plan to use these pieces of art to create line drawings.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs McVay & Primary 3

Super slime in Primary 2

In Literacy this week we were writing character descriptions. We worked in groups to draw a familiar character then had to fill the inside of the character with words to describe their personality. Around the outside we wrote adjectives to describe their appearance. We then shared these with the class and discussed our ideas. We then created our own characters for our Fantasy stories.

In Numeracy we continued our learning on division. We practised sharing sweets between different amounts of people. We also used the Numicon to learn about the ‘grouping’ method and started to link this to our knowledge of multiplication. We started to apply our learning to real life problems. Miss Mudd needed some help with the seating plan for her wedding so we had to split the guests up equally onto different tables. We also used our problem solving mats to show all of the different strategies we can use to tackle a multiplication problem.

In IDL we were focusing on mapping and Atlas skills. We learnt how to use an Index and worked in pairs to complete an atlas scavenger hunt. Next week we will start to draw maps of our local area.

In ICT we were learning how to use the Paint programme.  We used it to draw out our story settings and characters that we had created. Our P6 buddies came to help us as it was a little bit tricky.

In Art we were learning about colour mixing. We were using different colours to create an African sunset and we enjoyed experimenting with the different shades and tones. We then cut our some animal silhouettes to bring it to life.

On Tuesday we made some slime for the class. Last week we had been learning about the i-e sound so this fit in perfectly. We have enjoyed playing with it in our free play time.

A big well done to N and E for their achievements at Gymnastics. We are very proud of you girls.

Home Learning WB 28.5.18

Hi

Hope you’re managing to enjoy some sunshine.

Please see link to this weeks home learning above.

Chilling have just to learn the first 2 columns ‘er’ and ‘est’ as they are longer words and an activity.

Some children found fractions tricky so they are practising again this week. Please reinforce that the number at the bottom is the number of people they are sharing with and the number is the number of objects e.g. pizzas.

If they find the one they choose too challenging or too easy they can choose another one.

Kind Regards

Louise

P7b Weekly Blog

Here’s what we’ve been up to in P7b this week…

Literacy and English

Our key focus this week has been our class talks, on an aspect of World War II that particularly interests us. We carefully selected and summarised our personal projects, contributing a number of relevant ideas, information and knowledge when engaging confidently with our audience. Our presentations were clear, expressive, organised and delivered in a logical order with an introduction, main part and conclusion. Cue cards and brief notes were used to prevent us from ‘reading’ our talk and we used signposts to give a basic structure. We are continuing to enhance our communication and ability to engage others through appropriate use of eye contact, body language, emphasis, pace and tone. The props and resources we used were thought-provoking, and we allowed opportunities for the audience to interact during our presentations. There was a marked improvement in our use of higher order questioning which promoted further discussion and interaction at the conclusion of our talks. Mr. Logan was blown away by the standard of our presentations, and was thrilled to see such a vast improvement in our confidence levels.

Numeracy and Mathematics

We have been continuing to investigate the order of operations, using the BODMAS acronym to remind ourselves of this. Having consolidated our learning of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), we are now applying this learning further when tackling varied expressions and equations. We have introduced how brackets can change the emphasis when carrying out calculations and have demonstrated our understanding of this concept through verbalising our ways of thinking and strategies utilised. Next week we will continue to work on this with Mrs. Doran whilst beginning to study weight and measure with Mr. Logan.

Health and Wellbeing

On Monday we welcomed Michelle into class from West Lothian’s Drug and Alcohol Service. She is their Young People’s Tobacco Prevention Worker and discussed the negative impacts that smoking and tobacco can have on our health. We shared some of our prior knowledge on the subject and were given the opportunity to further develop our understanding of this topic. P7b were shocked by the facts, statistics and information she shared in our first workshop but understand the impact that these substances can have on our health. We have a greater knowledge of the ways that culture, the media and peer groups can influence our own decisions and risk-taking behaviour, and we are learning to manage this. Did you know there are 4,000-5,000 chemicals and toxins in a single cigarette? And, smoking 20 cigarettes per day costs people around £3,000 per year? As a result, we have all pledged to give up one thing we can’t live without for a week and replace it with a healthy alternative. We will report back to Michelle with our progress next Monday. Will the Xboxes, PS4s, sweets and fizzy juice make way for outdoor play, water and fruit? We shall see…

Next Week

  • 28.5.18 – P7 Leavers Trip EE2 forms sent home, return by 1.6.18
  • 28.5.18 – Tobacco Education workshop (2)
  • 29.5.18 – No golf sessions next week, last session to be rearranged
  • 29.5.18 – Parent Council AGM
  • 31.5.18 – Minikickers for P2-3, P7 Sports Leaders required 3.15-4.00pm
  • 1.6.18 – All medication for school camp to be handed to school office

Wishing you all a relaxing and restful weekend!

Springfield and Bonnytoun News…

We held a highly successful STEM curriculum evening this week which Mrs Tulloch expertly ran. Thank you to all families who came out to learn about our approach to STEM at Springfield and Bonnytoun. The marble challenge proved a big hit with families competing against each other to make the fastest run!

Did you know that STEM starts in our nursery through our block play and use of loose parts? We are proud of our approach to block play and this week worked with the authority to hold a successfully training session on the benefits of this type of play in early childhood development. We had early years practitioners attending from both council run and private nurseries.

Here are some of our nursery children engaging in block play and drawing their designs.

P2A and Miss Mudd worked hard to deliver a lovely Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed assembly this morning. We loved seeing the children all dressed up and performing their lines with confidence!

Here are the achievements for this week:

Well done to M and G in P1 for coming along with the products of their free play. M made a knight’s outfit and G made a super model. Free play and allowing children to express themselves in early years is part of our Play Strategy which Mrs Kennedy has helped to lead all year. Thank you Mrs Kennedy for your efforts.

Have a happy weekend!

Love Miss Baillie x💫

Practise makes perfect! P1B

We have been busy preparing and practising for our assembly this week, this included each of us being filmed – we love watching the video of ourselves! We are really looking forward to performing next week and are going to try hard to have big, loud voices, and to speak clearly.  Please keep practising words at home.

In maths we have been working on subtraction word problems, we played with skittles as they are a fun way of talking about subtraction.  ” There were 10 skittles to start with, I knocked down 6 and there are 4 skittles still standing.”  It is also a good way to see the link between addition and subtraction.

We have been writing about what makes us happy.  We have been discussing how we look and feel when we are happy and how it makes others around us feel too.  We also learned that when we feel sad it is good to know the things that make us happy so we can try some to cheer ourselves up.

We have continued to ‘walk a mile’ on quite a few days.  A mile is five times around our school pitch.  The fresh air is good and as well as getting  exercise it also helps us to concentrate better when we get back to class.

As always, Mrs Kennedy has seen lots of learning through play in P1B.  We have been architects and engineers, artists and designers too.

The nursery children continue to visit us each week as part of their transition into p1.  We are very good at showing them around, playing with them and setting a good example of how to listen and tidy up!  Mrs Kennedy is delighted at how the P1 children have looked after the nursery children and they are passing on a lot of their learning too, well done!

Have a lovely sunny weekend.

P1B and Mrs Kennedy

Primary 2B

We have been continuing with division this week and the children have really enjoyed learning about sharing.

“The Creakers – our class novel was finished this week, much to the childrens’ disappointment. We have all loved it and have enjoyed doing some work on it. This has included summarising the story, visualising the Woleb ( ask your children to explain), character descriptions and drawings of the characters.

The children starting on “Dance Mat Typing” which will help with their keyboard skills.

There was great excitement today when the children dressed up as Disney characters – some super costumes.

Enjoy the sunshine this weekend.

P5B – Week commencing 21st May 2018

This week we have been busy presenting our Class talks to our peers and receiving feedback. The talks have covered a wide range of subjects and have been very informative and very interesting.  We have all been learning about everyone’s fascinating hobbies and interests which have just been amazing!  It is clear that everyone has put in a lot of hard work and effort in preparing their talks and thought about the different props or equipment they could bring in to support them and engage with the audience.

In Reading we are continuing to work in our Literacy Circles and take part in the different roles to discuss our books and question each other about what we think about the story and the author.

In ICT we have been setting up our new Glow Accounts and changing our passwords so that we are able to access them. We sent test emails to one another and had a quick look at the Scratch programme that we will be using to start basic computer programming.

In Art we have entered the “Linlithgow Last Straw “competition and have been designing “eye catching” posters to promote the campaign to encourage everyone to take part.  We have also been looking at the work of Scottish Landscape artists and have completed our paintings showing some of the different features that make up the landscape of Bonnie Scotland!

To day we also took part in the “Disney Character” dress down day – the outfits and costumes were amazing!  Well done to everyone for being so creative and making it such a fun time!
