Burgh Beautiful Assembly!

Avril and Margaret from Burgh Beautiful joined us for assembly today and gave an informative presentation on the fabulous work that they do to keep the town looking attractive.  Children from some classes also shared the work that they have been doing in Outdoor Science to learn about nature and how to take care of it. Thank you to Burgh Beautiful for coming along today and we hope to get involved with some of your campaigns to keep our lovely town in bloom!

Family Learning: Numeracy and Maths

Thank you to all parents and carers who attended our Family Learning session on Numeracy and Maths last Monday afternoon. Mrs Matos and Mrs Gordon delivered an excellent presentation on ‘Number Talks’ which is an approach to supporting children’s understanding of number that we are currently using across school. Parents and carers also had a chance to see Numeracy and Maths teaching in classrooms. We hope that you all enjoyed the experience and learned some more about our Curriculum and learning and teaching strategies.

P1B – Trips

What a quick week in primary 1.  Both our trips went very well.  The children seem to have really enjoyed them and have learned a lot – lots of chat and play related to our trips back in the classroom.  The children were very well behaved outside of school and I’m really proud of them.

There was great excitement when we set off in the bus for Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway on Tuesday, some of the children said the bus ride was the best bit!  We had a super journey on the steam train, eating our lunch in the old fashioned coaches and making sure we had our tickets ready to be punched by the ticket inspector.  We got off the train to watch the steam engine change sides to pull us back again.  In the museum, our lovely guide, Mina, let us go into lots of trains and told us information about them.  Our favourites were the Royal Mail train and the Glasgow underground train.

On Wednesday we were off out again – to the Loch this time.  We were met by two National Trust Rangers who played games with us to teach us about bird migration.  The games were good fun – it was really hard to reach South Africa without any mishaps on the way!  We eventually all made it though.  Lots of worms came up to see us as we were trampling on the ground, the Rangers let us hold them and told us all about how good the worms are for the soil and the part they play in helping things to grow.  We all enjoyed learning outside and we are very lucky that we have such lovely outdoor spaces near to the school.

Around our trips we have been learning the ‘oi’ sound, we are continuing with subtraction and have been looking at size and measure.  We have also been writing reports, we wrote one about our Spring walk last week and another about our trip to Bo’ness this week.

Have a lovely long weekend everyone.

Numeracy and Mathematics

This week P7b have been started their work on Information Handling. We have been gathering, interpreting and displaying data in a variety of ways. Firstly, we created and carried out surveys based on a question of our choice before using Microsoft Word and Excel to present our results in the form of vertical bar charts. We then analysed each other’s bar charts and discussed the trends from our results. Additionally, we have been consolidating our previous learning of tally charts and frequency tables as a method of gathering data. Next week, we will continue our work on Information Handling when using pie charts and both straight and curved line graphs.

Literacy and English

Having finished reading our previous group novels, we have now moved on to study our final text for Guided Reading this year. The Red group will be reading Artemis Fowl, the Blue group will be reading Tiger and the Green and Yellow groups will be studying texts written in Scot’s. Our main focus this week for reading and comprehension was tackling cloze procedure passages where we were asked to fill in the gaps in passages both with and without the help of a word bank. Where there was no word bank provided, we had to carefully select the most appropriate word to ensure the sentence makes sense. For writing, we have been ensuring our work is detailed and accurate through our ability to up-level and proof read. When looking back at our writing, we identified examples of where we could use more ambitious examples of VCOP and implemented strategies to correct our spelling and punctuation. Our class talks will be based on our personal project theme and we must be prepared to deliver these the week beginning Monday 15th May. Mr. Logan is looking forward to hearing us present.

Health and Wellbeing

After our final session of basketball for P.E, which involved small-sided games and a tournament, we are ready to move onto our final block of P.E for P7. This will be outdoors to further develop our skills in athletics. Alongside P.E in school, we have also been lucky enough to participate in both golf and rugby sessions this week. A group of pupils from P7b travelled to Kingsfield Golf Range on Tuesday afternoon, courtesy of the Stephen Gallacher Foundation, to begin a 4 week programme designed to get young people playing golf. Mr. Logan accompanied us to the session where we used irons and were introduced to the ‘GASP’ routine (Grip, Aim, Stance, Posture). Those who stayed at school took part in the first of our rugby taster sessions delivered by volunteers from Linlithgow Rugby Club. Our pupils are incredibly lucky to be given these sporting opportunities and were a credit to Springfield Primary School throughout.

Sciences

Finally, Mrs. Tulloch and P7b have been working tirelessly over recent weeks to prepare moving buggies as part of our STEM project. The winners were announced today and we say a huge well done to Niamh and Cameron who were awarded First Prize. This was seen as a welcome birthday present for Niamh who turned 12 today! Third Prize also went to two members of P7b, Eve and Ross. Well done to all of our pupils for their hard work and perseverance throughout the project and thank you to Mrs. Tulloch. It wouldn’t have been possible without her!

Next week:

  • Monday – HOLIDAY
  • Tuesday – Golf @ Kingsfield 1-2pm, rugby taster session 2.45 – 3.15pm
  • Thursday – HOLIDAY
  • Friday – Russell’s assembly, dress down day for the Galaday (£1 per pupil)
  • No leavers hoodies to be worn until June
  • Personal Project feedback

Have a restful long weekend.

Growth Mindset Assembly

Thank you to Mr Logan and P7B for reminding us of the importance of having a Growth Mindset, at assembly last Friday. We should always keep on trying to be the very best that we can be and persevere in the face of challenges that come our way. We will continue to promote the ‘Growth Mindset’ ethos at Springfield, since it is proven to have a beneficial impact on learning.

Weekly news P7a

It was lovely to catch up with everyone and chat about our Easter holidays. The children settled in quickly and we discussed the busy last term that lay ahead.

In numeracy we did a self assessment and a second level assessment to allow us to see what areas we still needed to work on. This will help Mrs Gordon plan for this term.

In literacy we wrote Easter holiday diary entries focusing on making our writing more engaging for the reader.

We learnt about WWII in French by using “true/false” “vrai/faux” sentences about Axis and Ally leaders. The children also had to translate sentences into English, and surprised themselves that by using prior knowledge, context and familiar words they could do this.

On Thursday afternoon Louisa Burgess and Hector Woodhouse came to judge the buggies the children had designed and made as part of their technologies/STEM focus last term. We had a few last minute hiccups as the children had to make alterations to some of the buggies. Here are a few photos of some of the groups.

A huge thank you to Mrs Tulloch who was responsible for all the teaching and learning behind this project. It really is a fabulous opportunity for the children to learn all these techniques within primary school. It also taught a valuable lesson in growth mindset, as the children had to keep focused and fix issues when they came up.

Welcome Back P1B

It was lovely to be back together again on Tuesday, all the children seem to have grown and have healthy glows from spending time outside during the holidays.  A lot of the first morning was spent discussing what we were up to during the holidays then we wrote all about them.  Some were very long and detailed as the children continue to make very good progress with their writing.

We finished off our transport topic with one final lesson. Tess wrote us another letter and she left us a book about space travel.  We looked at transport in the past, present and future.  We especially enjoyed looking at how we might travel in the future, particularly seeing the ‘Bloodhound’ – a supersonic car, maglev trains, driver-less cars and rockets to allow us to travel into space as tourists.  We designed our own methods of transport for the future, combining features from lots of different types of transport.  Lily’s car can drive on rainbows, Isla Vereker’s car doesn’t need fuel, it uses a big battery that never runs out because it’s massive 🙂  All the vehicles were very good and they will be on display outside the classroom along with notes about the specific features of each one.

On Thursday we went outside on a Spring nature hunt.  We had a checklist of things that we might see in Spring and worked with a partner, looking at how our school grounds are changing at this time of year.

Harrison brought in a certificate he received from a Swim program he did during the Easter holidays.  His swimming teacher was very impressed with his breaststroke and how well he listened to instructions – well done Harrison!

We are looking forward to our busy week next week with two trips!  Lets hope the weather is kind to us.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.
