P2/3 Victorian Research.

The children were set a task to find out information about the Victorians, out and about where we live and places they had visited. Also, they were asked to bring in artefacts and be able to talk about them. Here are some of their findings and special things from the Victorian times-

We now have our own museum of information and artefacts.

Thank you for all of your wonderful efforts!

P2, P2/3 and P3’s Victorian Day- Part 2

We have had a wonderful couple of days being Victorians. On Thursday, the children dressed as Victorians and had a session at a Victorian School. Then they had ‘gruel’ for breakfast.

Some children wanted ‘MORE’!

The children had their daily march. They played some traditional games.

The children made kites. Freya is studiously measuring the string she needed. I was very impressed with her measuring skills.

The children were very busy with a tricky task.

Fortunately, it was a windy day to test the kites!

The P5s came to observe our kite making skills.

The children also made peg dolls. There were some interesting characters!

P2, P2/3 and P3’s Victorian Day

On Thursday P2, P2/3 and P3 had a Victorian Day in school and dressed up how Victorian children would have in the past. On the morning we practiced some Victorian handwriting and also carried out some times tables drills aloud. We also got the opportunity to try some ‘gruel’ …. yum!

In the afternoon we split into three groups and rotated around three different activities:

  • Making a kite
  • Making a peg doll
  • Taking part in Victorian games

We all really enjoyed our Victorian day and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for all of their help, including those who helped to make  costumes and the frames for the kites!

We are all looking forward to flying our kites at the weekend!

Have a lovely weekend from P2, P2/3 and P3 🙂

Numeracy and mathematics

Our focus in numeracy over the past few weeks has been fractions, decimals and percentages. We have been working hard to establish the link between these and apply our learning in different, real-life contexts. This week we were asked to prepare a timetable for the S1 pupils at Linlithgow Academy based on the information provided by Mr. Logan. For example; 20% of our timetable had to consist of English, 0.1 had to be for the teaching of P.E whilst 0.05 of the timetable was to be assigned to Spanish. We were successful in doing so, quickly realising that showing our working and reading the question carefully were also important. In West Lothian’s contest on Sumdog, we managed to place in the top 100 schools, with some pupils scoring highly on the individual leaderboard.

Literacy

We are coming to the end of our group novels for Guided Reading and will be saying goodbye to Alex Rider, Harry Potter and The Eejits (The Twits by Roald Dahl converted to Scots). This year, we have been accessing a variety of texts and sources of information and continue to enjoy exploring reading in different ways. During comprehension we looked at a shared text, analysing a newspaper article before identifying and discussing key features and characteristics of the text. For example, we found it interesting that Spider Man’s character was in fact inspired by a fly crawling up a wall, as opposed to a spider. He also has a real address in Forrest Hills, New York, unlike other superheroes. Having carried out our reading this week, we composed 5 higher order questions that we could challenge the peers in our reading group with. These were posted to Yammer, and we had fun logging on to tackle other people’s questions. Finally, we will all be submitting entries to the Young Writer of the Year Competition and having completed our plans and first drafts, we are now moving on to word process our final drafts. Everyone is creating a text of their choice, we have some short stories, poems, newspaper articles and even one or two comic strips. You can look forward to seeing the end products, I’m sure they will be fantastic.

IDL

Our learning theme of World War II continues to interest us, and we have been demonstrating our wealth of knowledge through the creation of a personal project. Each pupil chose an aspect of World War II as the focus for their study and has used the findings from research to begin putting together their final project. From aircraft and naval fleets, to the role of women, the use of propaganda, forms of communication and children during the war, we certainly have a wealth of subtopics covered. These personal projects will form the basis for a class talk which we will deliver during the final term of P7. I’m sure this won’t phase any of our confident individuals and effective contributors here in P7b. Watching The Great Escape has provided a welcome break from our personal projects and we are intrigued as to whether the prisoners-of-war will pull off the finest escape in military history from Stalag Luft III…

Parents’ Evenings

Thank you to those of you who attended our parents’ evenings earlier this week. Both the children and I greatly appreciate the huge role you play in the learning partnership here at Springfield Primary School. On a similar note, thank you to our House Captains and P7 Leaders who volunteered their own time to assist on both evenings. The other teachers, staff and parents were singing their praises and complimenting the mature and sensible manner in which they conducted themselves. I’m incredibly proud of them all.

Next Week

– No homework next week due to ongoing personal projects, these can be submitted to me on Friday 31st March or the first day back after Easter Holidays.
– Academy staff will be here at Springfield P.S to discuss transition and ensure this is a smooth step for all pupils.
– School football training on Monday, 3.30-4.30pm outside. Friendly match against Linlithgow Bridge Primary School on Monday 27th March, letters to be distributed next week to those playing.
– Red Nose Day next Friday 24th March, organised by Pupil Council Committee. ‘Mad Hair’ Dress Down Day, bring £1 along with a bake sale. Please send in any baking bagged and priced, and remember these are to contain NO NUTS. The children may bring money to purchase these on the day.

We hope you enjoyed reading our blog and have a great weekend.

P6B Class Talks

Well done to all of the children in P6B for your Class Talks on the Industrial Revolution – you all worked so hard!

Amazing P5A…

Hello!

Many thanks to all parents who came along for Parents’ Night- it was lovely to share how well your children are doing with you!

Lily and Nicci
Lily and Nicci were confident and responsible individuals when they went around the whole school collecting money for Sick Kids. They raised £32.10- amazing!
Well done girls- we are all very proud of you both!
Thank you to everyone who supported them.

Sharing Learning
Primary 5 visited P2, 3 and P2/3 to see how their ‘Victorian Day’ was going. Waw- they were all dressed up in Victorian clothes and were doing activities that children in those days would have done. They made dolls, kites and played Victorian games in the PE HALL. We all really enjoyed our visit- thank you very much for allowing us to come and share in your learning!

Science
In Science with Mrs Tulloch, we brought in our very own resources to make our own guitars. We used junior saws, wood, cardboard, rubber bands and wood.
We had to make 3 different pitches, it was a lot of fun!

Maths
We have been exploring multiplication strategies to help us calculate sums. We are giving every strategy a go and maintaining a growth mindset when we find sums tricky!
Mrs McCartney has definitely noticed our confidence growing, especially when we are managing to calculate extremely tricky sums.

Round Table Competition
This year’s theme is the Union Canal. Opened almost 200 years ago, it has been a central part of Linlithgow’s heritage, from the transport of goods in earlier times to becoming a haven for wildlife and leisure pursuits nowadays. Primary 5 were asked to take part in a writing competition: A story or a poem about the canal, e.g. how does the canal enrich our life? What do we love about the canal?
Our entries were fantastic!

Bridge Testing
We were delighted to showcase our bridges at Parents’ Night. We received lovely feedback about impressive they were!
We all tested our bridges this week- this was a lot of fun!
Lots of our bridges managed to hold 7 food tins!
Thank you to all who helped us make our bridges.

Things to remember:
Easter Bonnet for Wednesday 29th March- thank you!!

Many thanks for taking the time to read our blog.
We all hope that you have a fantastic weekend!

Primary 6a – Industrial Revolution

This week, Primary 6a have presented Class Talks to their peers. The talks were all based around the Industrial Revolution and varied in content.

They were presented in a variety of ways, including demonstrations, powerpoints and display boards.

The one thing that the class talks all had in common, was the quality of the information that had been researched.

This was of an exceptionally high standard and the children should be very proud of their achievements.

Well Done Primary 6a.

P4a top of school in the SumDog Contest :)

This week in Big Writing we were learning about the differences between facts and opinions. For example we think we are the best class in the whole school (which is our opinion) but we know we came top in our school out of all the classes that played in the SumDog contest (this is a fact). Next week we will use this knowledge to write a newspaper report on Ancient Egypt.

In Numeracy we continued to use formal methods (we call them chimney sums) for adding and subtracting. We are now using hundreds, tens and units. Next week Mrs Newton has said she is going to give us even harder challenges to solve.

We learned about Tutankhamun. We took turns playing Howard Carter and asked him questions about his amazing discovery. We used different sources to learn about the discovery and why it is important that we keep this information. Next week we will be taking part in an Ancient Egypt’s Got Talent Show- all about the GODS!!!

Most of our parents came to see Mrs Newton- we think they liked what they heard 🙂

Breaking News- We will be going to the National Museum in Edinburgh on the 12th June for a visit, taking part in the Mummy workshop and visiting their new tomb. All the details will be sent home at the start of May (we will need 2 parent helpers per class).

Have great weekend- 2 weeks to go!

P4B boys and their ‘Box of Feelings…’

Some of our lovely P4 boys came to show me their ‘Box of Feelings’ that had made today. The boys decided to make this in class as a healthy way to ‘post’ their unwanted feelings. The boys plan to use it when they are feeling sad or angry to help them to feel better again. What a great idea boys! You are all little superstars!
