Family Learning Afternoon

Thank you to all of our family and friends who came along to our Family Learning afternoon last Thursday. The focus for this session was on how we teach reading at Springfield Primary and Bonnytoun Nursery. After learning about the methods staff use to teach children to read as well as the ‘reading’ ethos being created at Springfield, there was a chance to view the learning in classrooms. Parents, carers and wider family members enjoyed joining in on a variety of reading lessons using different texts. All staff are passionate about books and reading at Springfield and we will continue to instill this in your children.

Fizzy Fingers!

We are very proud to show you pictures of our Fizzy Fingers group who work with Mrs Manlove once a week to develop their fine motor skills. What superstars they are! Thank you so much to Mrs Manlove for the effort and care that she puts into facilitating and supporting this group. What happy children they are!

P7 RBS Moneysense

Both P7 classes were very fortunate this week to have a Moneysense workshop brought to us by RBS. 6 RBS volunteers (some of whom were parents of children in our school) very kindly helped Mr Logan and Mrs Gordon deliver the workshop.

The children had to consider mobile phone characteristics and order them in terms of importance. In groups they then had to match a customer with a phone contract based on their needs. Each group presented the phone contract that best suited their customer with the reasons why.

Everyone was very engaged with the topic, and we hope it helps them to better understand the process we go through when thinking of purchasing something new. At a minimum they may now better appreciate their lovely parents and carers, who in most cases were the source of funding for their own mobile phones…

P5 Fantastic Fundraisers…

Some of our lovely P5 children have been busy raising funds for the charity Callum’s Cabin. Callum’s Cabin provides much needed holiday ‘cabins’ for children suffering from cancer and their families to enjoy.  Well done to Beinn, Gabriella and Andrew from P5B and Mack from P5A for their hard work. We are proud of the kindness that these children have shown. Well done also to Samuel Burgess in P1B for winning the fundraising competition that the children set.

P2’s Victorian Assembly

Thank you so much to Mrs Burton and all of her lovely P2 children for their excellent assembly last Friday.  The children looked wonderful in their Victorian costumes as they told all about a typical Victorian childhood, including some of the games that children would have played long ago. Well done everyone!

P7a

This week in PE we played handball. Mrs Gordon was on a handball course a few weeks ago so was keen to try out some of the warm up games she had learnt. Next steps are to look at our technique and tactics.

For World Book Day we finished our latest class novel – Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden. The children then went on to discuss the cliff-hanger ending whilst predicting what they think would happen in a sequel. Thanks to the parents who popped in to see us.

Did someone say multiplication?

If you thought you knew all you needed to know about multiplication, think again. This week we have learnt five different multiplication strategies. We are enjoying learning about the different strategies as we are able to use them confidently in our number talk discussions. This week we looked at partitioning, distributive strategy, near tens and halving and doubling. We are now able to decided which strategy would be the most effective to use. We really enjoying our number talk discussions, it gives us the opportunity to share and talk about our strategies.

This weeks spelling pattern were words ending in -ed. Did you know there are five different spelling rules for words ending in-ed? We practised our note taking skills, we watched a video clip that taught us the different rules, we worked with a partner and made our own summarised notes on the white boards. We then had the task of adding -ed to some words and using the spelling rules we made sure we spelt the words correctly and that they were placed under the correct rule. We found this tricky at times, but working with a partner helped as we were able to work through the rules, use prior knowledge and brainstorm together.

In Literacy this week, we continued to practise using the inverted comma correctly. We had to rewrite speech bubbles, from a comic strip, into direct speech. we needed to make sure that we used the inverted commas, and that we used the correction punctuation in our sentences. We then created our own comic strip with speech bubbles and asked a partner to rewrite the speech bubbles into direct speech. This  was great fun, we have some very creative and talented children in P5B

In PE this week, we had to work together as a team. We needed to make sure that we worked together. In our groups we formed a circle and held hands. We needed to make sure that we didn’t break the circle. Mrs Matos added a hula hoop to our circle and we needed to get the hula hoop around the circle as many times as possible without letting go of each others hands. If that wasn’t tricky enough Mrs Matos kept adding  more hula hoops to our circle. We really needed to talk to each other and keep each other motivated. It was  great fun, and we all had a good laugh with this task.

Lastly a massive well done to Beinn, Gabriella, Andrew and Mack. These four children have a heart of gold. A young family member of Beinn’s passed away from cancer, this year marked his 10th anniversary, to keep his memory alive his parents run a place where people with cancer can go and relax as a family, get some time ‘away’ from it all, this special place is called Callum’s Cabin. The above children took it upon themselves to raise some money for Callum’s Cabin. They ran a competition and asked the boys and girls in school to guess how many cabins there were. They had proudly raised over £30..Well done!! Mrs Matos is very proud of you all!

Pupil Council Committee

Meet the Pupil Council Committee photographed below.

Lucy Roy is our Chair, ably assisted by Julia Calabrese as Vice.

We were very busy planning our first fundraiser for the school…Red Nose Day on March 24th. More to come very soon…

WB 6.3.17

This week in Literacy we have been very busy learning our new digraphs. We had lots of different activities set out to help us practise our sounds and common words. Here are some of the activities we were doing:

  • We made pasta words
  • We used sound cubes to build words
  • played digraph board games
  • used number fans to identify the number of sounds in a word
  • bottle top common words – pick one and read it.
  • throw a bean bag onto your common word and spell it out
  • reading silly questions and deciding whether the answer is yes or no

and the best bit is………they are all things we can do at home too!

We also did a story study this week based on the book ‘Oi! Get off our train’. We worked around the different stations using some of our thinking reader skills.  The story is about a boy who takes endangered animals onto his train to save them and keep them safe. We compared it to Noah’s Ark as we thought there were many similarities. We wrote summaries, sequenced key events, visualised different parts of the story and picked out tricky vocabulary. As a little brain break, we decided to do a parade around the classroom pretending we were one of the animals from the story. Can you guess which animals we are?

We have started learning how to write instructions. We evaluated different examples and talked about when we would need/use instructions. We practised using bossy words (we are wagging our fingers to be bossy here!) and gave each other oral instructions.

In Maths we have continued our work on subtraction. We have been linking addition and subtraction through our learning on number fact families. We used rainbows to help us remember our number bonds and used these to help us write subtraction stories.

In topic we were looking at the history of cars. We thought the old cars looked very funny as they only had 3 wheels and they didn’t have a roof or any windows. In the class some of us became car mechanics and had to learn how to fill out forms and we also designed our own number plates. We used cars to experiment with different tyre patterns and we enjoyed getting very messy!

We were so excited to get outside in the sunshine and do our ‘walk a mile’. It is a great way to have a little brain break and to keep ourselves fit and healthy. We have also enjoyed sharing our achievements out of school with some of the girls taking part in a gymnastics show. We are very proud of you, well done.

Wishing everyone a fabulous weekend.
