Little Linlithgow arrives in P1/2

This week we have been busy setting up our new role play area. This term we are learning about our local area. We read the book ‘The Chimpanzees of Happytown’ and started to think about what a town needs for the people that live in it. We talked about the different modes of transport and different facilities. We then had a vote on what we would like to have in our own little Linlithgow. We have made our reading corner into Linlithgow Palace and created a Union Canal going through our classroom. We worked hard to create a doctors surgery in our role play corner.

In the story the chimpanzees are all sad because their town is called ‘Drabsville’ and it is a very glum place. Chutney the Chimp made lots of changes for the community and turned it into Happytown. In P1/2 we designed our own ‘dream’ towns. Some towns had chocolate roads, beds for cars, space hoppers, magical fairy houses. We used our imagination and enjoyed sharing our ideas with each other. Last week we had a visit from ‘Burgh Beautiful’ and we thought about how they try to make our town beautiful and happy. We designed posters to remind people to pick up their litter and to help keep our local area clean and pretty.

In Maths we have been telling the time. We have looked at o’clock and half past times and linked these times to our daily routines. We have also converted times from analogue to digital. Some children have been consolidating their understanding of multiplication. They used the Numicon to set out multiplication sums. We have revised a lot of our number fact families to help us link addition and subtraction.

We have some new members of the class – our caterpillars! They have grown so much since we got them and we have enjoyed watching them wriggle about in their pot. We are looking after them well so hopefully they will turn into beautiful butterflies soon.

We have been practising our digraphs this week by reading alien words. Miss Mudd made up some crazy words to check we could sound out and blend our sounds together. We have used our digraphs in sentences.

Paddington left us some new challenges in our challenge area this week. He wants to get healthy so we are helping him learn about our bodies. We had to use tape measures to measure different parts of our bodies. Liam even has a bigger head than Miss Mudd! He also set us a ‘balance challenge’ where we had to hold a balance and use a stopwatch to time how long we could do it. We have used pedometers to count our steps and see how active we are. We have been printing with skeletons and trying to name some of our body parts.

Daniel G used his choose time to make a thermometer for our surgery. He thought about hot and cold colours and used these in his model.

Wishing you all a very lovely weekend.

Farewell Mrs Malcolm and Thank you!

We said a sad farewell to Mrs Malcolm, our acting HT today, after helping to lead us for the past eight months.  We are pleased that Mrs Malcolm can now go and enjoy her well deserved retirement but we will all really miss working with her around school. Thank you so much Mrs Malcolm for all that you have done!  We have all loved working with you!

Next week we have the pleasure of welcoming out new HT, Mr Wells, into our school.  We are so much looking forward  to working with him and taking the next step on our ‘learning journey’  at Springfield and Bonnytoun…

Caterpillars and Capital Letters in P1B

Hello, this week we have been watching closely as our caterpillars grow, right before our eyes it seems! They are very active and are certainly getting very big, I won’t be surprised if they are in their cocoons when we return on Monday.

We have been looking at capital letters this week, learning to recognise and write capital letters and when to use them.  We had a lot of fun as we explored their different shapes, we have been painting, drawing in sand,  writing capital letter graffiti, playing snap and pairs, magnetic letters, driving cars around capital letter race tracks, using lego bricks and pegs as we match the capital letter to the lowercase letter,  and lots more.

We have also been looking at different genres of writing, trying instructions and persuasive writing this week.  We wrote instructions on how to wash your hands and we made anti-litters posters for a competition run by Burgh Beautiful.  This tied in well with our Local Community focus as we discussed all the nice places in Linlithgow and what happens when people leave litter. The winning entries will be displayed on the High Street. The children really thought about their designs and followed the instructions to keep them simple and bright with a clear message.  These are just a very small sample (due to photo no. restrictions) but they were all very good 🙂

In maths, we have been using subtraction to work out ‘how many more?’ when comparing amounts.  At the end of the week we did some weighing, using balance scales. We weighed objects around the classroom, including Noah’s shoe, and counted to see how many cubes it would take to balance the scales.  The shoe took 75 cubes!  We have also been looking at kitchen scales, practising how to weigh by reading the dial and seeing how many grams they weigh.  We were so busy I forgot to take any pictures, sorry.

Tess, our traveling ted has visited Imogen and Lauren’s houses this week, she had had a great time, however, we have discovered that she snores!  The girls did a super job of telling us what she has been up to.

We are continuing to look after the tubs outside, making sure they get lots of water in this warm weather.

We have also been busy with our assembly preparations, continuing to make props and practise our words and songs.  We’re all really looking forward to seeing you next Friday.  Have a good weekend.

Capital letters, weighing and police stations! (P1A)

This week we have been learning to identify, say and write capital letters. We also looked at when we need to use a capital letter. Some of our learning activities included painting capital letters, tracing capital letters, rainbow writing, writing capital letters on our whiteboards, playing games on the smartboard and computer and matching uppercase and lowercase letters with the magnetic boards.

For writing this week, we looked at writing instructions. We made our own instructions for washing our hands. We were able to use short sentences in our instructions and organise and order our ideas.

In numeracy and maths this week, we were learning subtraction facts to 10 and finding ‘how many more’ by subtracting. We also continued to link our addition and subtraction facts. On Thursday, we were learning to compare and describe weights. We sorted objects depending on whether they were heavy or light and compared them according to their weight. We also used cubes to weigh different objects. Ruaridh’s shoe weighed 71 cubes!

This week we started our new learning focus ‘Our Local Community’. We listened to a story called ‘The Chimpanzees of Happy Town’ and discussed features of a town. We had lots of super ideas such as doctors, schools, parks, vets, police/fire stations, houses, hotels, churches, paths and roads, banks, universities, cafes, shops, cinemas and swimming pools! ‘People Who Help Us’ will be part of our local study so we decided to turn our transport museum into a police station! It has already been very popular and we have enjoyed taking on different roles! As part of our new learning focus, Mr Fluff has been leaving school to go on some adventures. This week he has had lots of fun with Chloe and Abhinav. We will all get a turn to take Mr Fluff home with us over the next few weeks.

Thank you very much for reading our blog post. We hope that you all have a lovely weekend.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

Goodbye…

Hello!
Another quick week with lots packed in!

Assembly
Our assembly for Mrs Malcolm was lovely. Ruairidh and Millie from our class presented Mrs Malcolm with a card and lovely words about the positive impact that she has had at Springfield. We will all miss her and wish her all the very best in her retirement.
The Provost of the Marches came to our assembly to talk to us about the significance of their role in the Marches. It was very interesting and Joseph Burgess out the hat on that the Provost would wear on Marches Day.

Languages Ambassadors
The newly appointed Languages Ambassadors created a Powerpoint presentation to deliver to the upper school in assembly about what they are going to achieve this term. Welll done to Sophie, Grace and Zara who were clear and confident when speaking to P5-7 children!
We are all looking forward to them teaching us French and Spanish words this term.

Futsal and Quidditch
Our Futsal and Quidditch lessons are lots of fun! We managed to play Futsal with real goals on Wednesday and we played Quidditch with real brooms like Harry Potter on Tuesday! We are recognising the importance of team work.

Maths
We were comparing and ordering fractions at the beginning of the week. Lots of us managed to calculate the answer but found explaining why the fractions were in that order trickier.
Mrs McCartney said that we worked really well in pairs to come up with the right answers.

We are now learning about decimals and managed to convert fractions to decimals on Thursday. Lot of us recognise the link between fractions and decimals, even the link with percentages!

Literacy
We discussed a time in our life when we have been proud. We had to think about what it was that made us proud? Did we do something important or different? Had we achieved a target that you never thought you would?
We linked this to the fact that Olympians must be very proud to be taking part for their country. We had to imagine that we had been selected as a Torchbearer who will carry the torch. We had to re-tell the story of the big day. Our Story Writing piece is structured into the following sections:
1. Anticipation – setting the scene and getting ready.
2. The Flame approaches – the Torchbearer has their moment to shine in the Torch Relay.
3. After the event – talking to the press, friends and family.
We wrote the beginning of our story on Thursday, we are going to write the middle on Monday.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read our blog!

Have a fantastic weekend and we look forward to Mr Wells joining our school on Monday!
P5A and Mrs McCartney

Goodbye Mrs Malcolm :(

Lots happening in P4 this week. On Monday we learned about 3rd person pronouns- we will use this in our recounts next week. In numeracy we revisited time,  we learned about periods of time, converted analogue times to digital and had a time challenge as well.

In French we are learning about families and animals and we are going to learn “Le vieux Macdonald avait une ferme” next week.

In PE we are continuing to learn different athletic sports, this week it was hurdles. In Quidditch the broomsticks arrived- we enjoyed using them and hope that soon we will also have bludgers.

On Thursday we were all super excited because Joanne’s mum brought in two lambs for us to see. We were so quiet that they came right up to us. Joanne and Mrs Newton gave the lambs bottles- they were very hungry and very strong!

Today we all said goodbye to Mrs Malcolm 🙁  We have enjoyed having Mrs Malcolm as our head teacher and will miss her. We are looking forward to Mr Wells starting as none of us have had a head master before in this school.

Lots more happening next week- including a visit from a tractor- eek! Fruity Friday will also start up again next Friday. 20p for a piece of fruit- yum

Have a great weekend,

P4a 🙂

Baby Lambs in P4B!

Blog 19.5.17

Dear all

This week we had a visit from some baby lambs! They licked our hands and tried to eat grass. We got to see them feed from a bottle of milk. They were so fast they nearly pulled Mrs Newton’s arm off!

In literacy we did a spelling test. We learned about agreement and third person pronouns. We did our reading and we wrote about our special visitors!

In numeracy we practised giving change with coins and reinforced with online games on Sumdog. We revised fractions on a number line.

In Health and Wellbeing we played fish, chips and peas with Mrs Reid in PE to learn speed and listening skills. We also played quidditch with Kieran and got to go on brooms! We did relay races with Mrs McAlpine

In Learning across the curriculum we are designing farms using animals and a farm house.  In music we learned a song called Farmyard Scramble. We started doing our CHEM tests.

With Mrs Begarnie, in RME we learned about the Jewish faith.  We learned about kosher foods and what Jewish people could and could not eat together.

Have a good weekend!

P7b Blog

Numeracy and Mathematics

How much does a polar bear weigh? Enough to break the ice. Hello and welcome to this week’s P7b Blog. As you may have guessed, our focus this week has been weight. We have been using different scales to measure various objects and successfully converted between grams and kilograms, applying our previous knowledge that there are 1000g for every 1kg. Alongside this, we have been tackling weight word problems where we have to unpick exactly what each question is asking us to do. We also discussed the difference between imperial and metric systems of measure, and real-life examples of these being used. Following on from our focus on weight we have started our work on volume and capacity. We are now able to convert between litres, centilitres and millilitres, and use a formula (v = l x b x h) to find the volume of different containers and 3D shapes.

Literacy and English

All week we have been presenting our class talks to our peers. We have delivered a summarised version of our personal projects which focused on a specific aspect of World War II. Mr. Logan has been blown away by the standard of presentations and the hard work which has gone into the preparation and delivery of them. We have demonstrated that we are confident individuals who can present with the appropriate use of voice, tone, clarity and pace. Each and every class talk was detailed and interesting, with ICT used to support our work and audience interaction throughout. We understand that delivering presentations is an important skill for learning, life and work and we will be given a number of opportunities to do so after making our transition to Linlithgow Academy.

Health and Wellbeing

This week we had a workshop on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking. It was delivered by Lyndsay from the Just Enough charity. The children learnt a great deal about both issues and were shocked by some of the statistics that were shared. They can now more confidently identify the signs that somebody may be being trafficked or held as a slave. Thank you to Lyndsay and the Just Enough team for this excellent learning opportunity.

Our football teams had their final training session on Monday ahead of the annual George Allan football tournament at Linlithgow Rose F.C’s ground this weekend. We looked specifically at our shape, set-plays and both attacking and defending in 1v1 and 2v1 situations. The boys and girls are very excited ahead of this Sunday and would appreciate any support from parents, carers, friends and family members on the day. The first group matches kick-off at 9am and will run until approximately 12 noon. Please get along and cheer us on. Go Springfield!

Next week:

  • Sunday – George Allan football tournament  – 8.30am @ Linlithgow Rose F.C
  • Monday – No after school football this week, resumes Monday 5th June
  • Monday – Drug Education workshop @ 9-11am
  • Tuesday – Final Kingsfield golf session @ 1-2pm
  • Thursday – PTA Disco @ 7.30 – 9pm, tickets available in school
  • Thursday – Deadline for any medication for school camp
  • Friday – Camp dormitory and activity groups to be shared
  • Friday – All book festival EE2 forms to be returned
  • Monday 29th May – Friday 2nd June: Dukeshouse Wood all week

Enjoy your weekend, 6 weeks to go!
