Pupil Achievements for this Week…

Another week of Springfield successes!

-Thank you to all of our P7 pupils, Mr Logan and Mrs Reid for organising and running a brilliant Sports Day on Wednesday.

-A special mention to Anna in P5 for being a ‘sporting hero’ and to Mrs Hutton too for leading our school Boccia Club for the whole of this year.  We continue to work hard to promote fairness and equity and to include all children in sport across school. We are so proud of you A! 💫⭐️

-Well done to all children who received a sports award (including A, mentioned above) at The Sports Personality of the Year Awards which we held in school yesterday. Congratulations to Sam in P7 for being recognised for his all round sporting excellence and good sportsmanship.

— A super effort from our Springfield children has resulted in ZP in P6 gaining first prize in the Transition Linlithgow ‘Reduce the use of Plastic Straws’ poster competition.  We also have the third place winner, MMc in P6 too! In addition, a number of childen had their work  commended.  See the photo below for all children who were successful in the competition. We will have a special visitor in school next week to present Z with her prize. More news to follow…

-H in P2 came along to see me this week after further success in gymnastics. Well done H!

-H in P2 wrote a brilliant acrostic poem this week about keeping healthy which tied in nicely with Fitness Week. Great work H!

Have a super weekend everyone! Remember that we have no school next Tuesday for Marches Day.

Pupil Voice Committees Assembly

We held out annual committees assembly today where our P4-7, ‘pupil voice’ groups fed back their work from this year to the wider school.

Our Pupil Council have held a variety of fundraisers to raise money to buy things for our school.

Our Rights, Respecting Schools Committee have worked to embed our Level 1 status and help us to move towards gaining Level 2 next session with a possible link with an international school being made.

Our Junior Road Safety Committee have worked hard this year to get less cars making the ‘school run’  and more children walking or cycling  to school instead.

Our Eco Committee have formed partnership links with Burgh Beautiful and the Transition Linlithgow project and have worked hard to garden, litter pick and encourage us all to reduce plastic waste.

Our Sports Commitee have helped to organise fitness week, promote sport across school and support staff to deliver P. E lessons.

Our Health and Wellbeing Committee have increased understanding of how to stay fit and active and how to promote positive mental health.

Our Digital Learning Commitee have supported the use of Education City and Sumdog across school and have recently piloted the use of ‘Scratch’ as a tool to teach coding.

We are delighted with the work that all of our children have led to improve all aspects of our school and thank our staff for supporting this.

Next session we aim to include our infants in committee groups. Watch this space for more news come next session…

Primary 6A’s Active Week.

Wow, what a busy and active week we have had. We have been learning about the importance of keeping our minds and bodies healthy. This week our school focus was Health fitness week, we took part in a variety of fun, healthy and active activities. A massive thank you to Mr. Logan who had organized such a fun and active week for us!

It was important this week that we took part in an active start every morning, this helped us to wake ourselves up, but aso to help our body and mind to get ready for our busy days ahead.  Each morning we started with a different active start to our day, to name just a few activities, we took part in some yoga and mindfulness, just dance, Kids fitness program and some 5 a day Spanish ( doing exercise and learning Spanish at the same time!). As the biggest craze at the moment is Fortnite we even managed to use all the Fortnite dancers for  part of our active start, this was great fun, but wow did we find it challenging and exhausting – even Mrs. Matos was struggling to keep up! Throughout the week we took part in different sport games such as rugby, handball and Gaelic football – this was a good opportunity to play together as a team, have fun and learn new skills too. One of our highlights of our healthy fitness week was having the opportunity to make and taste some fruit smoothies, mmmmm!! Let’s not forget our fantastic sports day on Wednesday, it has truly been a fun filled week.

Amongst all the fun, on Tuesday we took a walk to St Michael’s church, where we were given a tour of the church, our focus of the tour was to learn the history about the church and we had a closer look at the windows and the meaning behind some of the lovely art on the windows. After our tour we walked to the rugby club for the Linlithgow Book Festival, we had the opportunity to meet and listen to the author of our class novel, Fox Girl and the White Gazelle. We really enjoying our novel and some of us were lucky enough to purchase the novel for ourselves and had it signed by the author.

Over the last 30 weeks, some Primary 6 and Primary 7 children have been practicing with the company Limelight, they have been playing instruments and transforming into rock stars. On Tuesday the ‘rock band’ performed at Howden Park Centre, Mrs. Matos went a long to watch the performance and was blown away by the level of confidence and enthusiasm by all children involved, a massive well done to all involved.

Only two weeks to go before our summer holidays begin, what more is still in store for us?

                                                                 Gaelic Football

Book festival listening to Elizabeth Ezra.

We really enjoyed listening to Elizabeth Ezra talk about how she became a writer and she gave us good tips about how to write imaginatively.

P3/4 Blog WE 15.6.18

In literacy this week we learned more interesting words to use than, for example, nice, good and went.

In numeracy we have been learning about probability. We rolled a dice and kept a score of how many times it landed on each number. We worked out what the probability was for different groups in the class, for example, who had dark hair and blue eyes.

In health and wellbeing, we played potted sports including cheer leading, badminton, gymnastics, tennis, space hoppers, rugby, javelin, hurdles, egg and spoon, obstacle course, running, boules, cricket, threw bean bags and had races including the on Sports day. We played handball, golf, football, Gaelic football and had relay races. We had an active start every morning and practised yoga and mindfulness. We also made healthy smoothies.

In learning across the curriculum we learned more about farming from Springtime on the Farm.

Have a good weekend!

Fitness Week in P1A

What a busy Fitness Week we have had in P1A!

On Monday morning we had a golf session from The Stephen Gallacher Foundation. We learned how to hold the golf club correctly and practised swinging the club to hit the ball. We worked well together in our teams to get the ball into the target. On Tuesday morning we had a football session from Jordan. We played different games to practise our dribbling skills and then we had turns at trying to kick the ball into the net. We really enjoyed our golf and football sessions!

This week we were revising the digraphs ‘oi’ and ‘oy’. We looked for ‘oy’ words with magnifying glasses, made ‘oi’ words with play dough, wrote ‘oi’ and ‘oy’ sentences on our whiteboards, played games to revise our digraphs on Education City and practised writing ‘oi’ and ‘oy’ words to match pictures.

For writing this week we looked at writing instructions. Since it was Fitness Week, we focused on Food and Health and we wrote instructions on how to wash our hands. We watched a video about hand washing and we washed our own hands and discussed the main steps. Miss Harrison showed us how to use numbers to order our steps. Our instructions were very clear and easy to follow.

In Numeracy and Mathematics this week we learned subtraction facts for the number 6. We played Subtraction Smash and Subtraction Bowling, made our own subtraction facts for 6 on our whiteboards and played Subtraction Snakes and Ladders. We also completed an activity in our workbooks on subtraction facts for 6.

This week we also started to learn about fractions. We looked at sharing a pizza into halves and quarters and we talked about how the smaller parts had to be equal. We made pizzas with different toppings on each half, used our play dough to make the last half or quarter of cakes, found and coloured different fractions of shapes and played ‘Half Your Cake and Eat It’ on Education City.

As part of Fitness Week, we looked at the main food groups. We learned that the main food groups are Fruit and Vegetables, Carbohydrates, Protein, Milk and Dairy Products and Fats and Sugars. We looked at photographs of each food group and identified foods that belonged in each group. We played ‘Make a balanced plate’ where you had to put the food in the right food group, made our own healthy eating plates and drew pictures of our favourite food in each food group.

On Thursday this week we made smoothies. We had lots of ingredients to pick from such as pineapple, mango, blueberries, bananas, oranges, apples, raspberries and apple and orange juice. We picked the ingredients we wanted in our smoothies and then Miss Harrison blended them together. We got to try our smoothies and we thought that they were delicious!

The highlight of our week was Sports Day. We took part in Potted Sports in the morning and completed activities such as hurdles, javelin throw, space hoppers, football, running, cheerleading and an obstacle course. Then we had class races in the afternoon.  We showed excellent teamwork and we were also kind, resilient and respectful.

Thank you very much for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P2/3’s Health Week Diary

This week we have recorded what we have been up to every day in a diary. Here are some of our diary entries:

Monday:

This morning I did crocodile Cosmic Yoga and golf. At break time I had popcorn and a peach. I liked the popcorn because it was sweet and salted. The golf was hard because I kept missing the ball! In the afternoon we played toilet tig, I picked the game. On the computer I played a game called the healthy lunchbox game, it was very fun!

by IB.

Tuesday:

Today I did GoNoodle, hospital tig, terminator tig, football, yoga and the mile. I loved it! I want to do it all again!

by DG

Wednesday:

Today it was sports day and I hurt my eye on  a tennis ball. It was very stingy but I still did the races and I WON the running race! It felt amazing. Then we did the bean bag race and I came third.

Thursday:

Today we did yoga and the theme was Minecraft. We also did Springfield’s Got Talent. Me and Isabel did gymnastics, we got 12 points and the winners got 13 points. After that we made smoothies, they were yummy!

I am extremely proud of every single member of P2/3 this week; they have shown enthusiasm for all the new experiences on offer. Super to see so many confident performers in our talent show auditions too. Congratulations to EF, EH and OM who are going through to represent us in the Springfield’s Got Talent show!

Smoothies and Mindfulness P1B

After all the Sports Day activities yesterday, we took things a bit easier today!

We made smoothies this morning.  Our smoothie bar was very well stocked with lots of different kinds of fruit and fruit juices.  We made two different smoothies – we decided together what fruit we would like to put in each.  Most of us enjoyed drinking them 🙂 We definitely enjoyed mashing them all up in the blender.

We did some mindfulness breathing exercises today too, it was difficult to switch off and just think completely about our breathing but we gave it a good go.  We had some good discussion about why it is good to give your brain a rest sometimes and relax and we also thought about our breathing in different situations and how it can become quicker if we are scared or worried and how slowing our breathing down can help.

This afternoon we had some relaxing music on and we did some mindfulness colouring, it was very quiet in the classroom – the quietest it’s ever been I think!  A lovely thing to do.

What a busy week we’ve had, the children and I have really enjoyed thinking about our health and trying new things.
