Greyfriars Bobby, Research and Benchball in P4B

Yet another busy week in P4B. We listened to the story of “Greyfriars Bobby” and then we wrote some very good recounts of the story. We displayed a very good understanding of the story. We have also been learning where to put commas in sentences, particularly focusing on lists. “Fing” our class novel was finished during the week and we all enjoyed it so much and had plenty of laughs. Now thinking about our next one.
In Numeracy, we have been estimating and rounding, as well as continuing with adding and subtracting 10’s, 100’s and 1000’s. 3D shape has also been part of our learning- describing shapes – how many edges, vertices etc. We have also been taking part in Number Talks and had some very good explanations from some members of the class.

We are now beginning to learn the names of classroom items in French and will continue next week.
Benchball has featured in our PE lessons and we really enjoy as well as our relay team games.

Look forward to seeing you at Parents Evening this week.
Love from P4B and Mrs.Burton

Literacy and English

In reading we read our books to Ms McAlpine and discussed our reading comprehensions with each other. We had some ERIC time (Everyone Reading in Class) to enjoy reading of our choice.

We also read a passage about India including what people ate and where they worked and answered questions in our jotter. We practised the letter ‘y’ in handwriting and tried lots of spelling activities to learn our words.

Numeracy and Mathematics

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes and also adding tens and hundreds. We practised reading data from bar graphs on Sumdog. We have also been learning more about different strategies that we can use to help us with number talks.by writing how we worked out the answers to questions on a post-it, then comparing to the post-its of strategies that others had used.

Learning across the Curriculum

In Health and Wellbeing we learned about different emotions and played a board game where we discussed the emotion we landed on. We enjoyed making fantastic Indian music with Ms Bain.

Achievements

Well done to CA for receiving a kindness certificate at assembly for always being helpful.

Dragon’s, fairyland and shape monsters in P1a

In Phonics this week we have been learning m and r. This is how you can make these at home :

m – down Maisie, back up Maisie, over the mountain, back up the mountain and over the next mountain.

r – down the robot’s back, back up then curl over his arm

Now we have learnt 8 sounds we can make a large number of CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words like mat, rat, pin, pat, sat…how many can you make?

In  numeracy we finished our numbers to 10 booklet by practising formation and how to make numbers 8, 9 and 10. Number 8 was really tricky, but we realised that you can make a ‘s’ and then join it up!

We launched our first IDL topic this week when a friendly dragon left us a trail of green glitter and a letter. He needs our help to rebuild Fairyland…we have already written him lots of letters and sent pictures so he knows we will help him. We also made a list of all the things we should do and that we need to rebuild Fairyland. What an exciting time…

In French we learnt how to say yes and no, oui and non. We also loved learning our bonjour, salut song for the European Day of Languages.

bonjour, salut song

We also learnt frere Jacques in French, Spanish and German….talented children. Mrs Gordon showed us a really funny clip of “les trois petits cochons” the 3 little pigs, here it is if you want to watch it again….literacy across languages!

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a

P7B

We at P7b, have been learning to compare and contrast  life of a child in Brazil our my own. We learnt about the siblings Samir and Samira.  We then revised our understanding on informal letter writing by pretending to send the letters to Samir and Samira.

For Numeracy, we have been learning to calculate discounts , we revised on decimal place value and practised our number talks everyday.

For Expressive Art, we have learnt different types of shading techniques, tonal shading and highlighting.  We are nearly done with our Caricature, so next week we will be posting pictures of them.

For big writing next week, we will be uplevelling our persuasive text.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Life’s Peach in P3A

P3A are really enjoying our class novel – James and the Giant Peach.  We answered some comprehension questions about the story on Monday, to show our understanding of the characters and the storyline.

On Tuesday, we had an adjectives lesson all about peaches.  We listened to Roald Dahl’s excellent description of the peach and worked in pairs to highlight all the adjectives he used.  We tasted peaches and peach juice and  then worked in groups, using our senses to think of words to describe the peach – what is looks, smells, tastes and feels like.  This gave us some great adjectives. Working on our own, we wrote interesting sentences about peaches using some of the adjectives we had come up with. We were trying to write even better than Roald Dahl.

As part of our Hawaiian topic, we had an art lesson on Green Turtles.  We used oil pastels to draw turtles and create fantastic patterns on the shells.  We then used paint for the sea.  They look amazing!  I can’t wait to get them up on the wall.

The response to our request for Aldi stickers has been amazing we now only need about 20 to reach the total of 300.  P3A have worked hard emptying our post box each day and sticking them on the huge poster in the correct spaces.  We’ll keep you updated on the sports kit that we receive and we’ll let you know if we win the £20,000!

There was great excitement this week as we started using maths jotters with squared paper pages.  Going from a workbook where there are spaces to write the answer to using a text book where you have to write out the sum and the answer is quite a big step.  We practised how to lay out the page first and we are now really getting the hang of it.  We have begun addition and we are writing our sums and answers clearly.  We finished our Symmetry topic by drawing our own symmetrical pictures or patterns on squared paper, this allowed Mrs Kennedy to see how well we have understood the topic.  We all did a super job 🙂

In French we have been learning greetings and how to order our lunch.  We had a really good Languages Assembly on Friday led by the school’s Language Ambassadors, we were singing in French, Spanish and German.

Have a good weekend 🙂  P3A and Mrs Kennedy

27.9.19 Primary 5/6

Welcome to Primary 5/6 blog

For grammar we did adverbs and verbs . We watched a video clip of Aladdin and had to make our own sentences up with exciting adverbs.

For comprehension we played Blankety  Blank  and a worksheet with missing words .

In maths we did proprties of a 3d shape and we did guess the number .  One group were looking at real life examples of where we use shape. Next week we are making nets. We played multiplication wars with packs of cards.

For our novel  “Wonder”,  we drew pictures of ourselves  and wrote 41 acts of kindness. We did beautiful paintings as well.

In science we did the cotton reel challenge . We had to make it move using as many different energy transfers as possible. Some people did 9.

At music with Ms Bain, we played a river song with different notes . Mrs Tulloch said it sounded great.

Spanish -we did conversations. Gracias.

Busy Britto Bonanza

This week we revisited our knowledge of money and how to use decimal places. This followed on from our work on percentages and fractions. Our problem solving activity was to find the smallest number of squares needed to fill an 11cm x 13cm rectangle. This was an interesting and challenging activity, sparking lots of debate and discussions.

As part of our Brazil topic we learned about Samir and Samira, two children from a favela in Rio de Janerio. We wrote letters to them, telling them about our lives and asking questions about theirs.

As a follow on from drawing faces in proportion last week we extended this learning by drawing self portraits and then used our knowledge of Britto to add tones, shapes, lines and colours to them- look out for these on parents nights.

We chose partners, groups and topics for our assembly on Brazil. Next week we will write our scripts and then rehearse this after the October break (not everyone is here the last week of term so we are doing the preparation early).

We helped our buddies log into the netbooks and played some games online with them. It was a lovely way to end an interesting (!!!) week in P7a 🙂

A reminder that we are all helping at parents nights next week. We all know which time, class and day we are helping at so please ask us if you want to know- oh and don’t forget to come to your appointment.

Have an excellent weekend (2 weeks until the holidays 🙂 )

Primary 6 – w/e 27th September 2019

This week we have been exploring place value. We created a human place value chart and put numbers into it. We practised reading and writing these numbers.

Our first number talk this week was addition, where we looked at different ways of completing addition mentally.

We have created our own mind map of the things we would like to learn about the River Congo, which we are going to research and compare to the River Forth.  This was the River that was voted for after trying to persuade each other that the river we have chosen to research was the best one.

In PE we have been putting all of our ball handling skills together and playing games of basketball.

We created a character description of our mythical creature for our storywriting.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Fantastic Mr Fox (P2B)

This week we finished reading our class novel, ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’. To celebrate our reading and use our knowledge of the story, we created ‘Wanted’ posters for Mr Fox. The farmers were getting tired of losing their chickens and geese! We used adjectives to create a description of Mr Fox and we drew a picture to help the reader. Some of us have been making our own Wanted posters during play.

During our writing lesson last week, we retold the story of ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. We drew pictures of the beginning, middle and end to help us to order the events in the story. Afterwards, we wrote sentences to match our pictures and we made sure that we put the main points in the correct order.

This week we have been learning the sounds ‘br’ and ‘cr’. We have also been revising ‘au’ and ‘aw’. To learn our new sounds, we have been word building, playing games on our Promethean board, finding ‘br’ words in a word search and writing sentences.

Last week in Numeracy and Mathematics, we learned to count on in ones to 100. Some of us were also learning to count to 1000. This week, we have been learning about place value and we have been talking about the digits that make up a number. We have been using money and cubes to count in tens and ones/units and we have been ‘breaking up’ numbers. For example, we have been learning that 95 is the same as 90 and 5.

This week we have been exploring a beach environment and it’s habitats. On Tuesday afternoon, we looked at coastal birds and we watched short videos about oystercatchers, puffins, guillemots and curlews. We learned some facts about each bird and we drew pictures of them on our beach habitats fact sheet. On Thursday afternoon, we looked at marine mammals. Next we will be learning about seashore minibeasts and underwater plants.

On Thursday afternoon, our P6 pals came to visit. We read our reading books with them during paired reading. Some of us even went to the P6 classroom! We enjoyed spending time with our P6 pals.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

Reporting, Number Talks and Habitats

We have had lots of fun in our learning this week. Please take a look at what we have been up to.

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been practising counting in 10’s to 100. Some of us can even count this backwards! Miss Muir was very impressed. We have even been counting in hundreds, tens and units all the way to 1000. We enjoyed this so much that some of us challenged ourselves to count above 1000 and write this correctly on our whiteboards. During free play we noticed Miss Muir set us a challenge: how many different things can we count in the classroom? Miss Muir was amazed at how many different things we were able to count. We have had our first full week of Number Talks and are using the signals Miss Muir has shown us during our Maths lessons. We also learned about breaking numbers apart into tens and ones/hundreds, tens and units. This is called partitioning. We find it challenging to say but Miss Muir says practise makes perfect!

In Literacy we became reporters this week for the Springfield Herald. We were reporting on seagulls eating Mr Grinling’s lunch from the Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch book. We learned what was in a newspaper report and highlighted the key features on the board. This helped us to write our own reports. Miss Muir even dressed up using a bow tie and microphone when reading out her report! Some of us liked this so much we decided to dress up too when we read out our reports to the class.

On Monday somebody had left out plastic cups and pictures of lighthouses on one of the class tables. Lots of us had a look and were excited to start creating our own mini lighthouses. We used art materials like glue, paper and crayons to create them. Some of us cut parts of the cup out to make a door and some of us made a background scene to go with the lighthouse. We made so many that Miss Muir wasn’t sure where to put them all!

We also met our P6 Pals on Thursday afternoon where they helped us with our reading books and made pictures together.

As part of our IDL we learned about beach habitats. We learned what a habitat was and which plants/animals lived on the beach. We loved learning about all the animals/plants especially watching video clips of them. When we were drawing and writing about our animals Miss Muir put on wave music. It was very calming! We even thought about having a rock pool for our tuff tray next week. Miss Muir thought this would be a great idea. We can’t wait to see it on Monday.

We hope you have a lovely weekend!

P2A and Miss Muir 🙂
