P7b Blog

It was Mr. Logan’s first day back on Wednesday after his paternity leave, but we want to say a huge thank you to Mrs. Begarnie, Mrs. Doran and Mrs. Tulloch for all of their hard work and the continuity that they provided in his absence.

In numeracy we have been extending our knowledge of place value whilst working with 7-digit numbers. By applying our previous learning, we have ordered and sequenced numbers in millions, rounded to the nearest 10,000, 100,000 and 1,000,000 and used our skills in data handling to interpret scales and estimate values beyond 1,000,000.

We are approaching the end of our novels in guided reading and will shortly be moving onto new texts. The quality of group discussions and our ability to tackle higher order questioning has impressed Mr. Logan. As a whole class, we will be reading The Great Kapok Tree. This will provide a stimulus for learning about the global issue of deforestation, tying in with our interdisciplinary studies of Brazil.

Next week we will put the finishing touches to our junk material Brazilian landmarks which we have been constructing in class. There will be some photos of these on Class Dojo next week, including the Iguazu Falls, Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, the Amazon Rainforest, a carnival scene and the Olympic Aquatics Centre. Prepare to be impressed with our hard work and creativity!

Ahead of the Sportshall Athletics Event next Wednesday at Linlithgow Leisure Centre, we have been practising for the various events during P.E. These include a 2-lap sprint, speed bounce, chest push, standing long jump and indoor javelin. Our fastest times and personal bests are continuing to improve, and we will give it our very best effort on the day.

Upcoming Information

  • 3 weeks of Futsal with specialist coach remaining, every Wednesday (1-2pm)
  • St.Michael’s Day Care Centre, 4 pupils to visit on Tuesday (1-3pm)
  • Sportshall Athletics on Wednesday (9-12am) at Linlithgow Leisure Centre
  • Skiing 4 week block begins Thursday 24th November (9-12am) at Hillend

Have a great weekend.

P7’s visit to Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory 11/11/16

What a fabulous visit P7 had to the Lady Haig Poppy Factory in Edinburgh.

We were fortunate to visit on the 11th November and had the honour of taking part in the Armistice Service at 11am.

Sean was confident during his reading and Grace laid the wreath on our behalf. We were all very proud of them. P7 were complimented when leaving for their behaviour and the way in which they conducted themselves today. A credit to their parents and to Springfield Primary School, and a perfect example of the responsible citizens and role models that we strive for in P7.

We learnt lots about World War II and Lily and Calum had an opportunity to dress as they would have at the time. Calum was scaring Mrs Gordon slightly !

After this we went into the factory and after hearing how the 43 individuals that work in the factory handmake all the poppies and wreaths, we had a chance to make our own. The children absolutely loved this and would have kept going all day…

Making these poppies was a fantastic end to a special trip. We made new memories whilst remembering old …

P5A’s Remembrance Assembly

Well done to P5A and Mrs McCartney for their hard work in putting together a Remembrance Assembly which was held in School yesterday. The children talked about why we wear red poppies on Remembrance Day each year and P6B made a beautiful 3-D vase of poppies to display outside the Gym Hall on the day. Conflict resolution was a major theme of the assembly and Mrs McCartney has been working hard to teach her children about Peer Mediation and how to resolve conflict in a respectful way. We truly believe that this is a vital life skill and thank you to P5A for sharing this important message with us today. By treating each other kindly and with respect, even if we disagree, we can work together to make our world a peaceful place to live in.

Have a lovely weekend everyone,

Miss Baillie x

Achievements Wall

image

Here is our new Achievements Wall in School! It is located in the corridor between our Infant and Upper classrooms and is an area designated for the celebration of success. We will try hard to ensure that every child gets a chance for their ‘achievement’ to be displayed on this wall, throughout their School career. Achievements can be either related to success in School or at home. In addition, Fraser in P7B and Adam in P6B are undertaking a ‘young leaders’ task to put pupil achievements on our ‘big screen’ in the foyer each week. Please have a look at our achievements each time that you are in School. We truly are a talented bunch!

Quality Diners’ Table!

image

Here are the children, (minus Fraser who was finished eating by the time Miss Baillie had her camera ready!), who were chosen by their teachers to sit at our new Quality Diners’ Table this week. As part of our positive behaviour policy, launched in August, children who are trying really hard to follow our School rules will be chosen to sit at our special table to eat lunch on a Thursday. The table will alternate between Infant and Upper school children on a weekly basis. This week was a chance for our Upper School children to shine!  We really believe that all children deserve a chance to feel special so will work hard to try to give every child in School a chance to sit at the table at some point. The table system is being run by our P5 children as a ‘young leaders’  task. Promoting leadership at all levels and allowing our children to help in the running of our School is also something that we are committed to. We are sure you’ll agree that this week’s diners look particularly refined! Well done to all children who were chosen this week!

Our fun filled week in P3

This week in P3 we started our book focus of books written by Julia Donaldson. We read a bit of Room on the Broom and then we all had the opportunity to work in groups to create our own endings through drama – we really enjoyed showing these to the rest of the class!!

In literacy we continued to look at information posters through the theme of Remembrance Day. We learnt a lot about Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies and shared our posters with each other about what we had learned.

In numeracy we have been looking at numbers 10 or 100 more and less than within 1000. We all got quite competitive during our game of bingo and loved challenging ourselves in our mild, spicy, hot activity!

This week we also continued our yoga… this time it was to star wars and the force was definitely with us!

Have a lovely weekend from us all in P3 🙂

Remembrance Day Assembly

Remembrance Day

What a BUSY week!

Celebrating Achievement

Mrs McCartney was so proud of us today as we presented our class assembly to infants, upper school and to parents/carers. We explored the reasons why we wear poppies and what the word conflict means. We then focused on strategies to help us resolve conflict in our daily lives- we really hope that this helped!
Mrs McCartney is going to appoint ‘Peer Mediators’ in our class to help resolve conflict .Many thanks for coming along today and sharing our learning!

Resolving Conflict

We have been exploring conflict resolution in class. We are learning that when we get into arguments with people, the problem won’t be sorted until both parties feel that they have been treated fairly. First we have to try to understand – by putting ourselves in the other person’s shoes. Each person must be allowed to say how they feel – without being interrupted. In order for it to work: each person must listen carefully to what the other has to say.

Book Focus
We are really enjoying exploring the text, ‘The Amazing Story of Aldolphus Tips.’ We will be doing lots of fun activities linked across the curriculum related to this novel. It is bringing all the knowledge that we have gained about World War 2 to life and helping us to realise what life was like during that time.
Shoe Box Appeal
The Shoe Box Appeal was a massive success. Primary 5 really enjoyed the full experience. Mrs McCartney said we were like Santa’s little helpers filling the shoe boxes last Friday. They have now been collected and are going to give many people in the world a memorable Christmas!!!
Well done, Primary 5! Thank you so, so much to EVERYONE who donated a shoe box- we really appreciate your support.
St Michael’s Christmas Hamper Appeal
We are overwhelmed already by the amount of food that has arrived in school for the Christmas Hamper Appeal- thank you so much!! The children are creating a display of the food outside both Primary 5’s classes.
Things to remember:
*St Michael’s Christmas Hamper Appeal in by Friday 25th November please
*Focusing on the poem ‘Flander’s Field’ for our reading homework this week- looking forward to hearing the children’s personal responses to the poem!

Happy weekend!

A time to remember: P5B

It has been a week of remembrance in P5B. We have taken the time this week to remember the soldiers that had fought and lost their life in the war. To help us understand more about what it was like to have lost someone during the war, Mr Robison (Ben’s dad), took the time to come along talk to the Primary 5s about world war 1 and world war 2, he shared his stories about his granddad (Ben’s great granddad), who they sadly lost in the first world war. Mr Robison shared photographs and medals to show the Primary 5s how fallen soldiers are honoured and remembered. Thank you very much Mr Robison , you left the primary 5s with a lot  of thought and appreciation for what goes on during the war.

We have also been very busy writing thank you letters to all the guests  that came along and shared their stories about war and the part that they had during the wars. We learnt the difference of a formal and informal letter, and the importance of  having good grammar, punctuation and vocabulary when writing letters.

We got very creative this week, making our own poppies for remembrance day,  on Friday the 11th November. We really enjoyed getting creative and making something that represents something so important to us.

dscn05511 dscn05521

We are continuing with number talks in Math, this week our number talk focus was on addition. We are becoming more confident with number talks!

dscn05501

The Primary 5s have been apart of quality dinning during lunch. Quality dinning gives us the opportunity to develop our communication skills. This week we had quality dinning with Primary4s, Primary 6 and Primary 7.

A news letter has gone that Primary 5 are collecting non perishable foods for St Michael Day care centre. We are collecting food to make Christmas hampers. Please support us!

Have a great weekend!

P4B Blog WB 7.11.16

Dear All

We had another good day at the rugby on Wednesday despite the weather. Can you ask your child to bring in a change of trousers, socks and shoes? The shoes can be indoor shoes. Children need a waterproof jacket with a hood and gloves. They should wear their school tops and joggers. They need a small snack and drink and a packet of hankies would be useful. Thank you to Mrs Finch and Kyle from the rugby club for helping us to walk along

In maths we’ve been learning digital and analogue clocks. We measured our stinky mustard plants and smelled them. We recorded all the information we collected.

In literacy we made our own version of the Hamish McHaggis story. We made our own characters and settings. We learned different types of verbs to make our writing more exciting e.g. speaking verbs, movement verbs and we learned opposite verbs.

In health and wellbeing, we did rhythmic gymnastics and we learned to dance the dashing white sergeant in social dancing.

In learning across the curriculum we researched birds on the internet and made bird fact files.

Have a good weekend!

Flumflum trees, singing and fun in P1A!

This week we have been learning the sounds ‘g’ and ‘l’. We have been practising how to write our sounds and we have been making words.

so-l-sound et-and-sb-l-sound

Nico and Zara said that they enjoyed rainbow writing and making the sounds with playdough.

In numeracy, we have been learning all the different ways to make 2, 3, 4 and 5.

ec-adding-to-5 em-adding-to-5

We even made our own sums! Thomas says that 2+1=3 and Euan wants to let you know that 2+2=4. Jacob’s favourite activity was our dice game!

On Thursday, we read Jack and the Flumflum Tree by Julia Donaldson. We looked at the front cover and used our imaginations to think about what the Isle Of Blowyernose might look like. Look at our fantastic pictures!

jatfft-1 jatfft-2 jatfft-3

We have working really hard with learning our songs for our nativity, ‘The Innkeeper’s Breakfast’. Campbell’s favourite nativity song is ‘Oh, what a lovely breakfast!’

On Friday, we got five minute’s extra play time for our excellent behaviour when walking around the school. Miss Harrison was very proud of us!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend,

P1A 🙂
