Primary 5 – w/e 7th June 2019

This week we have started to make guitars in Science. Our challenge is to make sounds that have three different pitches.

In maths we have been using tangrams to develop our problem solving skills. We have explored probability and the language that is used. We created our own probability lines. We also looked at co-ordinates and practised reading and writing them. We then had a go at creating shapes and characters through plotting co-ordinates.

In PE, we have continued athletics, practising hurdles. We had a quidditch session with Kieran, developing throwing, catching and team skills.

Some of us participated in the triathlon, cycling, swimming and running. We also did some Highland Games activities.

While the others were at triathlon, the rest of us played ‘The Pirate Game’, which included developing co-ordinate skills, addition and careful listening.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Division, Mapping and Budding Authors (P3A)

This week we have been learning to divide by 4 and 5. We have played lots of division games to improve our recall of our division facts and we have learned how to solve missing number sums such as ? รท 5 = 6. Some of us have been learning to divide with remainders. We have been using concrete materials to help us with our dividing. We have also been linking our multiplication and division facts and revising dividing whole numbers by 2-10.

In Mathematics, we learned to use Venn diagrams. We played an exciting game called โ€˜The Great Escapeโ€™ on Education City and then we sorted numbers into the correct parts on the Venn diagram. We then created our own Venn diagrams using a list of numbers.

This week we have turned into amazing authors! Over the next few weeks, we are going to be learning to write an imaginative story. On Tuesday we started to look at writing a story beginning. ย We looked at interesting story openers and then we looked at different techniques that writers can use to begin a story such as a character description, setting description, dialogue, question or statement. Afterwards we created our own interesting first sentences and made notes on our characters and setting. On Wednesday we used our notes to write the beginning of our own imaginative stories.

In Literacy this week we also learned how to use a thesaurus. We watched a cartoon about using a thesaurus and then we learned how to use a thesaurus to find words correctly. Afterwards we played a synonyms board game, sorted cards into groups with similar meanings, used an online thesaurus to find interesting words and used a thesaurus to find four synonyms for different words. When writing our own stories, we were able to use a thesaurus to vary our use of vocabulary.

In French, we revised days of the week. We listened to a song about days of the week in French, watched an episode on High Five French and then we looked for the words for days of the week in French on a word search. We have asked Miss Harrison if we can learn words and phrases for animals so this will be our next French lesson!

As part of our Local Area study, we learned to use symbols on maps. We looked at a map of Legoland and discussed how we could use the map to find out information and looked at the different symbols. Afterwards we explored how to use a key and symbols on a map. Then we worked in groups to create a key and then used our symbols to annotate a map of our school.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

Poetry and Paragraphing in P3B

We began the week looking at paragraphing.ย  We were learning what paragraphs are used for and when we should be taking a new paragraph as we begin to write lengthier pieces of text.ย  We learned that a new paragraph should be taken when we change time, place, subject or argument.ย  We worked in pairs to read a passage about frogs that had not been split into paragraphs.ย  We discussed and highlighted where the paragraphs should have begun and ended.ย  We then made posters for our literacy wall, giving clear information to help us to write in paragraphs.

As part of our local area topic we continued our art theme of shape and line and drew either the Burgh Halls or St Michael’s church using charcoal pencils.ย  The pencils were very effective for both lines and shading and wereย  particularly good for drawing these old stone buildings.ย  We looked really carefully at the lines and shapes created by the brickwork, windows and other interesting features.ย  Everyone worked hard to make their drawing as accurate as possible and enjoyed using the charcoal to create various effects.

We actually have some photographs of numeracy this week!ย  We have all been learning to divide, using our knowledge of times tables to help us.ย  As always we learn a variety of methods to use when solving our maths problems and we choose the one that works best for us.ย  This week some children had very good recall of their tables so this really helped when it came to dividing, we also used hundred squares, counters and whiteboards to support us as we work.

In outer maths we have been reading tables and charts.ย  We used them to find the information we needed to answer questions.

Over the past couple of weeks we have been learning about different world religions.ย  Last week we had an introduction to several different world religions and this week we learned more about Islam, specifically Ramadan and Eid.ย  We read a story called ‘Rameena’s Ramadan’ in it the main character was a girl the same age as us and she helped us to learn what Ramadan and Eid are like for her.ย  As part of our learning we discovered that lanterns and lights are often used as decorations throughout Ramadan, we decorated and made our own lanterns.

On Tuesday and Wednesday we wrote some poetry.ย  We wrote acrostic poems using the words DO NOT LITTER.ย  We began by making notes of words and phrases that would help us to write our poem.ย  We used dictionaries and thesaurus’ and discussed ideas with our friends to help us to write our notes. Our poems are very goodย  and everyone met our success criteria.ย  Some children even managed to add some alliteration which was an extra challenge.

P3B have worked very hard this week, we have had a calm and busy classroom, great work everyone!

Paragraphs, Poetry and Places of Interest (P3A)

In Numeracy this week we have been learning to divide by 3. We have been using our multiplication facts for the 3 times-table to help us with our division. Some of us have also been learning to divide by 2, 4, 5 and 10 and some of us have been learning to divide by 6 and 8.

In Mathematics, we have been learning to answer questions to get information from different charts and tables. We were able to collect data using tally marks in a frequency table and then answer questions about the data. We also looked at bar graphs and compared data.

In Literacy we have been revising using paragraphs. We looked at a non-fiction text about frogs and in pairs, highlighted where each new paragraph should be. Afterwards, we worked with a partner to create a poster explaining how and when to use paragraphs. We included information such as using paragraphs to group ideas, to make texts easier to read and organise text. Our paragraph posters will be displayed at our writing area to help people to use paragraphs in their writing.

During writing this week we looked at poetry. We looked at features of acrostic poems and then we came up with lots of words and phrases associated with litter. Afterwards we used these words and phrases to create each line in our acrostic poem โ€˜Do Not Litterโ€™. On Wednesday we created โ€˜Presentation Perfectโ€™ final drafts of our poems and illustrated our ideas.

Before the rain came on Wednesday, we went outside to play team games for PE. We were able to follow rules and adopt different roles. On Thursday afternoon, we continued our Fitness sessions. We worked positively with others to use equipment safely and we worked on improving our own levels of fitness.

In Art this week we explored using charcoal to create line, shapes and shading in pictures. We looked at two buildings in our local area, the Burgh Halls and St. Michaelโ€™s Church. We discussed the shapes and the lines that we could see in the buildings and then we observed and sketched the buildings using our charcoal. Afterwards we added shading. We were very pleased with our images!

Chat, chat, chatty P6a :)

On Monday we started to look at area and perimeter, it was a little confusing, however we are going to be working on these next week and we know we will understand it better as we learn more.

We continued to learn about maps and we added a key to these. Next week we will be looking at scale and proportion within maps before we create one for our buddy’s the week after next.

On Tuesday we had our last Tiny and Tall session, we really enjoyed these sessions and are looking forward to meeting our buddy’s again.

On Wednesday we worked on algebra in Maths, this was quite interesting and we are looking forward to doing more when we get back from camp.

We had a triathlon taster session, this was good fun, although we were all tired at the end.

We started to look at what sustainabilty and sustainable developments are and how we could incorporate these into new homes. Then we presented our Cala Homes V Towns People presentations. Cala homes won, however we then wrote letters to the planning department (Mrs Newton) to say that the homes should only be built if a variety of sustainable materials were used. We gave a number of examples and reasons as to why these would be suitable. Thank you to Mr Fyfe for helping us with this.

Camp next week, and Lendrick Muir for those not coming with us. Here’s hoping the weather will be good (but this is Scotland ๐Ÿ˜‰ย  )

Have a lovely weekend,

P6a and Mrs Newton ๐Ÿ™‚

P4/5 Week commencing 27th May 2019

In Maths this week we finished off the work on our bar & pie charts.ย  We then interpreted the data from the playground and made sets of questions to challenge each other.ย  In addition to this we also played a game of Noggle, the highest number generated was 12,600!

In Handwriting we practised forming our punctuation and added it into our writing this week.

In writing this week we wrote an entry in our diary about our excursion to the National Museum of Scotland.ย  We included lots of information about all the different artefacts and exhibits we saw.

In PE this week we played outdoor games including a game of โ€œroundersโ€ to improve our fitness levels.ย  On Thursday as the weather was not very good we played a selection of indoor activities including โ€œcornersโ€, โ€œtigโ€, โ€œdodge ballโ€ and โ€œcategoriesโ€.

In Reading we continued with our Literacy Circles with everyone taking turns at their specified roles. ย The Question Writers wrote very good questions to challenge their groups.

In Science this week we made electrical games to test our knowledge of electricity. It was great fun! Our models turned out brilliant and we worked well together to make them.

This week we worked in our co-operative groups and researched information about the history of the Union Canal.ย  We also looked at the interior design of canal boats and started to produce a design for our own model boat.

In RME we looked at Judaism with Mrs McAlpine where we learned the story about Moses and the burning bush.

In French this week we played a game of hangman using the different French greetings and feelings we had been learning and another game using body parts.

Our Language Ambassadors taught the class how to order their lunches in French.

The Maths club also had their first meeting to teach the P1-3โ€™s maths skills.ย  The children really enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to coming back next week.

Bar Charts and Houses in P2B

We had fun on Monday when we went for a walk in Springfield, looking at the different types of houses. We identified that there were more semi detached houses than other types and how town houses are different to flats. Our class bar chart also showed that more of us live in semi detached houses than any other.

Still using bar charts we decided what information we wanted to find out about and then created a tally chart and went around asking the class for their choices. We then created our own bar charts and were able to answer questions on these. Carroll Diagrams have also featured in our work on Data Handling.

Our spellings this week were adding ‘d’ and ‘bl,cl,fl,gl,pl and sl’. We have begun to create our stories by writing a character description of the main character in our story. Next week we will write a description of the setting and will then start to write the story.

We have continued with our house designs and there are some brilliant designs. Next we watched a powerpoint on how a house is built and had a great discussion, the children being very knowledgeable of the process. We began to sequence the order of work to be done.

Kieran came and did Futsal (Brazilian Football) with us which we all really enjoyed.

Have a good weekend everybody.

From P2B and Mrs.Burton

Butterflies in P1a

On Thursday we were very excited because our first butterfly hatched from it’s cocoon. Have a look at the photos of us today when Mrs Reid helped us to release 2 of the butterflies into the school garden. Very special moments….

This week we learnt our last 2 digraphs aw and au like saw and launch, and the common words do and as. We will now spend the rest of term revising these and consolidating our learning.

In numeracy we focused on ordering and sequencing whilst using the language more and less, smallest to largest etc. We also did some more data handling where we had to sort items and make a pictogram.

In PE we had Paul Pizza deliver an Enjoy a Ball session and Mrs Harris continue our gymnastics journey. We were learning about rolling using our different shapes. We have also been learning how to play rounders which is a lot of fun.

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a
