Speech Marks, Farming and Spider’s Webs (P3B)

As we continue our study of Charlotte’s Web, we began the week looking at some vocabulary from the book.  We learned dictionary skills, using our knowledge of the alphabet.  We practised together at first then we worked on individual tasks; looking up tricky words and writing down the definition.

Also on the theme of Charlotte’s Web, we have been looking at farming, in particular the different types of farms we have in Scotland and the food and produce that comes from each.  We also investigated the foods that are made from farm produce, e.g., cereal, yoghurts, meat pies, bread, etc. Here are some pictures of our shops and farmer’s markets full of products made from farm produce.

On Tuesday, we began to learn about using speech marks when writing direct speech.  We learned the rules of how to use them, then chose which way we would like to practice using them.  There were 3 activities to choose from: 1. Write out a story changing the text in speech bubbles to direct speech, using speech marks correctly.  2. Copy sentences on a whiteboard – writing the speech marks in the correct places and ask a friend to check it before rubbing it  out and moving on to the next sentence. 3. Find sentences in your reading book which feature speech marks, copy the sentences onto the graffiti wall.

For a first attempt we all did very well, we were enthusiastic and all managed to use speech marks in some format.  There was a lot to remember.  We are good at spotting where the speech marks should go, we need to remember the other rules of punctuation and continue to use full stops, question marks and exclamation marks correctly – inside the speech marks. We also need to remember to take a new line every time a new person speaks.  We will continue to practise this over the next few weeks.

On Thursday Wilber met Charlotte in Chapter 4 of our novel.  After lunch when we arrived back in to our classroom, our Charlotte had spun ‘Salutations’ into our classroom web.  We are looking forward to hearing how Charlotte and Wilbur’s friendship develops next week.  We then made our own spiders webs.  We practised using different types of lines – straight and curved to make the shapes we needed.  Some children chose to colour using a paint wash and some chose to make colourful webs using oil pastels.  Drawing the lines was tricky to begin with and we had to be quite resilient and keep trying to draw the outside of the web.  The results are very good and I’m looking forward to putting them up in the classroom.

Next week, we are looking forward to the benchball festival and will be reading more of Charlotte’s Web, thinking about the friendship between Charlotte and Wilber and how we can be good friends to each other.

Have a nice weekend, P3B and Mrs Kennedy 🙂

For Numeracy

We also learnt about the RUCSAC strategy for problem solving – CC

We added 3 digit numbers addition and used subtraction to check that our answer is correct. MS and NJ

HWB

We learnt that discrimination is when people are treated unfairly because of their skin colour, age, religion and race.  – RP, HM, EM

PE-

We went to the Rugby Club and focused on catching the ball and passing it.    We also learnt “dodging” people so that we don’t get tackled.  FD

Alphabetical order, speech marks and spider’s webs (P3A)

In reading this week we have been learning to use alphabetical order to find words in a dictionary. We watched a Learn Screen on Education City about using a dictionary and then we played a game called ‘Space Venture’. We worked with a partner to locate words in the dictionary to play the game. Afterwards, Miss Harrison gave us some words from our chapter in Charlotte’s Web and we had to use our dictionaries to find the meaning of the words and write them down.

This week we have been learning how to use speech marks. We learned about different rules that you need to follow when using speech marks and then we went to different activities. We picked our own learning activities. Some of us were rewriting sentences putting the speech marks in the correct places, some of us were looking at speech bubbles in a text and writing the words using speech marks and some of us were copying sentences from our reading books, showing speech marks correctly, on a graffiti wall.

This week we have been continuing to learn to spell words with different letter patterns. We have also been revising our common words. We always practise our spelling in different active ways and this week we were making our words out of play dough, typing our words on the computer, making word searches with our words, creating secret agent words and tracing around our spelling words.

In Numeracy and Maths we have been continuing to learn different addition strategies. This week we were learning to add two 2-digit numbers by adding the tens, adding the units and then adding our answers together. Some of us have also been learning how to add several small numbers and some of us have been learning to use a written method to add two 3-digit numbers. We have all been using our addition facts and strategies to solve different word problems.

In Social Studies this week, we were learning to identify forms of agriculture in Scotland & foods associated with these. Miss Harrison told us about different types of farms in Scotland and then we played a game where we had to match the food/produce associated with each farm. Finally, we drew pictures of food/produce associated with different forms of agriculture in Scotland.

In Science we have been continuing to learn about forces. This week we were learning that forces can make things move and/or change direction and that forces can be either pushes or pulls. We watched a video called ‘What makes things move?’ and we discussed examples of pushes and pulls. Then Miss Harrison gave us different images and we had to organise them into two groups – pushes and pulls. We also investigated what happens when a push and pull are equal in strength and opposite in direction.

In Art this week we were learning to create work using the visual elements line & pattern. On Wednesday we were introduced to a new character in our book, Charlotte. Charlotte is a spider who makes beautiful patterned webs. We looked at photographs of a spider’s webs and discussed the different lines used in the web. Miss Harrison showed us how to use straight and curved lines to create a web and then we picked which way we would like to make our own webs. We used oil pastels and wax resist or markers and oil pastels. Our webs are beautiful too!

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P4/5 Week commencing 12th November 2018

In handwriting we have been learning how to join letters to the letter “s”. We have also been trying our best to keep our work very neat and our letters on the line.  We have also been working on our pencil control techniques to help us.

In Maths we have been practicing our “number talks” and we have started looking at 2D shapes.  We discovered that 2D shapes are flat but 3D shapes have dimension.  We have also been learning the different names the shapes are called.  We also have been working on SumDog to help us revise our tables.  In Big Maths we have been working hard to complete all the sums in the allotted timescale.

In Science we started learning about the major organs of the body.  We drew round a body and then tried to draw where we thought the major organs were located.

In PE we have been working on our passing, catching and “the three step” rule for handball.

We had our third “Rugby taster” sessions at Linlithgow Rugby Club.  We worked on improving our throwing, passing and catching skills.  We are looking forward to going back next Tuesday.

In French we have been learning how to say the days of the week and our ages.

In Drama we acted out a scene from “The Animals of Farthing Wood”.  Mrs Hogg played the part of badger and we were all different animals.  We all had to leave the woods and find a new home.

In our class novel entitled “School Ship Tobermory” Matron was kidnapped by poachers and the Captain Macbeth sailed towards the “Albatross” to try and stop them by taking the wind out of their sails. Mr Rigger called the Coast Guard to help stop them and rescue Matron.

By Mr Ritchie and all the “Tiggerrific” P4/5s.

P1a weekly news

This week we have been learning 2 new sounds “l” and “c” and 3 new common words he, me and is. We love trying to beat Mrs Gordon when we have to make words or find sounds on our magnetic boards. Some of the fun activities included making caterpillar patterns, cotton wool clouds, ladybirds and more…

In numeracy we have been focusing on revising addition to 2,3 and 4, and learning the facts for 5 and 6. It is quite tricky so the more we can practice and add things at home the better. We have used lots of concrete materials like numicon, blocks, pasta, counters, people…anything really.

in HWB we thought a lot about being a kind on world kindness day and in PE we focused on coordination. Mrs Gordon made us throw and catch balls and beanbags without dropping them. Some of us even added in a clap before we caught them! We really had to use our eyes and space well.

Happy weekend

Mrs Gordon and P1a

Fireworks Fun in P1B

This week we were learning all about the ‘l’ and ‘c’ sounds. We were printing with the Lego bricks, building letters with the Lego, making letters with the leaves, making caterpillar patterns, using cotton wool to make clouds for C and using the cars to trace our letter shapes. We also had a go at some caption writing on whiteboards. Mrs McAulay put a picture on the board and we had to think of a sentence we could write about it. We then had to practise using our finger spaces and phoneme fingers to sound out and write out little sentence.

In  Numeracy we continued our work on addition. We were learning all of the addition facts for 2, 3, 4 and 5…….. finding all of the different ways to make these numbers. We used 2 plates to split objects and also used the Numicon to visually see which numbers add together to give us these answers.

In HWB this week we were celebrating World Kindness Day. We talked all about our value of kindness and came up with ideas of things we could do in school and at home to show kindness to others. Mrs McAulay is keeping her eyes peeled to see if we are doing any of them. In PE we continued to develop our ball skills and learnt how to work co-operatively with a partner. We used different parts of our bodies to move the ball and practised throwing and catching at the end.

This week we also started our Nativity rehearsals. We have been working with Primary 2 to learn some of our songs but it is all top secret at the moment!!

Reminders:

  • Christmas lunch and Pantomime letters back to school asap

Hoping you all have a lovely weekend!

Shoe Box Appeal 2018

Primary 3 would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our Shoe Box Appeal.  It was World Kindness Day on Tuesday and  kindness is one of our very important values at Springfield, this has certainly been shown by our community too. We were overwhelmed by the kindness of Springfield families and 90 shoe boxes are now on their way to children in areas of the world where they will be very much welcomed.

Miss Harrison and Mrs Kennedy would also like to commend both P3 classes who took their roles very seriously, communicating very well with classes throughout the school and working hard to collect and organise the boxes when they arrived.

Nativity Practice, letter writing and warm fuzzies in P2A

This week we found out our parts in the Nativity and started rehearsing the songs in the hall. We are setting an excellent example, showing the Primary 1s how we sit, sing and join in with the actions. Song words will go home in homework jotters on Monday, although they have learnt most of the words already!

In Maths we started learning about subtraction within numbers to 20.  We found out that we can use our knowledge of subtraction within 10 to help us. For example:

7-5 = 2

17-5 = 12

We used a number line to help us with subtraction sums. We must remember to count the hops (sometimes we were forgetting and counting the number we started on).

Here’s a fun game to practise this strategy at home:

In Literacy, we have been learning how to write a letter. We know where to put the address and what information to include in a letter. We all did a fantastic job of writing letters to Katie Morag; we even had a go at writing a question for Katie.

As this week is anti-bullying week, we would like to tell you a bit about what we do in P2A to promote kindness. You may have heard the children talking about warm fuzzies. A warm fuzzy is a kind word or action. For example;

  • Helping someone if they are stuck
  • Inviting someone to play if they are on their own
  • Giving someone a compliment

When we give or receive a warm fuzzy, we can put a warm fuzzy pompom in the jar. When the jar is full we can have a warm fuzzy party. The jar is starting to fill up because we are very good at giving warm fuzzies in P2A.

Some photos of our free play fun:

Thank you for reading our blog, have a great weekend when it gets here.

Springfield and Bonnytoun News

Thank you to all parents who came along to our successful ‘Big Spell’ event on Wednesday of this week. We loved sharing our passion for teaching this aspect of literacy with you! We hope that you had fun and enjoyed visiting classes to take part in the different spelling activities on offer.  Our teaching of spelling starts in nursery and is a progressive programme right up to P7.

We had an assembly today to mark Remembrance Day. We linked Poppy Day to our school value of ‘being kind.’ We talked about the fact that disagreements, fighting and indeed wars, can be avoided if we understand differences and treat each other with kindness. On Sunday the 11th, some of our P7 pupils will be laying a wreath of poppies in St Michael’s Church on behalf of the Springfield community.

The nursery boys and girls had a lovely Diwali celebration this week and we thank H’s family who shared their beautiful culture with us all.  We had a very special day. Thank you! Xxx💖⭐️

I have three pupil achievements for this week:

– Well done to S for his Judo trophy and to C for his football success. These boys are both in P3 and continue to do us proud! Well done boys!

-Congrtaulations to S who is also in P3. We had a lovely chat about the rainbow trout that he managed to catch whilst fishing with his Dad. He also told me that he put the fish back into the water so that it could swim away. Brilliant effort S!

Have a great weekend!

Miss Baillie xx💖
