Week ending 8.6.18 5A

This week we have tried to get outdoors to work as much as possible. It was great doing literacy circle and comprehension outside in the shade. Long may it continue. Some groups have finished their novels this week and have loved the endings.

We are about to write up our Big Adventure Hero stories . We have devised our own superheroes and their capabilities and we wrote some diary extracts about what they got up to. I’m looking forward to reading about their adventures.

After discussing the eatwell guide it has led us into a discussion about making healthy food choices and this will continue into health week on Monday.

In science, we investigated how sound travels and the mediums it moves through. We made different pitches with wood, rubber bands and cardboard, working out how to make note higher and lower. We will review this next week and plan out how to make a tuned guitar as our final STEM project.

In maths, we continued sorting information and making digital graphs online. We then looked at temperatures for October on a database and did the whole process from start to finish. We completed it by asking relevant questions.

We will be measuring outside next week.

We practised our French vocabulary about La Famille and we exchanged Spanish greetings.

Marvellous Maps

In Literacy this week we have been revising magic ā€˜eā€™. We made magic wands and turned our vowels from short sounds into long sounds. We played magic e board games, became magic e detectives and played magic e bingo.

We finished our class novel ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. We were looking back at the description of the different rooms in the factory. We created a map of the factory and labelled it then we invented our own room. Here are a few of our ideasā€¦..

  • The Invisible Chocolate Coin room ā€“ when you eat the coins you turn invisible.
  • The Gold Chocolate Bunny room ā€“ there is a field of edible grass with gold chocolate bunnies that you can eat.
  • The Bouncy Bubble room –
  • The Chocolate Mine room ā€“ you go in here to mine for chocolate with a pick axe. There are chunks of fudge in the walls too. The chocolate all gets sent to a furnace and melted down into the chocolate river.

Well done to N and Z for making a treasure hunt for the whole class last Friday. They showed our value of kindness by hiding little presents for all of the class. The class loved trying to find them and were very grateful. They even made us some maps to help us find the hidden treasure.

Well done to E and K for their achievements out of school. E ran a beach race and brought his medal in to show us. K won a trophy at football.

In IDL we were learning all about maps this week. We practised drawing objects from an aerial (birdā€™s eye view). We discussed the reasons we use maps and looked at all different types of map. We then went outside and drew sketch maps of the school grounds. We had to try and label the different classrooms which was very tricky. We then used our computer time to explore Google Maps. We tried to find our houses and took a little tour of Linlithgow. We also started to learn about Japan. We made some Japanese fans and had a go at origami. We also learnt how to count to 10 in Japanese.

Ā

In Maths we finished up our work on division. We started to learn about measure. We practised using rulers and meter sticks. We used measuring tapes to measure our bodies and even used a trundle wheel to measure our playground. We started to learn about converting cm to m.

Ā Ā

It is Fitness Week next week so we are looking forward to getting our sports clothes on and getting active. There is a fitness week homework grid with some suggested activities you may like to try at home.

Have a lovely weekend,

P3/4 Blog WE 8.6.18

In literacy this week we learned plurals and words ending in ā€˜sā€™ or ā€˜esā€™. We played comprehension games after our reading. We learned about contractions which are when two words join together to make one word e.g. ā€˜he hasā€™ changes to ā€˜heā€™sā€™.

In numeracy we did ā€˜Big Maths Beat Thatā€™ and revised division and times tables with Mrs Doran. We also counted numbers back and forward in French.

In health and wellbeing, in PE with Mrs Reid we did athletics including shotput and running.

In learning across the curriculum we cut and pasted the process of farm to fork of bread and strawberries to show the order starting from the farm to eating them.

Have a good weekend!

Creating our own stories in P1A!

This week we have been revising the digraphs ā€˜ighā€™, ā€˜-yā€™, ā€˜oaā€™ and ā€˜owā€™. We used our sounds to write words to match pictures, created ā€˜ighā€™ and ā€˜-yā€™ words using light bulbs, used magnifying glasses to spot ā€˜ighā€™ and ā€˜-yā€™ words, played Roll and Read, played ā€˜oaā€™ and ā€˜owā€™ bingo and played ā€˜oaā€™ and ā€˜owā€™ Snakes and Ladders. We also played games to revise our digraphs on our Promethean board and wrote sentences containing our sounds in our literacy jotters. This week we have continued to revise our common words. We used our magnetic letters to make common words, played a common words Snakes and Ladders and played a common words game on our IPad.

For writing this week we created our own stories which included our meerkats, Sergei or Bogdan and Mr Fluff. Miss Harrison read us ā€˜Castle Adventureā€™ and we discussed the adventure Gran took in the story. Then we looked at photographs of Sergeiā€™s adventures in our local area. He went to Linlithgow Palace, Igloo, Tesco, the Union Canal, Linlithgow Leisure Centre and Taste! With our learning partner, we talked about what adventures Sergei might have in each setting. We invented our own story and took our chosen character on an adventure in our local area. We worked really hard on our stories and Miss Harrison and Miss Hardie loved reading all the stories!

In Maths and Numeracy this week we were learning ā€˜one less thanā€™ and ā€˜two less thanā€™, as well as revising subtracting all or none to 10. We played ā€˜Two Less Thanā€™ on our Promethean board, worked out ā€˜one less thanā€™ or ā€˜two less thanā€™ on whiteboards, completed a space themed subtraction activity sheet and completed a subtraction page in our subtraction workbook.

On Thursday we also finished our money topic. We revised coin recognition and looked at using our coins to buy items and work out what change we would get. We played coin throw with hoops to practise our addition and subtraction skills, we used coins to buy items in a shop and get change, played ā€˜Coin Gameā€™ on our Promethean board and completed a coin addition and subtraction activity in our money workbooks.

This week we have been learning about people who help us at school. We looked at who the different people that help us at school are and talked about some of their roles and responsibilities. We learned about teachers, pupil support workers, cooks, playground supervisors, office people, lollipop people, janitors and cleaners. With our learning partners, we selected someone who helps us at school and we used actions, gestures and movement to act out their responsibilities. The rest of the class had to guess who we were acting out!

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend!

Maps and Buddies

Maps and buddies

Each week we are grateful for the time that Ian gives us when he comes in to help. He shared a riddle with us today: A group of Polish people were flying from Russia to the USA when the plane crashed on the border of France and Belgium. Where were the survivors buried?

Class Talks- We have now finished all the amazing class talks. Well done to everyone for all their hard work.

We have written letters to our buddies to welcome them to school and to reassure them that we will be there to help them as they start P1.

We are continuing to practice our fractions ā€“ simplifying and converting from mixed numbers to improper fractions. Some of us are beginning to convert fractions to decimals.

We used our measurements of the playground to make a scale map where 1 cm represented 2 m.

In among our learning there are some events coming up:

Friday is Movie day – We will be watching both nights of The Lion King performance in different classrooms and we will be able to choose which DVD to watch.

Springfieldā€™s Got Talent- This week we have been preparing for Springfieldā€™s Got Talent. The auditions are next Thursday and the final is in the last week of term.

Visit to St Michaelā€™s church and the book festival – We are looking forward to this visit on Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday the band have their performance in Livingston. All the best to K, A and G!

Sports Day ā€“ Weā€™ve been practicing for the races and hope itā€™s dry on Wednesday.

The answer to the riddle : Survivors donā€™t need to be buried anywhere!

Do you have a bike at home that you no longer use and would be willing to donate to the school?

A Ā£10 voucher for use at the West Lothian Bike Library will be offered to the first 10 bikes brought in between 8.30 and 8.45am on Monday 11th or Tuesday 12th June.Ā You can use this to get any other bikes you own repaired or serviced at the Bike Library or to buy one of their refurbished bikes which start from Ā£30, to replace the one that has been donated to the school.Ā Ā The bikes will be used for a rent a bike scheme. This will be at an affordable price for everyone because we think everyone should have the chance to ride a bike. The West Lothian Bike Library will take these bikes away, assess their suitability for refurbishment / repair, and then return any repaired bikes to the school for future use by the school. Any bikes that cannot be repaired will be stripped for parts and used in the Bike Library’s general work.

P5B Tuesdays with Mrs Hogg

Tuesdays with Mrs Hogg

We have been very busy on our Tuesdays with Mrs Hogg with literacy, numeracy, physical education and French. We are looking forward to next Tuesday at the book festival and have been enthusiastic about the book ‘Ruby McCracken: Tragic without Magic’.

Numeracy and Maths

Our focus in Maths has been measure and we have been working on volume of liquids which involved estimations, converting units of measurement, fractions of different volumes and some fun experiments. We have also worked on measure in millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres. We have considered units of measurement, measuring tools and we have converted fractions and decimals of various measurements. This week we were fortunate enough with the weather to measure in the playground using chalk, timers, metre sticks and trundle wheels. We marked out areas of different measurements then calculated the speed in which we could run round these. After this we estimated how long it would take to run various longer distances.

Literacy

We have been exploring the use of Oxford Big Writing Adventures; we have been studying aspects of grammar and writing techniques including alliteration, ambitious vocabulary, similes and metaphors. We created a bank of expanded noun phrases which we then used in our Superhero themed diary writing. This week we explored and compared the features of newspaper, magazine and comic articles. We look forward to finding out more so we are prepared to write our own.

In reading we are enjoying the class novel ‘Ruby McCracken: Tragic without Magic’. We are taking it in turns to read aloud to peers. We have been using our summarising skills to give recounts on each chapter. The book festival is next Tuesday, which is expected to be an interesting trip for us. Ā

French

We learned conversational French and held introductory conversations with peers. It has been interesting to find out more about numbers, colours, months and days of the week in French. We are encouraged to practise our conversational French regularly in, around and out of the classroom.

Physical Education

In P.E we have focussed on fitness activities and stations. We even had a turn of designing and delivering our own short fitness lessons, this included a warm up, stretch, main activity and cool down.

Celebrating Success

We are very lucky to have such talented pupils in P5B; pupils regularly tell us about/bring in their achievements from out of school whether that is sewing designs, dance shows, arts and crafts, brownie badges, trophies or medals.Ā  Well done to Sam, Katie C, Isla and Cameron for your fantastic Triathlon achievement, and to Tyler for his football success. Good luck to Katie, Katie and Una in their upcoming dance show this weekend. Iā€™d like to say a huge well done to everyone in primary five, what a skilled bunch!

Kind wishes,

Mrs Hogg

P6A weekly update!

It’s been another fun filled week in Primary 6.

Literacy:Ā  We have continued to develop our comprehension skills, we are learning to use a range of different strategies to help us understand a text. We are looking very forward to being buddies to the P1 learners next term. We have been drafting and editingĀ  our friendly letters to our buddies. We have been paying special attention to our spelling, grammar and punctuation in our letters. Next week Tuesday we will be going along to the Linlithgow book festival to meet the author of our class novel, The fox girl and the white gazelle. The novel that we have been reading has been very engaging, as it is based in Glasgow and it refers to real life situations, we have all been very engaged and had a lot of discussions based on what has been happening to the two main characters and we have been comparing their lives to our own. Continuing with figure of speech, this week we have focused on Hyperbole and how we can use it in our writing.

Numeracy: We have been continuing to furtherĀ develop our understanding of fractions, we have been comparing and simplifying fractions. We have used the Singapore Bar modeling method to help us to understand and calculate a fraction of an amount.

PE: This week in PE we have been developing our athletic skills, We have been improving our running and sprint techniques. We have also been learning the correct technique for a relay race, we got a little competitive during our PE when we had a few relay races.

1+2: For 1+2 this week, we practiced and learnt some new French vocabulary and phrases, we are all brushing up on our language skills just in time for our fast approaching summer holidays.

IDL: We have continued with map work this week. Using the netbooks we have researched different map symbols for the Ordnance Survey mapping.Ā  In preparation of our tour of st Michael’s church on Tuesday, we used the netbooks to do some research of the history of the church, and we had a look at different pictures that showed the design and art of the church.

Expressive arts: Continuing with our Linlithgow focus, we completed our Linlithgow sketches, we completed our sketches by either adding paint, chalk, pastel or pen to bring our art to life. Our pictures represent what Linlithgow means to us.

Wishing for good weather next week, Tuesday we will be attending the Linlithgow book festival and having a tour of St Michael’s church. Wednesday is sports day. Another busy week planned for next week.

Maps and muscles

Maps and muscles

This weekā€™s riddle: This is four, never five, sometimes nine.

This week we have been learning about maps and how to read them so on Wednesday, Mr. Paton (Grace Patonā€™s dad) came in to talk to us. We took notes and then did a review on his visit. Weā€™ve chosen one review which was Evie Melvinā€™s: Mr. Paton came into class on Wednesday. He spoke to both P6B and P6A about his job. We found out that his job was designing and developing maps. He told us that maps are used everywhere, including Minecraft, road crashes, Hurricane Shelters, google earth and games. Many people use maps too. Like architects, coders, scientists and many more. We learnt a lot and would like to say a big thank you to Mr. Paton. Well done to Evie for that brilliant piece of work.

On Thursday we were so lucky to have M&M productions come to our school to perform The Secret Garden. They had great acting and singing skills and we thank them for coming with such short notice.

For class reading this week we have continued to read ā€˜The Fox Girl and the White Gazelleā€™ by Victoria Williamson and have really enjoyed reading the book so far and canā€™t wait to continue reading and to see her at the Book Festival on Tuesday 12th June. We are looking forward to it and also that day having a tour of St Michaelā€™s Church to look at some beautiful stained glass windows that will inspire some artwork. Please can the EE2s be returned as soon as possible and let us know if anyone is available to be a parent helper that day.

In Maths we are continuing with our learning about fractions and are also making detailed measurements of the playground prior to drawing accurate maps.

In Science, we researched information about our muscles and made models to show how our biceps and triceps work together as we move our arms.

We are enjoying getting to know our buddies more and are preparing to write letters to our buddies to welcome them into P1.

Again we have been outside as much as possible ā€“ walking and reading outside.

Answer to the riddle: There are four letters in This, five letters in Never and nine letters in Sometimes.

Home Learning WB 4.6.18

us-t-2548895-color-by-multiplication-and-division-activity-english-united-states

Hi, Hope you had a lovely weekend.

Please see link above for this weeks home learning. Children have been working on fractions and realise that they need to know how toĀ  multiply and divide to get quicker. This is a fun activity to help them to practise. They may need to look some of them up or swap the numbers round e.g if the question is 8 x 4, even if they don’t know their 8 times table, they can swap numbers to 4 x 8 which they should know.

Spelling this week is the other 2 columns from last week’s homework labelled P*s. This means plurals. Most words end in s or es when plural.

Thanks for all the creative spelling ideas. It’s great to see and inspires the other children. I m planning to make next week the last week of home learning. The following week is a short week with the Marches and then it’s the last week. What a fast year!

Kind Regards

Louise
