Festive fun in P1a

We were very excited to see that Mrs Gordon had decorated the classroom this week ready for Christmas. We all really enjoyed visiting santa at the Christmas Fayre today and spending our money on lots of lovely things. Here are the snowflakes and calendars that we made to sell.

In literacy this week we continued on our phonics journey with the sounds “w” and “qu”. We are becoming very confident with our cvc (consonant, vowel, consonant) words, and really improving when we write sentences on our whiteboards or in our jotters.

In numeracy, more practice with our number bonds to 10. We focused on doubles and can all confidently say our doubles to 5. We also had a first lesson on time where we learnt how to tell the ‘o’ clock time on a clock face. Mrs Gordon could not believe how quickly we were able to know that the ‘o’clock time is the number the small hand points to.

We are very excited to share our nativity with you next week, and have been practising hard all week to make our wriggly nativity a huge success.

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a.

Christmas has Arrived in P3B

We are really enjoying the build up to Christmas and have been busy again this week.  We were in charge of making the angels for the Christmas wall display in the hall.  We decided to make ‘funky angles,’ they are more a rock band than a choir and I’m sure they will really brighten up the hall for the nativities taking place next week.

We all really enjoyed our Christmas lunch on Thursday, the food was delicious and it was lovely eating at tables with table cloths and listening to Christmas music – the kitchen staff did an excellent job and great fun was has by all!

Once we had finished making all our Christmas decorations for our stall, we had to make signs to let our customers know what we were selling and how much they were.  We also added some information to entice people to buy our goods.  We could choose to use card, pens and art resources or a netbook to make our signs.  What a team – I’d hire them to work in my marketing department any day 🙂

The Christmas Fair was a great success and a lot of fun!  Our Reindeer lollipops sold out very quickly and our decorations went well too.  We reduced them from £1 to 50p in the last half hour and a group took them around the school in a basket, they sold out too – fantastic sales people 🙂 We made a profit of £79.35. Now to decide what to spend it on.

In other news this week; Miss Baillie read us a story on Monday called ‘Here Comes Jack Frost.’ P1 to P3 are helping Miss Baillie to make a wall display for the infant corridor.  We summarised the story in comic strips and coloured them the same colour as the pictures in the book – all blue and white!  They look really effective and tel the main parts of the story really well.

In Maths we are finishing off our addition work for the time being,  we have been using our addition skills to solve word problems this week.

In science with Mrs McVay we have been exploring ‘gravity.’  We played games with balloons, made parachutes and played with paint – dropping it onto paper from different heights to see what effect it had on the paint when it landed.

E and C said their Brownie Promise earlier in the week.  They brought in their Brownie bags and showed them to the class.  They were very good at explaining what happened when they said their Promise too.  Well done girls.

Have a lovely weekend, P3B an d Mrs Kennedy x

P4

Literacy

We learnt to identify and use adverbs in a sentence.

We learnt to write an informal letter.   We addressed them to Santa.

Numeracy

We were actively solving word problems.  This required two different steps to get the answer.  One is addition and the other is subtraction.

We played multiplication games online.

We also did division -RP

Christmas Fayre

SCD- I think it was really fun making the snow globes.

LKS-  It was unexplainable.  It was the best!

Primary 5 w/e 7/12/18

As we count down towards Christmas, we have had a busy week with our enterprise activities. We have filled our gift bags for the Day Care Centre with the donations we received. Many thanks if you helped us with these. We also created candy cane reindeer and snowman ‘mystery’ cups to sell at the Christmas Fayre. We have raised £88 this morning at the Fayre. Well done to everyone.

In Literacy we have continued to read Sky Song and complete activities related to this.

In maths our focus has been number sequences and patterns. We have looked at how to work out which numbers are missing when the sequence goes up and down.

Have a lovely weekend

Kind regards

Christmas Cheer at the Christmas Fair (P3A)

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been learning to add several small numbers and use our addition facts to solve problems. We played a game called ‘Top Spot’ where we had to add two next-door numbers to find the number above and race to the Top Spot. This week, some of us were also revising adding two 2-digit numbers and adding near doubles. We were also learning how to add a 3-digit number and a 2-digit number.

In Literacy we have been consolidating summarising a text. Miss Baillie read us a story called ‘Here Comes Jack Frost’ and when we were back in class, we identified the main parts of the text on our planning sheets. We used our notes to summarise the story on our own comic strips. We had to make sure that we put our main ideas in the correct order and we also illustrated our comic strips too. We worked really hard on our comic strips and we can’t wait to see them up on Miss Baillie’s infant corridor display!

This week we have also been revising answering questions about a text. Miss Harrison read us a chapter from Charlotte’s Web and we listened carefully. Afterwards, we answered different types of questions about the text. We worked hard to answer in sentences and use capital letters and full stops.

In PE, we have started Basic Moves. On Thursday we went to the hall and we took part in different activities to develop our movement skills. We looked at object control and travelling and practised dribbling, throwing and catching, skipping and striking a target.

This week we have been really busy planning and preparing for our Christmas Enterprise. We finished painting and decorating our wooden Christmas tree decorations and got them ready to sell. We also made signs, price lists and a rota for our stall using Microsoft Word.

On Friday it was the PTA Christmas Fair. We used a rota system to make sure that everyone got a turn on the stall. We sold reindeer lollipops and wooden Christmas tree decorations. We really enjoyed planning, preparing and selling our lollipops and decorations and we really enjoyed the Christmas Fair, especially the cakes and candyfloss! Thank you to everyone who supported our stall and to the PTA for organising the Christmas Fair.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have had a good week and that you have a lovely weekend.

Primary 2B

We’ve continued with our consonant blends and will do Phonics assessments this week, on the ones we have been learning so far this term.
Diary entries have been our writing focus and we learnt that we need to put the date and then “Dear Diary”. Our success criteria was to use”I” and wow words to describe our feelings. We were pretending to be Katie Morag and what we did and how we felt in the story of Tiresome Ted. There were some great diary entries and I think we all remembered to use “I”!
In Maths we have continued with subtraction, with some of us taking on the challenge of the “hot” questions. The children will explain.
We have been painting and are beginning to assemble the people of the Isle of Struay, as well as the buildings and a map of the island. These are for our display with P2A.
Look forward to seeing you all next Friday for the Christmas Fair. We’re sure that you’ll love what we have made and want to spend your money.

Springfield and Bonnytoun News

We have taken a number of classes out of school this week into the local community and surrounding area, to learn across the wider curriculum.

P7 had a wonderful time skiing at Hillend on a Tuesday of this week with all children making good progress after their first lesson.

Our P1 children had a visit to Tesco to sample a range of different fruits as part of their learning about Africa and the book ‘Handa’s Surprise.’

P5 visited Cross House to take part in an RME experience associated with Christmas.

Today, P6B led a super assembly  about the benefits of reading and our contribution to the First Minister’s Reading Challenge. Did you know that we now have a group of children who run a lunchtime ‘book club’ in school as well as an infant ‘reading committee’ which is led by Mrs Kennedy? We all love reading at Springfield and sharing our experiences of different texts.

Thank you to all children and families who have made and handed in a Santa or Snowman decoration for our two Xmas trees which will be at the Festival or Christmas Trees at St Michael’s Church next weekend. We hope that you will go along to the church to see our trees if you have time.

Next week our Christmas festivities start with our nursery sing-along with a visit from Santa. We also have our pupil and staff Xmas lunch on Thursday 6th.

Our latest newsletter will come out next week with more of our news and events for the new year.

Have a great weekend!

Miss Baillie xx💖

Today brings November’s learning to a close.

We have had another busy week.

The weather was kind to us on Wednesday and we managed to walk along to Cross House and take part in activities related to Christmas. The children heard from some of the characters in the Nativity Story, had a snack and completed craft activities. They should be able to bring these home soon.

In maths we have begun to explore number patterns and sequences, looking at how these can go up as well as down.

In literacy we have continued to explore our class novel Sky Song, creating images of the scenes the author describes.

Our problem solving task this week was to create a decoration for a Christmas Tree,  using symmetry and repeating patterns. This was harder than it sounds!!

Have a lovely weekend.
