Scottish Parliament Trip

We had an interesting and informative morning at the Scottish Parliament today.

The children explored the Parliament Building, including the Debating Chamber, questioned an MSP and were able to discover more about the history of the Parliament through the exhibition that was on show.

An enjoyable day overall.

We had a mention on the Scottish Parliament Twitter feed too.

Blog Week Ending 17.3.17

Dear all

Last week we moved seats to tables of four. There had to be two girls and two boys at each table.

In literacy we learned about newspaper articles.

In numeracy we calculated adding and subtraction number pyramids.

In Health and Wellbeing we were doing relay races.

In Learning across the curriculum we designed an Egyptian game or a pyramid or mummy.

With Mrs Begarnie, in science we learned that we shouldn’t waste water and made posters or wrote letters.

Hope you had a good weekend!

P7a weekly news

P7a have been very busy this week. We started the research on our personal projects during our ICT slot this week. Our projects will be based on an aspect of World War II that we are interested in finding out more about.

In numeracy we were finishing off our learning on fractions, decimals and percentages with an assessment of the full topic. From this we could all see our areas that need more work and we will work on some of those next week.

In French we learnt how to count to 100, and how to write out the french words for the numbers. In Spanish we played happy families and learnt how to ask for a card using some new language and some of the family vocabulary we had previously learnt, eg tienes la madre roja?, si lo tengo, gracias.

In PE with Mrs Gordon we continued our handball learning by giving feedback whilst we watched other teams on their skills and strategies. By picking one player to mark, we improved our technique.

Our class had 3 award winners in the Scottish Maths Challenge. Well done to Oliver with Gold, James C with Silver and Ruby with Bronze. A fabulous effort.

P1B – Dogs don’t do ballet, or do they?

Hello from P1B, it has been lovely to see all the parents at parents night this week and talk about all the progress the children are making.

Last week we did a mini topic on the book Dogs Don’t Do Ballet.

Image result for dogs don't do ballet

This is a funny story about Biff the dog who fulfills his dreams of becoming a ballet dancer despite continually being told Dogs don’t do Ballet.  Using the Thinking Reader approach we looked at many different aspects of the book.  We drew pictures and wrote about Biff’s feelings when he was sad and happy, made cards and wrote him messages to cheer him up, sequenced the story, designed front covers for our own books, looked at jobs that real dogs do and looked closely at the vocabulary – identifying and discussing interesting and unusual words.  We made a huge list – 48 words!

Hayley and Lauren read their messages to Biff.

Tess the teddy wrote us another letter, asking us to learn about a different form of transport – boats this time!  She left us a book called Peter the Cruise Ship.  We worked in groups to draw and write about the different kinds of boats we know.  We shared our knowledge of ferries, kayaks, canoes, submarines, sailing boats and many more.  We have also been learning about the history of boats – from hollowed out tree trunks to what the have today.  We will continue with our boat theme next week.

Last week we learned the sounds ‘igh’ and ‘-y’.  They are tricky sounds to hear and use in words but we worked hard and practised in lots of different ways.

This week there were no new sounds but we took the time to use the digraphs we’ve been learning recently and to consolidate our tricky words.

We have also been enjoying the (slightly) better weather and thinking about Spring.  We had fun playing outside and have been trying some new art techniques as we make some pictures to go on display in the school corridor.  I’ll upload photos  of the finished pictures when they’re dry and mounted!

We have a school achievement wall in the corridor outside Miss Baillie and Mrs Malcolm’s offices.  We display achievements from within and outside school here.  Please encourage your child to let us know of any achievements outside of school.  Although it can be, it doesn’t have to be an accolade from an organised club – it could be learning to ride their bike or baking a cake, anything they are really proud of.  Last week Imogen and Daisy took part in a gymnastics display and brought their medals in to show us and Ruaridh and Cohen both received trophies from their enjoy-a-ball classes.

Well done guys!

Happy weekend, from P1B and Mrs Kennedy

P5 Fundraising Girls…

Some P5 children have been busy fundraising again over the past two weeks. Well done to Nicci Mathewson and Lily-Rose Graham in P5A for raising over ÂŁ30 for The Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh! The girls did a ‘Guess the Bunny’s Birthday’ competition and Katherine in P6B was the proud winner!  We are so proud of you girls!

Scottish Maths Challenge Award Winners!

We are very proud to announce that some of our P6 and P7 children have won an award in the Scottish Maths Challenge run by Edinburgh University! Well done to Ruby Cardie in P7A for winning a Bronze award, Alex Black in P6A and James Calder in P7A for gaining a Silver award and Oliver Thompson in P7A for receiving a Gold award. The Maths Challenge is run by Edinburgh University and is know to be particularly difficult, in order to really extend children’s mathematical thinking. We are proud of all of our children who took part and especially our award winners. Well done to you all!  A huge thanks to Mrs Tulloch for her work with children in Numeracy and Maths and for her on-going help with these awards.

Assembly-Pupil Voice Committees

As you may be aware our Pupil Voice Committees are now in full swing! Today for the first time, representatives from each committee shared their work with the rest of the School at Assembly. Our Committees allow children to lead improvements across all areas of our School and wider community. At the moment we have 6 Committees led by our children. These are: 1) Eco Committee 2) Pupil Council 3) Road Safety Committee 4) Rights, Respecting Schools Committee 5) Outdoor Learning Committee and 6) Library Committee. Please keep an eye on our Pupil Voice/ Committees board in our foyer for up-to-date information on the work of our Committees.  Thanks also to all staff who support the Committees. Great effort everyone!

What time is it, P1A?

Over the last two weeks, we have been learning to read analogue and digital o’clock times. We have been linking our daily routines to o’clock times and we know that we go for lunch at 12 o’clock!

We have also started to look at subtraction to 10 and have been learning to use different strategies to subtract. Our activities Subtraction Bowling and Subtraction Smash have been very popular! We were excited to use our new subtraction workbooks and we have been working very hard to subtract from numbers to 10.

Last week, we learned two new sounds, ‘igh’ and ‘-y’. We looked at how to form these sounds and we were able to write different words featuring these sounds on our whiteboards. Using our sounds to read, we were able to work out which words were nonsense words and which words were real words. We also used magnifying glasses to hunt for ‘igh’ and ‘-y’ words and used ‘igh’ light bulbs and initial sound light bulbs to make words.

This week we have been revising all of our common words. Did you know that we have learned 54 common words so far?! We have been looking for common words in our reading books, have been matching common words, making common words on our magnetic boards, playing common word games in the playground and using our common words to write sentences. No wonder we are tired!

Last week, Mr Fluff went on another adventure! This time he had been on a yacht so we decided to help him learn about water transport. We worked in groups to draw and write all of the types of transport that we knew that went on water and then we looked at a powerpoint on the smartboard to compare our results. We learned about the history of boats and looked at why we use different types of boats today.

Daniel made a fantastic kite at home and brought it in to class to show us!

We have been continuing to develop our movement skills such as throwing, catching, balancing and jumping and we have also enjoyed gym with our PE teacher, Mrs Reid.

Finally, we have a few achievements to share with our readers. Firstly, we won the peg challenge again today! Well done to Carla, Eva and Sophia who won medals at the Linlithgow Gymnastics Show. The girls said that they had to perform a gymnastics routine and practise lots! Well done to Kerr for winning a medal at Enjoy-a-Ball and for achieving his Grade 6 white/purple belt at Tae Kwon Do.

Thank you very much for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

P2/3 working with P4.

Mrs Newton’s class have been working with P2/3 on SUMDOG. They were very helpful teaching P2/3, the skills of logging onto the netbooks, the internet and finding SUMDOG. The P4s talked the children through the different areas of the Maths’ games.

Thank you P4!

P2/3’s Research for the 1960’s.

For their Homework, the P3 children found out about the 1960’s and brought in their research and artefacts. They confidently talked about their writing, pictures and artefacts.

Eilidh told us about her slide rule and her granny being a Flower Girl in the Linlithgow Gala Day.

Aleisha had talked with her Grandparents about their favourite music and children’s programmes when they were younger. We have enjoyed listening to the music, suggested by Aleisha, and watching some clips.

Dean talked about his Grandad’s school photo and his record, as well as other things he brought in.

Finlay had found out lots of interesting information, which he shared clearly with the other P3s.

Daniel brought in some interesting styles of knitting patterns from his Granny.

Mark had a great selection of Boy’s comics, which he shared with everyone.

Charlie had lots of pictures of his Grandad  and Granny looking very smart! So we were able to talk about some of the fashions of the time. He had also found out lots of facts and information that was super!

Layla brought in a treasure trove of items, including her Grandad’s very special medal. She was able to give excellent descriptions and stories about her items.

It was interesting and fascinating listening to all their information. Super effort, well done!
