Springfield and Bonnytoun News…

The second week of term has flown by with children enjoying their new classrooms and teachers.  Our assembly today was on the Well-being Indicator of ‘being safe’ and all children learned how to keep safe on roads, when out in public and when near fire, water and electricity. We also talked about keeping safe online.

School News:

We have been thinking about how to make homework consistent across school and also, so that it provides a more flexible home learning experience for children and families. Your child will now complete reading and spelling tasks weekly but will be given the whole term to complete a variety of other tasks. You will  receive home learning for this term, next week, and in an easy to follow grid format. We hope that you like it. Please give us your feedback as usual. In early years, it is really important that children are learning sounds and reading each evening if this is possible.

We will be launching a new school website in the next few weeks. Our blog will still stand and will feed into this, as will our Twitter account and school app. The website is a council requirement and it is designed to give an overview of our school as well as to provide links to documents and policies. We will give you more information on this when the website is ready to launch.

Here is a picture of some of our certificate winners from assembly today.

Get well soon to Victor our nursery guinea pig!  He has been staying at Mrs T’s house for the past couple of weeks as he has been poorly and has had many trips to the vet. 😢We hope that he is on the mend and back in nursery soon. Again, we will keep you posted of his progress. Thank you to Mrs T and her family for taking such good care of him.

Have a lovely weekend everyone,

Love,

Miss Baillie xx💫💖

P3B – Superheros!

Hello, another packed week in P3B.

In literacy, the children had reading on Monday, they began to read the books they were taking home, we have been reading these together throughout the week too.  The children also wrote descriptions of themselves using fantastic adjectives, making word banks first to allow them to think carefully about the words they could use. The descriptions are very good.  They  also did some work on punctuation; how to use question marks correctly.

In numeracy, we have been learning about place value and partitioning numbers.  We have played different games to help our understanding and have started to use our new maths jotters with squared paper – learning how to lay out our number work correctly.  They are looking great!

On Thursday the children got the chance to be ‘Play Leaders.’  In small groups, they visited the P1 classrooms, assisting them with their activities and modelling good play.  The P3 children helped with turn taking and sharing, gave them ideas and helped them to really engage in the play.  They showed all 5 of our school values and really enjoyed themselves too!

We have been looking a little more at trees – the trunk and branches this week.  In art we looked at the shapes and forms of the branches and used bright colours to create eye catching pictures.  The colouring was quite restful too, a good bit of mindfulness 🙂

Our Superhero Class Charter is really coming on, just needing a title now!

At Assembly on Friday we were presented with ‘Peggy Bear.’  She will stay with us in P3 for the week.  We won her for walking quietly and sensibly through the school.  We have been working hard at being good role models for the younger children and it is being noticed!  Great work P3B 🙂

Have a great weekend.

P6A Blog WE 31.8.18

Welcome to primary 6A

In Literacy we listened to a story called Palmer and the Mermaid. It was about a kind fisherman called Palmer who found a mermaid and the mermaid gave him the powers of healing and finding things that were lost. Nine years later he had to go into the sea and find the mermaid. So we have written what we think about the characters and set a plan for rewriting the story next week. We also did Kung Fu punctuation.

In  Numeracy we did rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and even 1000.We did multiplication and division and we had to colour squares in the answers on the blocks to find out the image that we had on our sheet. There was harder ones and easier ones and they both had different images on them.

We played lots of games in PE  and health and wellbeing. One that we all really enjoyed was Boccia and we had two different groups and they both played. We had a blue and a red group and we ended up having a tie with 2 and a half. We got challenged to lots of hard ball games. We managed it but it was difficult.

In Science we talked about electricity and watched a few videos on facts about electricity and how it works, we talked about the dangers of it and we all shared some stories about electricity and how you can get a shock. We talked about electric fences and how to never go near them or touch them as they are highly dangerous, although we found out that it doesn’t harm the horses, it is just like us saying to them “don’t.”

Thank you for reading this week’s blog this was written by the blog crew for this week and P6A see you next week! J;)

P4/5 Week commencing 27th August 2018

We have got off to a “tiggerrific” start in P4/5 and everyone has been working very hard.  This week we have won the “peg challenge” for showing that we can quickly line up in a quality line and move around the school quietly.

In writing we have written an adventure story about one of the toys in the classroom called Patch and been working on up-levelling our writing to make it more exciting.

In ICT we completed our wellbeing survey and discussed how we were feeling about being in our new class.  Everyone said they were enjoying themselves and having fun!

We have made lovely postcards to show all the interesting places we went to on our holidays and shared some of our adventures with the class during circle time.

We have also been looking at the importance of having a “growth mind-set” and made posters for display in the classroom.  We discovered that Tigger likes to say, “Don’t say no, give it a go!”

We have been working hard on our Class Charter and agreed all the class rules and responsibilities.  We have also looked at how they link to the Springfield School values and Rights Respecting Schools.  Our fantastic display for the classroom is almost complete.

We have also made jigsaw pieces to represent all the skills we need to work towards learning which will assist us in the world of work.

We have also been playing the game “fly around the world” to practice our mental maths skills and have been looking at symmetry.

In addition to this we have have started reading our new class novel entitled “School Ship Tobermory” by Alexander McCall Smith.

Primary 2B

This week has flown by. The children are settling in to their new reading books. All on the next stage up and next week we’ll get into a regular routine.

We have been doing Phonics assessments this week and have split the children into 2 groups between myself and Miss.Prince.  The class have been revising letters of the alphabet and practicing the formation of letters, both upper and lower case.

In connection to the book we read “The Giraffe, the Pelly and me”, we have designed our own sweetie jars. Some great ideas. We have been practising our common words and concentrated on “the” this week.

In Number we have continued with ordering and sequencing numbers to 100 and the children have enjoyed asking each other questions related to this.

Our outdoor learning this year is about Woodland animals and we have been talking about which animals live in the woodlands and what their habitats are like.

We have been discussing respecting other people’s property in Circle time.

Have a lovely weekend and hopefully the sun is going to shine.

Our Values

Punctuation, Place Value and Play Leaders (P3A)

In Literacy this week we continued to consolidate our use of adjectives. On Monday, we looked at the characters, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, from James and the Giant Peach and we worked with our learning partners to come up with adjectives to describe these characters. We used our adjectives to write a descriptive paragraph about Aunt Sponge. Afterwards, we made our own character for the story and we had to use adjectives to describe our new characters.

This week we have also looked at varying our use of punctuation by using question marks. We played ‘Amazing Punctuation’ on Education City and then we looked at how to use question marks in sentences.  In our new jotters, we corrected sentences by adding capital letters and question marks and then we created our own questions, punctuating them accurately. We have been working really hard to keep our jotter work neat.

On Monday we got our first reading book in P3. Miss Harrison was very impressed with our fluency and use of expression when reading aloud. Next week we will start our spelling and spelling homework.

In Numeracy and Mathematics this week, we have been learning about place value. We have been learning to find the value of each digit in whole numbers and we have been learning to partition numbers. We have played different place value games, we have recorded whole numbers on place value charts and we have completed a variety of place value activities. On Tuesday, we used our new Numeracy and Maths jotters to record our number partitioning. Miss Harrison was very proud of our work and the presentation was excellent. We got 3 dojo points for neat jotter work!

Since we are such sensible and responsible P3 pupils, this year we are going to become P3 Play Leaders. This will involve supporting the P1 pupils with their play. This week we went to P1 and became leaders in different play areas. We encouraged the P1’s to play nicely together, share and take turns. Miss Harrison gave us different scenarios and we discussed how we could help in each case. Mrs McAulay and Mrs Gordon commented on how fantastic and responsible we were on our first day as play leaders.

In P3 our Outdoor Learning focus is ‘Trees’. Throughout the year, we will be taking part in different outdoor learning activities and observing the changes in trees over the seasons. This week we looked at the two types of trees and we were able to work out with our learning partners what makes a tree an evergreen. We looked at the different characteristics of deciduous and evergreen trees and then we went out to our outdoor area and we went on a tree hunt. We used a tree identification sheet and looked carefully at the different leaves that we found.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P6B Rivers, electricity and emotions

Our learning this week…..

Monday: Today we started symmetry we had to make our symmetrical patterns and some of us got to describe them and explain. We also started the 1 to 5 scale and we talked about our feelings and how to calm down.

Tuesday: Today we started our topic on Rivers. We created a diagram showing the journey of a river which is split into the upper, middle and lower course. As part of our research we watched some videos showing the journey of a river from its source to the mouth.

Wednesday: In Science we were learning about electrical circuits. We found out that batteries don’t have electricity in them, they have a chemical in them that pushes the electrons around to make electricity.

We have started to read the book Wonder by R.J Palacio which is about a boy called August who has a facial deformity and is starting school for the first time.

Thursday: We revised our knowledge of 6 digit numbers, looking in particular at how we write 6 digit numbers in words, in order and identify the place value of each digit. The class played a game called the silent human number line to consolidate placing 6 digit numbers in order.

Friday: Today in assembly we were talking about safety around electricity water and fire. We also talked about what to do if we get lost.

We are aiming to run a mile every day in our daily mile.

Hope you all have a good weekend.

Numbers to 100, jungle explorers and woodland animals in P2A

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read P2A’s blog. We’ve had a very busy first full week back so we have lots to tell you about!

In PE we used our imaginations and went on a jungle adventure, we became explorers – jumping over logs, swinging through trees, running away from tigers and swimming through rivers! We moved around the space sensibly and followed the instructions.

In Maths this week we have been continuing our work on numbers to 100, focusing on numbers before, after and in between. The Big Numbers Song is helping us gain confidence when counting to 100:

In Literacy we have been revising the sounds and common words we learnt in Primary 1. In Giraffe, the Pelly and Me, Billy opened his own sweet shop full of scrumptious sweeties! We decided to have a go at designing and describing our own sweets, we had fantastic ideas and we were very confident when sharing our ideas with the class.

Our outdoor learning focus is woodland animals, we have decided we would like to learn more about animals that hibernate. We looked at animal habitats and did line drawings showing woodland animals in their habitats:

In P2 we develop our computer skills. Our computer time is on a Monday afternoon, this week some lovely P3 children came to help us. We learnt how to carry a laptop safely and how to open the login page using Ctrl-Alt-Delete (this is tricky!) If you have a computer at home it would be great to practise this.

We are loving having the painting out during freeplay!

Reading books are now up and running, new books will be given out on Mondays and should be handed in on Fridays.

Homework starts next week. Homework will also be handed out on Mondays and should be handed in on Fridays. In homework jotters you will find suggested reading questions, spelling activities, Maths activities and a word list. We recommend completing one reading question, one spelling activity and one maths activity per week but this is very flexible. Children will get a new word list each week.

Have a lovely weekend,
Love P2A and Miss Prince x

Primary 5 Blog – w/b 26th August

This week in Primary 5 we have been learning about the 5 point scale,  to help us understand our own and other peoples feelings.  We also completed our Class Charter, using emojis to show that we agree to keep the class rules.

In Maths  we did a carousel of activities practising our tables and subtraction.  In number talks, we looked at subtraction strategies.

In PE our focus is teamwork. We played a variety of games to help us with this.

In writing we wrote a story based on video clip called ‘Create’.

We also completed some dictionary work.

We read the Dr Seuss story – ‘The Places You’ll Go’ and discussed how having a Growth Mindset will help us in life.

In science with Mrs Tulloch, we created mnemonics – for the planets – ask us if we can remember these.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards,

Primary 5 and Mrs Kerr
